Israeli police this morning arrested five Orthodox Jews suspected of spitting toward or near Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem's Old City yesterday. This is a pretty severe move. While Christians might appreciate Israel's dedication to protecting their freedom of worship in Jerusalem, the move is likely to increase tensions within Israeli society. Orthodox Jews also at times suffer similar harassment at the hands of Muslims and secular Israeli Jews with no such repercussions. They will no doubt wonder why they are punished while others are not. ( IT) |

Some 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers walked off the job Wednesday in multiple states, kicking off a major health care strike in an extraordinary year for U.S. labor organizing and work stoppages. Kaiser Permanente is one of the country’s larger insurers and health care system operators, serving nearly 13 million people. The nonprofit company, based in Oakland, California, said its 39 hospitals, including emergency rooms, will remain open during the picketing, though appointments and non-urgent procedures could be delayed. The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, representing about 85,000 of the health system’s employees nationally, approved a strike for three days in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, and for one day in Virginia and Washington, D.C. |

Iran: Regime Fears Second 'Mahsa Amini' Incident as 16-Year-Old in Coma After Being Reportedly Assaulted by 'Morality Police' Around two weeks following the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's tragic death, the Iranian regime faces a new incident with potentially explosive consequences. As you may recall, about a year ago, widespread protests erupted in Iran that persisted for several months after the tragic death of an Iranian girl named Mahsa Amini, who was brutally beaten by Iran's 'Morality Police' for not wearing a hijab. Last Sunday, a 16-year-old student named Armita Geravand was rushed to the Iranian military hospital "al-Fajr" after sustaining head injuries and losing consciousness at the Shahada train station in Tehran. According to sources within the Iranian opposition, she, like Mehsa Amini, had been assaulted by members of Iran's 'Morality Police' for not covering her head with a hijab. Subsequently, Armita has been hospitalized under strict security measures at the Iranian Air Force Hospital in Tehran, and is now in a coma. Human rights organizations have reported that authorities confiscated the cell phones of Armita's family members, at one point even detaining her parents. Officially, the authorities claim that Armita "fainted due to a drop in blood pressure." Armita's mother also echoed this official version. In practice, it appears that the regime is deeply troubled by the escalating incident, which is gaining traction on social media and is taking all possible measures to prevent a recurrence of the protests witnessed last year. The Israeli Shin Bet has warned Israel National Security Minister Ben Gvir in recent days against going up to the Temple Mount during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot ending in a few days. Ben Gvir responded that "my ascent to the Temple Mount is sacred, the timing is not." Ben Gvir plans to climb the Temple Mount tomorrow morning. Risk of Escalation if he does. Ben Gvir’s demands are “changing the status quo” of the Temple Mount area. Ben Gvir wants to give settlers 24-7 access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to a letter written by Ben Gvir to lawmakers in the Knesset. Ben Gvir is known for his participation in settler incursion into Al-Aqsa Mosque, which went up dramatically during the Jewish holiday season. “My goal is to continue progress on the Temple Mount, and I will continue to work on this issue.”

During the Jerusalem March yesterday, hundreds, perhaps thousands of religious and Orthodox Jews were there to cheer on and embrace the Christian marchers. Interactions were warm and friendly. The number of religious Jews who reacted to the Christian presence in this way far outnumbers the few who spit at Christians in the Old City a day earlier. But you won't see any international headlines about that. (Israel Today )
