WHY DO SOME PEOPLE OBSESS OVER THE USE OF HIJAB/NIQAB BY FEMALE STUDENTS? IS IT ROOTED IN HATRED OR A LACK OF EXPOSURE?

In recent days, I've been deeply troubled by the ongoing incident at one of the Federal government Universities in the southwestern part of our country, FUNAAB Abeokuta to be precise. Muslim female students who choose to wear hijab/niqab have allegedly been banned from exercising their right to practice their religion and uphold its values, as enshrined in our constitution on campus. Regrettably, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In the past, hijab/niqab were deemed "indecent" and included in the list of inappropriate dressings on campus signposts. This begs the question: Why are some individuals so fixated on hijab?

Could it be because some individuals have limited exposure and haven't had the opportunity to witness how developed countries respect and allow individuals to practice their beliefs? Why must some students and parents resort to legal action before their children can dress in accordance with their faith in a government school? Why?

I've had the privilege of teaching a veiled sister in one of the African countries, where Muslims make up less than 2% of the population. This isn't an issue in many parts of the world. So, why is Nigeria different?

Recently, Science in Yoruba organized a quiz competition, and one of my sisters - Faatimah Luqman Adewumi participated, earning second place. In a video released to congratulate the winners, which included her, it was disheartening to witness the hateful comments and abuse hurled at her simply because she wore the niqab. What's the problem?

Just last week, in Ilorin, while assisting a sister at the immigration office as she waited to be photographed for her international passport, we were told that only one female staff member was available to capture photos for those wearing the niqab, and she was absent. We were advised to return the following day. We should tolerate one another as Nigerians.

I strongly call on the government to be proactive and also impose strict penalties on anyone, including civil servants, regardless of their rank, who infringes upon the rights of individuals. No citizen is superior to another.

It always becomes an issue when it seems against Muslims. That's the school policy, transfer if you can't comply. Sometimes I wonder how peace found its way into the definitions peddled across. Wahala ni every now and then, anyone speaks bayi, na stoning...

U are missing the point. There are thousands ways to dress without dressing naked. Am not advocating for any form of indecent mode of dressing . Neither I am a pervert and fornicator or Adulterer like you. No am not. The facts remains that the institution have it's standard rules and regulations regarding the mode of dressing on campus. Once they are off campus the students can decide to wear whatever . A student cannot come into an institution with his or her own rule that is against the rule of the school. Register with CRESCENT UNIVERSITY and used your regalia as you wish. Its foolish to expect a school that has been in existence before u were conceived to adjust their values to conform and accommodate your myopic values and reasonings

As regard what you can do..you can express yourself without sounding very stupid. We all know that an Average Muslim is a Jihadist and a Boko Haram terrorist. I don't expect u to be any better before.

They should wear it in a Muslim school, it won't be any problem.

If not they might be defacing the dressing of the school therein

You can advise the government to stop collecting taxes from Muslims who wears Hijab/Niqab so that they can use their money to send their children to Islamic school rather using them on the school where they will not be benefitted form.

Sending your child to islamic school instead of public school will solve all these grammar

A school is a school and you need to dress like a student and not some religious zealot. France just banned the wearing of abaya by Muslim women in public schools. Do you attribute that to lack of exposure too?

thank you very much...if we should be allowing religious sentiment in the areas of learning...then it would get to a time the child of an African Traditional Religion adherent will dress the way he feels simply because his father's religion needs to be recognized in their mode of dressing...

The thing is ...when you get to muslim schools they'll force you to wear hijab even when you're a christian especially in public schools in sokoto State... Public schools ooo... But instigate that there'll be no hijab in a Private school poop... they'll start barking up and down...

Religion fighting for a right that they themselves won't gv others who come to their land.

Some people migrated to other people's land and started shouting that their religious symbols is offensive to them. But in their own land, you can't even talk, how much more to complain about their own religious symbols.

It doesn't take rocket science to know the religion am talking about.

If you want to wear any religious symbols of your choice, establish your own school and wear what ever you like.

Stop going to other people's school that already have a laid down dressing code and start forcing yourself on them.

Oh.... First of all, start by allowing isese worshipers to do their thing in Kwara first before coming out to complain.

First off, no public universities have banned the hijab in Nigeria. Not funaab, not anyone. The only religious clothing they have issues with is the niqab: which is basically a mask whose wearers sometimes even cover their eyes. A lot of developed countries both inside and outside of the middle east have banned the niqab-even some Muslim majority Arab countries.

Charity begins at home. Tell your governors to stop receiving share of taxes paid by brewery companies.

Don't mind them. If you know the capital of Pakistan, then you will understand better

Precisely! The one i don't understand is insisting on going to a traditionally Christian school with an established dress code and ethos, then wanting to disrupt activities with all sorts of ridiculous demands.....more so when there are Islamic schools abound!
