Although I don't know your end game for wanting to relocate, but I'll drop my nuggets based on my experience (how the society works, what I have read and what I think).

As a 38-year-old man, you will find universities to admit you but might not be the top 15 or Imperial Universities (Japan's version of the Ivy League). Universities will admit you because there are few students to pick from, as birth rates are declining rapidly. Japan has many universities, so I implore you to do your research starting from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_universities_in_Japan

Why national universities? They are cheaper, just like Federal Universities in Nigeria. Public universities exist, but cost slightly higher than national universities, aka state universities in Nigeria. Then private universities, just like dem Covenant and Madonna.

Depending on your program and finances, I recommend you opt for a research student (研究生) position in a national university outside the Kanto and Kansai regions. You spend six months learning the nitty-gritty of your eventual research theme, then apply officially to be admitted into the MSc program. You will be allowed to work part-time (28 hours max per week). Part-time jobs are plentiful. As your Japanese improves, your options widen, and salaries increase. Why outside Kansai and Kanto? Those regions have the major cities in the country and are expensive. Also, because of the high number of foreigners in both regions, you will use English occasionally. Due to your age, language school is out of the question as none will admit you without an N3 certificate. Since you are coming in as a graduate student and also advanced in age intending to "hustle", you need to be in an environment with minimal English usage and more Japanese.

All things being equal, you will graduate by 42, depending on the route you enter (research student or graduate student) and when you commence your studies. However, upon graduation, due to your age, don't expect plum jobs because there are way many young people (foreigners, homegrown and foreign-grown Japanese) with superior degrees, skills and experience who will be preferred. But you will get jobs, but not the best of them. If you choose any areas outside Kanto and Kansai, you might get a factory job depending on your network and Japanese ability. Factory jobs pay pretty well, depending on the industry, but you will work very hard and long hours (it is a tradition here). Your options within those non-Kanto and Kansai areas will increase if you have technical skills like tech. Salaries won't be as high as in Kanto and Kansai, but the cost of living would be low.

As a graduate student, you can bring dependents, which is subject to your proof of finance submitted to immigration authorities. Ultimately, it depends on what you intend to achieve out of the process and long-term goals. Finally, searching for schools and following the entire process depends on you.

Six million is not enough. Even during 2020 when I began my research, six million would not have done it. Please use Google to search for the tuition fees of national universities, convert to dollars then naira (use black market rates). You have to show evidence of living expenses to the school which is submitted to the immigration bureau in the city for your COE (Certificate of Eligibility) to be processed. Without the COE, you cannot apply for visa. With the COE, visa issuance is almost guaranteed. This is for entry directly into a graduate school program.

Alternatively, apply through the research student route. The fees are lower, and the duration is six months. Before the six months ends, you can apply for visa extension to two years and three months upon admission into the graduate program (MSc).

Please do your research. Everything is online. Read through the last ten pages of this thread. I plead with you.

Salaries would be higher than in most areas, but you cannot rent an apartment on it within the area. You would have to live far away to adjust for living expenses.

I don't know how ALTs are hired, but I know that Zoom interviews are an integral part of interviewing in Japan. Before there is a physical meet-up, interviewers want to see applicants via Zoom. So, I am a bit sceptical. Before an offer is issued, I strongly believe there must be an online meeting. If such can be requested from people in the country, how much more for someone in faraway Africa, considering the process involved in applying for a COE on your behalf?

He is waiting for the next step which is likely to be COE. They offered her 250,000 Yen per month with other bonuses and benefits. They are not asking for money or anything yet though. We are just concerned that she is asked to resume within 2 months. We thoughts ALTS programmes run from April to March every year. But her employment is coming in October November period, that's why we are kind of bothered.

What I know about the process is that before any talk of resumption, the company will inform you about the items you need for your visa application:

Background Check
CoE Application Form
ID Photos
Emergency Contacts
Transcripts
Schooling Letters

Now, you will be required to send physical copies of your transcripts, schooling letters, and ID photos to the company in Japan by courier, as these documents are needed for your CoE application, which the company will submit to Immigration.

When the CoE is ready (usually taking from 4-8 weeks or more), the company will send it to you, either by mail or courier, and this is when you can apply for an instructor visa to enter Japan.

Search for organisations that offer English lessons and apply. I have no idea of their recruitment process. The information is online. However, because it is English, you will find posts/comments by mostly Westerners complaining of long hours and low pay, none of which don't apply to you as a black African. With your degrees and hopefully knowledge of leetcode, you can change to a tech job while in Japan. Alternatively, search for recruiting firms if you have at least three years of experience to get tech jobs. Jobs are not the issue, but whether companies would be willing to sponsor someone from abroad or if the person speaks/understands Japanese is where the issue lies. The fastest route is the English teaching role.

Your educational qualifications are in order, as the minimum requirement for visa issuance for employment purposes by the immigration authority is a bachelor's degree.

POF is not required for CoE application or an Instructor visa for that matter.

The company will only recommend to have ¥500k, or at least ¥250k for living/initial startup costs as salaries are paid on the 20th of the following month.

In that case, you can deposit the funds into the account and send the proof.

Another of her requirements is a travel insurance certificate for one year at a reputable insurance company. Abeg guys, @Gerrad59 and @JohnQueen, help oo. How can she go about the travel insurance certificate for one year?

You can purchase insurance once you have confirmed your flight and travel dates.

Not sure about 1 year o, but it's recommended to have a minimum of 6 weeks of comprehensive medical travel insurance to make sure you are
covered until your Japanese insurance takes effect.

There are a couple you can look up... AXA Mansard, AIICO etc.

While there are good sources of information about Japan from a foreign perspective, sieve what you read as the majority of members/posters are Westerners whose view point differs from citizens of developing countries. For instance, the majority of foreigners in Japan are Chinese, Vietnamese, and Koreans, but since they are not English speakers, you will get a one-sided view of foreigners living in Japan on Reddit. Even the blacks there or posts by black people are written from the lens of an African American, who are culturally different from black Africans.

1. The organisation that applied on her behalf. The immigration has no business communicating with her/visa applicant as she/the visa applicant did not apply at the bureau.

2. No. However, citizens of countries which enjoy visa waiver access to Japan can travel as tourists, but to become a resident, they have to return to their home country to get the COE, apply to the embassy there and move to Japan, upon which they will exchange the COE for the residence card. Without the residence card, life is useless for residents in Japan.
