Did You Know Before Ewekoro Cement was taken over and privatized, Western Region was the one producing cement there called West African Portland Company with 39% Stake, UAC 10% Stake, APCM 51% stake. There were about 30 ventures formed by the WNDC in partnerships with individuals and corporate entities especially foreign companies. Companies formed in Partnership with the Western Nigerian Government Through Western Nigeria Development Cooperation ( WNDC) 1. Nigerian Plastic Company (1954) - Ibadan - WNDC 50% ( £32500) 2. Nidogas - Lagos - WNDC 30% (£30,000) 3.Nigersol Construction Company (1959) - Ibadan - WNDC 60% [ £120,000] 4. Nigerian Water Resources Development Company(1959) - Ibadan- WNDC 60% (£60,000) 5. Pepsi Products- The soft drink of Western Nigerian Government. The most important thing is that the partnerships became one of the most successful ventures that enamoured the industrial economy of Western Nigeria from the 1960s. kettykin: Are you surprised? The folks who took it over didn't know the importance in the first place. One of the results on the myopic decision of Ironsi to kill the regions. WNTV was taken over and became NTA as well. 3 Likes |

Biafrannuke: Ironsi abolished the regions Azikiwe kicked against the exit clause in the constitution. He was the first to use the phrase “one Nigeria” A coup led by mostly Igbo soldiers killed leaders in other regions but spared theirs. After that you expected the North who were most affected to have taken it lying low. During the war, the Biafran soldiers buried Ikwerre men and others in the SS alive and raped their women After the war, Yorubas returned their properties to them after the war but they lost all they had in PH. Yorubas have taken enough from these ungrateful and intolerant lots PBAT made a mistake by appointing one of them a Commissioner as Governor when when a Governor in Anambra would never appoint a PS from Ebonyi Very ungrateful lots 6 Likes |

Uchek: No region was abolished but their autonomy was reduced and the center was bestowed with more power. This was done in total disregard to the constitution that all the tribes agreed to. Note: Regions since 1914 are given along with Lagos Federal Territory formed in 1954. The Eastern and Western regions gained self-rule in 1957 as did the Northern region in 1959. Military governors were installed after the coup of 15 Jan 1966. During the abolition of federalism 24 May - 31 Aug 1966, the regions were re-designated "groups of provinces," and the governors continued in office under the new designations. In 27 May 1967 the regions were dissolved and 12 states created instead. Copied https://www.worldstatesmen.org/Nigeria_regions.html ng-government-gazette-supplement-dated-1966-05-24-no-51-part-a.pdf "civil servants and university students of northern origin fearful of future career prospects in the public service. As former President Shehu Shagari put it in his biography “Beckoned to Serve”, …’From the northern viewpoint, the implications of all this in terms of distribution of power, the allocation of public resources and amenities, the prospect of Igbo and southern domination, and the threat to mainstream northern ways of life were unmistakable.’ Opposition to unification in particular was spearheaded by northern students and civil servants" Copied It is on record that the northern military boys that struck, led by Murtala Mohammed, had commandeered planes at Ikeja Airport to leave the Federation with their families. Just because the chance of competitiveness with other regions don't exist under Unification Decree 3 Likes |
