Premium Times Nigeria Pandora Papers: Law firm writes CCB, demands prosecution of Peter Obi The lawyer asks CCB to take constitutional action within 30 days, or it will ask a court to compel it to do so. By Oluwakemi Adelagun March 27, 2023 A Lagos-based law firm, Lawflex, has asked the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to prosecute the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 25 February election, Peter Obi, for failing to declare the assets he stashed in tax havens while serving as a state governor. In the letter written on Thursday, signed by Olukoya Ogungbeje and received by the CBB the same day, the firm said its purpose is to bring to the CCB’s notice an investigation on the issue done by PREMIUM TIMES. The PREMIUM TIMES 2021 investigation provides details of Mr Obi’s investments in some notorious tax havens which he did not disclose in his mandatory CCB filings before and after leaving office as governor of Anambra State. The businesses were set up and operated overseas, including in notorious tax and secrecy havens in ways that breach Nigerian laws. Other prominent Nigerians involved in similar offshore dealings include the former Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah; the acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Mohammed Bello-Koko; former governor of Osun, Gboyega Oyetola and his Kebbi State counterpart, Atiku Bagudu. They have all denied any wrongdoing. The law firm said that Mr Obi flouted the code of conduct for Nigerian public officials and urged the CCB to “act appropriately” by arraigning the former governor before the “Code of Conduct Tribunal for contravention of the Code of Conduct for Nigerian Public Officers as spelt out in the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, (As Amended).” Violation Mr Peter Obi failed to declare his offshore holdings and their associated assets. As a governor, he also continued to operate and maintain foreign accounts including with Lloyds in the UK. The former governor admitted that he did not declare these companies and the funds and properties they hold in his asset declaration filings with the Code of Conduct Bureau, the Nigerian government agency that deals with the issues of corruption, conflict of interest, and abuse of office by public servants. He said he was unaware that the law expected him to declare assets or companies he jointly owns with his family members or anyone else. After becoming the governor, he continued to be a director of Next International (UK) Limited for 14 months. Ultimatum Mr Ogungbeje urged the CCB to immediately investigate the violation and invite Mr Obi for questioning. The lawyer warned that if the CCB refuses to take constitutional action within 30 days, his firm would seek a “judicial review by way of an Order of Mandamus in a court of competent jurisdiction in a bid to compel performance of public duty https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/590307-pandora-papers-law-firm-writes-ccb-demands-prosecution-of-peter-obi.html 4 Likes

Go to court, stop talking rubbish..The man is clean. He committed no crime with the Pandora paper. Meanwhile Tinubu is a drug lord and there is no soap anyone is going to use to wash that. At least this shows, they are beginning to see that they are going no where. The last kick of a dead horse. 8 Likes 1 Share |

This whole thing is getting interesting. The UK that is supposed to prosecute Peter Obi for moving his earnings to offshore accounts didn't prosecute him but one yeye lawyer wants the CCB to indict and prosecute him. Tinubu should accept the court invitation served on him ASAP so that the proceedings can start. We are all looking forward to that. If they are trying to distract Peter Obi with this Pandora thing, they had failed before they got started. 8 Likes 1 Share |

But in today's Nigeria, I don't think there is any politician as clean as they are. You can't say that about tulumbu. Tinubu is a catalogue of fraud, drug, fake identity, and so on. Bring it on. The victory will be sweeter. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Kenneth4u205:Do they have sense? And what law did Obi break by opening an offshore company in the name of his children and transferring his wealth to them to secure their future? Something that is allowable under law. Obi did not break any law. You cannot declare what does not belong to you anymore as your asset or worth. You cannot declare a jointly owned asset with family members as yours. You can only declare what belongs to you alone. If you transfer your wealth to a relative or friend, it no longer belongs to you but the person you transferred it to. Una de chase breeze abi wind. The world is only interested in knowing what Tinubu is hiding with Chicago State University that will cause him an irreparable damage according to Tinubu. We just want to know and move on. We know even if FBI declare Tinubu wanted for drug trafficking today, that Supreme Court Injustice will still uphold Tinubu's mandate, so whatever we are doing is just for the world to see and for posterity sake not that Nigeria's corrupt judiciary will sack or disqualify Tinubu. We don't even want to talk about the Pandora Papers that also mentioned Bola Tinubu and his cousin Oyetola he used as his money laundering front and investment front also, because we know the Pandora papers have no legal weight or implication to be wasting time on it 2 Likes 1 Share

