Obasanjo Under Fire As APC, Yoruba Elders, Others Carpet Him Over Remarks On Obas IndependentSep 17, 2023 6:27 AM KAZEEM AWOJOODU; RAJI ADEBAYO IBADAN – The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has taken a swipe at the former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, over an alleged verbal assault on traditional rulers from the state at an official function hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde at Iseyin on Friday. The APC said Obasanjo acted in bad faith and in clear demonstration of vindictive tendencies. In a short video clip which went viral on Friday evening, Obasanjo was captured castigating some monarchs and title chiefs for their reported failure to rise up in honour of him (Obasanjo) and Gov. Makinde while they were coming to the venue of the road project commissioning. The former president allegedly lampooned the traditional rulers and then ordered them to stand up and then sit down. Reacting to the development in a statement issued on Saturday, made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the Oyo State chapter of the APC said Obasanjo’s verbal assault against the traditional rulers was not accidental or coincidental, but premeditated, scripted and purposely delivered as a prize to people who had defied the former president on his mission to enthrone Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party against the popular choice of Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC in the last presidential election. “It is evident that Chief Obasanjo used the avenue of his questionable invitation to the road project commissioning to get back at certain individuals who openly rejected his presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the build up to the last general elections. “We recall that one of the monarchs on seat appeared on some private radio stations during the electioneering and mobilised support for Tinubu who won the election eventually. “This did not go down well with the former president who is popular for his vindictiveness and he used the opportunity handed down to him by one of his loyalists (Gov. Makinde) to hit back at his target. “Meanwhile, we condemn in strong terms the conduct of Chief Obasanjo who threw decorum into the wind on account of being a former president and chose to desecrate the rich culture and traditions of the Yoruba people. “By assaulting the monarchs, who were at the occasion on invitation, the Owu-born former military dictator had shown to the world that he was not worth his status as a statesman, title chief and leader on the African continent. “It is on record that despite ruling Nigeria for a combined period of 12 years, Obasanjo did not make any significant impact on the lives of the people of Oyo State as the best he did (and still does) was removing an elected governor of the state and refusing to add value in the areas of infrastructure, wealth creation and empowerment of our people. “So, the good people of the Pacesetter State do not hold him in high esteem and they expect little or nothing from him even if has another opportunity to become president again in future. “However, there is a pertinent question begging for answer regarding the choice of Obasanjo as the chairman of the occasion at the instance of Gov. Makinde. “The simple truth is that the whole scenario has further exposed the hypocrisy in Gov. Makinde who has done everything possible to claim the glory of President Bola Tinubu’s victory in Oyo State in the February 25 presidential election. “How can you be loyal to two opposing characters in a political contest at the same time? “It is obvious, Obasanjo is anti-Tinubu and Makinde is also pro-Obasanjo while we watch keenly as the governor continues his tricky game in the political space,” Sadare stated. Similarly, the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Council of Yoruba Elders (CYE), led by former Super Eagles Coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, has called for immediate public apology from Obasanjo for berating Oke-Ogun traditional rulers at a public function. CYE, in a statement issued over the development condemned the action of the former President and demanded for public apology from him to the concerned Obas. The statement was issued in Ibadan on Saturday by Secretary General of the organisation, Dr. Victor Taiwo, and Publicity Secretary, Lanre Ogundipe. Part of the statement read: “We write with great pains of the heart and regret of immeasurable quantum to imagine the ugly incident that occurred at Iseyin, Oyo State yesterday September 15, 2023 on the occasion of the road and LAUTECH Iseyin Campus commissioning ceremony by the Oyo State government where Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was invited as the Chief Guest of Honour. “It was at this occasion that we saw, through a video which has gone viral, Chief Obasanjo acting like an adept overwhelmed by the spirit of Sango celt, repugnantly vituperating and lambasting the large congregation of our Obas in attendance and commandeering them in the utmost contemptuous and denigrating manner to rise, and sit down like an Army General would to his soldiers. “When we saw this video, it initially occurred to us as a fictional movie. But, when it dawned on us that it was a reality, lo and behold, it was a scene that could burst one’s lachrymal gland into rupture. “For one thing, what Obasanjo did was defiling our Yoruba culture and tradition. It was a taboo. It was an errant display of megalomania and utter rudeness to our crowns in Yorubaland. “The position of our Obas could be discerned from their appellation as the Igbakeji Orisa (Second-in-Command to the deity). “And so, that the desecration of our Obas has come from a person of the status of Obasanjo, whose Yoruba identity is under question, is a great shame and denigration of the Yoruba culture and tradition. “We, therefore, condemn this dastardly act from Obasanjo in all totality and so, we call for his public apology to all the disgraced Obas and the entire Yoruba people by extension. “While we condemn the arrogant act of Obasanjo, we also feel ashamed and let down by all the Obas in attendance who kowtowed to the command of the lesser mortal as a pupil would their teacher.” Another socio-cultural group named Ebedi Frontliners, Iseyin (EFI), called on Obasanjo to apologise to traditional rulers in Oke-Ogun over his outburst at the commissioning of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH)’s College of Agricultural Science and Renewable Natural Resources, Iseyin on Friday. But, Maja-Maja, another Yoruba group, cautioned those castigating Obasanjo for asking Oke- Ogun traditional rulers present at the commissioning of some projects executed by Governor Makinde to stand up to greet the governor. The Maja-Maja specifically warned those using the opportunity to reignite their “satanic lie” that the former President is an Igbo and not a Yoruba to desist from such act in the best interest of the Yoruba race and posterity. 1 Like |

Sultanofpiglets:It is easy to know them Obi supporters . Always give justification to bad thing in the name of politic. Tinubu is not the title of Discussion but Obasanjo. It is very parthetic for you people give justifications to any bad thing done once the person is supporting or sharing same political views with yours. 4 Likes |

Obasanjo original intension was not to disrespect the crowns. People simply misconstrued his intension and then blow it out of proportion just to whip ethnic sentiment in the person of FFK Why did Chicago State University released Tinubu's Transcript now? Sultanofpiglets:Hummm !!! Comment from a frustrated hulligance on the street. Stop crying Tinubu did it or Obasanjo did it .both incidents is condemnable for any reasonable Yoruba person .why are you now crying ??.Supporting Tinubu doesn't mean we should celebrate all what he did or said . But no one brought it up then. now it's obasanjos time but senseless for you to use old bad preincident to cover new ones . Oga you can't expect everyone to be emotional driving like Obi's and IPOB supporters who always defend and follow anything that comes out from their camp even if it is bad. |

Sultanofpiglets:You should have make sense but your first line of approach. Tinubu and Obasanjo are not bad but what obasanjo and Tinubu did is bad . Ok if someone make mistake today you don't need to condemn the totality of that person bcs mistake can be corrected if not IPOB / Obi's supporters who can never listen to any correction. |

Obasanjo is not a Yoruba man. He only used Yoruba name to rise to power. Compare his face with Obi Ezekwesili's face. Compare the shape of their heads. Only dem dem have that. The old soldier who Impregnated OBJ's Mum without taking responsibility for him made his mother's family take it with responsibility. OBJ antagonized anything Yoruba interest since he came to power in 1977. The good thing is he never tried to hide his stance. He fought Awolowo, Abiola till death. He killed Bola Ige. He had no project in South-West Nigeria throughout his 8 years in Power. If you have record of his support for Yoruba Interest, bring it on. Oh, I forgot he indirectly supported Tinubu by deceiving Obi to run so as to decimate Atiku. That is trying to protect himself though. |
