I was called away before I could finish the thread. I wanted to use the last post to address a misconception that I knew would arise.

GOVERNMENT DOES NOT SPONSOR PILGRIMAGES

Once upon a time, in the 1980s and 1990s, the Federal Government used to pay for pilgrims to travel to Israel, the Vatican and Saudi Arabia. That practice ended with the return to democracy in 1999.

Nowadays pilgrims pay the government to organise their pilgrimages. The role of government is to provide consular services and to take care of the pilgrims in case of emergencies like the present situation.

In fact, the complaints are now the opposite of what they used to be. The complaints in recent times is that some officials of the Pilgrims Board steal money that has been paid by pilgrims or they somehow make money from the scheme. Action has been taken against some officials. See example below.
