Ikaeniyan0:That means the FG will be subsidizing till eternity, as there is no way for either of those refineries to be profitable selling their output for less than it costs them to make it. As Nairalanda1 has already said, Nigerians are utterly delusional in wanting to keep their cake while eating it. The most inane aspect of all the whining about the subsidy and the never-ending slide of the Naira is that none of the groaners and moaners can see the obvious linkage between the two issues. Tinubu tried to bring the subsidy to a quick end because the FG had run out of foreigners willing to lend it money to throw away on selling cheap fuel to all of West Africa. That reality has not changed, especially with interest rates so much higher back in safe, credit-worthy Western countries, so the FG has no other source to turn to in "paying" for the subsidies Nigerians demand than ye olde printing presse, aka inflation. It is that inflation which is driving the Naira's value against the USD down like a stone - the indigent Nigerian masses may be easily fooled into thinking printing more money can magically make one better off, but US Dollar (and Euro, and Yen, and UK Pound) holders are not so easy to bamboozle. They won't part with their cash for the same price while domestically you're paying 22% more for everything from onions to cheap slippers. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Crude oil was over $100 during Jonathan's administration yet price of fuel was kept under N200 even after he attempted to remove subsidy. The damages APC have done to Nigeria, it would take a long time to undo. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Sylva2147: Subsidy is one of the things contributing to our debt. And since politicans make the decision to keep subsidy and have done so since 1999, it is still their fault ( Other things that keep us in debt is the fluctuations in oil price, import dependency and massive looting and corruption. Failure to diversify the economy worsens the matter). If we had kept petrol at N65 since 2011, by now subsidy costs would have been running between 900 to 1000 per liter, up from 34 naira in Dec 2011. And we would have been paying for the thing from other parts of the budget. Nothing like cheap fuel 1 Like |

The government's handling of petrol subsidies has indeed been a matter of concern. The Executive Director rightly points out the lack of sincerity in both intentions and actions. It's troubling that the NNPC appears to overstep its boundaries and disseminate half-truths. The situation raises questions about the authority behind arbitrary deductions for subsidy payments, especially after the President's declaration of removal. This situation reminds us of the 2020 probe into questionable NNPC withdrawals. Additionally, the lack of official statements regarding subsidies while international crude prices and the exchange rate surge suggests we're effectively back in a subsidy regime. It's crucial for the government to be clear and decisive, but more importantly, its actions should be guided by technically sound policies, public consensus, and administrative feasibility. Building a democracy centered on public trust and accountability is a fundamental necessity, and it's disheartening to see these issues persist in the government's policies and actions. 1 Like |

Tooreda: They did. The refineries did not work because the government then started selling fuel at a loss and paying a subsidy to cover the loss , and then the whole mess came in. Once you set the price of a good or service below what it costs to produce, there would be sabotage, corruption and evil doings and wrecked production instruments. Because things need a profit to run well. Niger is poorer than us, they produce crude and they have a working refinery because they sell fuel at a profit. Right now it is above 1000 per liter there. The army junta has not reduced the price. Communist countries used to subsidize food. The result? Long queues and massive scarcity of products. Then they dumped the subsidy. |

nairalanda1: Where you are getting it wrong is not about having refinery but the product. We have the product, but fg refuse to allow the investing NIGERIA public to build smaller refinery because of dangote investment. If you create competition, price will definitely come down, no rocket science about that. 3 Likes |

MEGAWATCH: 1. There are 4 other refineries apart from dangote that are privately owned. Government is not stopping anyone 2. The issue is the uncertainty over pricing. Since government is obviously still controlling prices, why should someone set up a private modular refinery and losse money? And why should lenders lend money to such a refinery if they won't get their money back? 20 licences have been issued for private refineries, Dangote included. Does that strike you as government not letting people set up refinery? |
