Very annoying masquerades, the Oriokpa.

That was how people watched while they flogged a lady on okada. They mostly harass okada men and their passengers, extorting them and letting pass, the motorists.

The lady they were flogging was shielding something and it turned out she had a baby! People gathered the boys and nearly beat them but, they left. I could only watch from a distance. What could I have done?! Not an indigene myself but I hate the culture of masquerades here.

Ladies don't wear trousers (or skirts in some places) except tying wrappers. Mtchew

Have a day or period of celebration and notify people. Don't just jump out and start harassing people, even their own villagers.

Nsukka is a university town, and so, a multi-tribal place. You can't just up and do anyhow to anybody you see. Doesn't make sense.

My husband has said that the day they try rubbish, he's going to hold one down and deal with that one, even if hundred others are flogging him. cheesy I still beg him o.

I endured it in 2019, when I was beaten in Nsukka. Endured again in 2021, when these same people wiped me two powerful ones on the back, when coming from school.

Today again, I have chested another one for the culture.
But I swear by the filaments and the skies, the next these wicked idiots hiding under the cloak of a masquerade attire will lash me again, I will definitely retaliate.I swear.

Both the person hiding inside the cloak, the idiots following him or her around, and the gods they are representing, will feel the heat, that day. I swear and I swear.
Heh God! That fool inside that masquerade gown should thank his stars that I was held by some people yesterday evening, I would have shown the world a side of me that I have hiding for too long now.

You should come and see the intensity this guy used to wipe me that raffian stick this evening.
Yes, I know I have been owing lots of people lately, but for goodness' sake, why not come directly and ask for your money. Be a man, for goodness' sake.
Must I be flogged?

Ask for your money, you coward. The highest I will do is refuse to pay you, or maybe threaten you on top.
Come like a man and ask for your money
Must I be flogged?

Irregularities sighted.

Which day were you beaten gan gan.
Was it yesterday or today?

They can't even try it with me. I went to an event at ekwulobia I decide to go for a smoke somewhere isolated while there I saw two guys dressing a third guy in a masquerade attire after they were done they approached me and I just gave them money and they left.

Some years ago, I and my friend that works for the DSS were moving around in Nssuka on one Sunday evening around 4pm when the masquerades came and attacked us. They were beating some young boys around while we were on the other side of the road walking and just observing. Two of them started running towards us with their long whips ready to start whipping us because we didnt run away like others. He quickly brought out his pistol and started shooting towards their direction when they were just a few feets away from us. Come see how all of them took off shouting and screaming in Igbo. I will never forget that day 😁😁

I have been a victim three times. An average Nsukka person supports this evil the name of masquerade. This culture is outdated and barbaric. Many lives have been lost because of this useless thing. Even if you stay out of their way, one day you will mistakenly fall a victim. They flog you for fun even when you want to give them money. It's pure wickedness.

During my first year in UNN, oriokpa Nsukka one day, accosted and surrounded me while I was on my c 90 cube, returning from a lecture. They flogged me mercilessly, targeting my eyes, but I kept my cool. When they left, I rode straight to the police station only to get there and find about twelve masquerades already arrested for the same crime. The officer at the counter asked what my complaint was, and after I had explained, he said: "look at those figures sitting on the floor, are they not masquerades?" I affirmed they were, and he asked: "Do you want us to turn every corner here into masquerade cells?" I said I didn't know. Then, he said: "Go and endure it my brother. In four years time you will leave here, and experience it no more."
I didn't utter another word as I left, but kept in my mind that I will one day, avenge myself of that humiliation. My people, I kept planning on how to go about the vengeance until I graduated and left the Nsukka.