SmartPolician: @the bolded.... You mean "The whole thing is getting interesting. The CSU that's supposed to prosecute Tinubu for forging it's certificate didn't do so but one yeye Atiku wants the courts to indict and procesute him" That's where Tinubu will always win y'all . He went through the same CCB and came out unscratched. Advice your lying machine to make himself available for CCT. 3 Likes |

franchasofficia: Fair enough But To what end? It wasn't prayed in your court cases It's an invasion of privacy and CSU that is the custodian of the records have their integrity to protect and will release the records. So let's watch and see You lie about the assets declaration. That you jointly own something with other shouldn't excuse you from reporting it as the law requires......his only defence was that he wasn't aware of the provisions of the law...and in law ignorance is not an excuse. If you own shares in FBN....just declare the percentage of share you own BAT is the master of this game. What if I tell you all this is a game.....an intentional game played by BAT and his team to keep you guessing and busy. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Rolings:You are not required to declare what you own jointly with family members, go figure out. You can declare your share with public liability companies. I don't think our law mandates you to declare what you jointly own with your family members, ask a more experienced legal practitioner, but I think that's how it works though I could be wrong. As for Tinubu being master of political games. My brother, Tinubu is no master anything. Tinubu was only lucky to become Lagos Governor in 1999 that Nigeria entered the secone phase of democracy. And you know Lagos doesn't have rugged indigenous people or politicians who could have stopped Tinubu from capturing Lagos from 1999 to date. That can only happen in Lagos state. Other politicians that tried it in other states failed because other states have ruthless indigenes and politicians like Tinubu too who can't allow one man to hold their state on hostage for 23years counting and nobody dared challenge him. Powerful Uba family tried it in Anambra and failed. Rochas tried in Imo and failed. Nnamani tried in Enugu and failed. Shekarau tried in Kano and failed, Orji Uzo Kalu tried in Abia and failed, Amaechi tried it in Rivers and failed, Igbinedion tried in Edo and failed, Ibori tried in Delta and failed, and so many others. Lagos is like the unofficial headquarter of Nigeria in virtually everything; economy, business, trade, etc. If you check records, most political riots that started from Lagos always gain momentum faster than one started anywhere else in Nigeria and the reason is because Lagos is the melting point of Nigeria where virtually all tribes are largely represented so its more like Nigeria inside Nigeria. So Tinubu capitalized on Lagos huge IGR he confiscated after his tenure using Stooges he installs as Governors to control Lagos wealth which he used to play politics of money throwing which is what works in Nigeria. If you have plenty money to throw more than opponents in Nigerian politics, you will always have an upper hand in virtually everything. Tinubu clearly lost the election, he came 3rd. His only saving grace is that he was flying the ticket of a ruthless ruling party that is not yet ready to relinquish power to the opposition. Buhari didn't want Tinubu to succeed him initially, he had 3 preferred candidates; Rotimi Amaechi, Osinbajo and Ogbonnaya Onu. When Tinubu used his montery influence to buy the APC ticket, Buhari wasn't moved cos he is a very wicked man who only works for his own interest only, so he felt anybody can win between Tinubu and Atiku that it doesn't concern him. But Northern APC Governors opened Buhari's eyes through his wife Aisha. They made Buhari to understand the risk of letting the power go back to PDP, they told Aisha the risk that she and other of her family members could be prosecuted and witch hunted like Buhari did to PDP chieftains. Aisha started working on Buhari and Buhari regained his lost senses almost close to the election, which made Buhari switch to Tinubu's side fully. They never expected Obi to even get close, their whole focus was on Atiku but Tinubu did not want to take chances so he used his usual Lagos treasury to work on INEC to turn off result upload for Presidential election result because Tinubu's camp warned Tinubu not to underrate Obi because initially Tinubu was focusing more on the North hoping to defeat Atiku there, and thinking he would floor Obi in South except Southeast. So forget stories, Tinubu lost shamefully, it was INEC's switching off of the polling unit result upload that saved Tinubu by giving them opportunity to doctor the results during manual collation, if not, Tinubu wouldn't have scored up to 200,000 votes in Lagos state |

franchasofficia: I'm sure you don't believe what you wrote here. They have asked you for a copy of your own results, signed by INEC, your agents and other party agents which contradicts what is in IREV, but you could not provide it. Obi and Atiku themself knows that they lost. While I understand your pains, but distorting facts will not help any of you . |
