.....izzou. Do you agree with Umahi's decision to constructing our roads with concrete [cement] as against asphalt [bitumen]?!

Nope

I do not entirely subscribe to using cement only.

The very first issue is that they are very expensive, and the country does not have that now. The money you will use to construct a 400km of concrete, may construct up to 700km of asphalt. At a time when we are struggling to have good roads everywhere, why should we do that?

There is nothing wrong with Asphalt. Advanced countries still use Asphalt, even more that concrete. I just don't understand how we became so obsessed with cement overnight.

I can go on and on with comparisons, but it can also be found on Google.

The first and only issue is that we cannot be wasting scarce resources on concrete

I listened to a programme (man around town) where the host invited major BUA dealers in Edo state...

The summary of what was said was BUA only removed 500 per bag, thus, in reality consumers should expect approximately #500 reduction ie from #6000to #5500...

When asked to elaborates,he said and I paraphrased....we tend to buy from a range of #4000 (when you are responsible for moving the cements from factory to #4500 when BUA is sending it down.."diesels,levies and extremely bad roads are responsible for the hike in price not just d quest for profit alone before.

Now a reduction of #500 ...from 4000 to 3500 and 4500 to 4000 will only reflects in the consumer's

And it is not fair, what's is being spread across cos they (the marketers) would be the one to be stoned and the BUA praised...

From day 1 I have said it is just a marketing gimmick. Bua has three factories in adamawa, sokoto and edo. I said if you live in close proximity to the factory then you get it at 3500. But Bua does not do last mile retail. The dealer has to move the cement, store the cement and make his profit.

......according to him, Contractors are using adultrated bitumen thus affecting quality of the asphalt roads.

He made mention of East-West Road from Bayelsa to River Axis which is completely washed off already, then compare it to concrete roads built by Dangote in Lagos.

Also, Cement Manufacturers have keyed in and promised to supply Contractors at cheaper rate. He further argued that it also will reduce pressure on Naira since there won't be need for Bitumen importation anymore.

Kindly watch the link bro, honestly he made valid points.

I think the media just turned this whole thing around. I am not misleading anybody

BUA gave an ex-factory price of 3,500. This means BUA is going to sell at 3,500.

So how can i buy it at 3,500 and sell it for you at 3,500?

The only thing BUA can guarantee is the rate they release it from their factory. I can turn around and slam 100K on it. What can BUA do about it?

Its business, distance from factory, or absence of competition in my market will always determine price it gets to consumers.

The argument for concrete roads is if done well they are mostly maintainence free. The problem is our maintenance is shit. I know a guy who worked on maintenance work crews in the UK. Every night they would go out to fix bad parts of roads. And the great thing about asphalt - it is good to go in 30 minutes.

I agree with you. In the current economic climate, a concrete road is what we call 'a nice to have'. Looks great in the presentation but awful in the budget

East West road became terrible when the last floods came. How can a minister be comparing that to Apapa Oshodi expressway that does not experience any floods?

Also, concrete roads do well under oil spills, but they are not flexible, so they can break if a heavy object falls on it.

Concrete roads are easier to maintain but expensive to repair. The inverse goes for Asphalt.

The money they are spending on concrete roads can revive a Bitumen plant here and create jobs, thereby providing the specified Bitumen for the job.

That is actually poor supervison from the bribe taking clowns in ministry of works.

And the same also applies to concrete. The concrete used by ccecc for instance is far lower quality than the concrete used for older bridges and road dividers. Concrete that aboki break with hand tools.

There are all sorts of ways to get shit concrete esp from dodgy Nigerian vendors

The road was washed away because there is no proper drainage. This is about planning. I am not impressed with these utterances from umahi.

Sounds like he has not actually thought through the issues.

Yeah. I think that is where Nigerians misunderstood it, or BUA wanted to be mischievous

You are selling to a wholesaler at 3500 and you are announcing it.

Is he supposed to sell at 3500 too?

The reason i made that analogy is simple.

Hamas are terrorists. The Israelis are oppressors. Maniacal Jihadists vs Genocidal oppressors. A match made in the desert.

I choose to be neutral.

I can not support terrorists as I grew up a Christian living in Kaduna South and actually was just 100m away from the blast radius of a jihadi suicide bomber in 2012 so I know first hand how evil Arab ideology is.

I can’t support Israel because I am a Nigerian youth who witnessed the Nigerian government oppress me and other youth with SARS and even commit genocide against unarmed protesters

That is my perspective on the matter. I don’t have to support either party

Let's look at this current war. Israel is not occupying Gaza before this current war. Israel left. Jews left Gaza.

Israel is controlling the airspace and seaports and you know why already. Isreal is doing that for their own safety. Those guys can imports deadly weapons just to harm the state of Israel.

Isreal is supplying them food, electricity, medical stuff and other stuff. Just recently the boarder was open just so they can come work into Israel to work and go home.

Look at Egypt, her boarder is closed. What is Egypt doing for them? I don't even know.

To be fair, he is not asking them not to use bitumen. Just sign an agreement that the road will last 15 years and you won't request for more than 5% variation throughout the duration of the contract.

Maybe he meant cheaper in a long term.

Nothing is wrong with Asphalt. Just maintain it. Seal it every few years.

Umahi is starting to become the grandmaster of Elephant projects. No be him build airport wey flight no dey?

He can convince us that gold is best for constructing roads. He has earned that place.

I'm not sure if you were the one that posted that Dawn rail transportation plan here.

I'm not too excited about whatever DAWN is proposing because it seems everything always end on paper.

If they are serious, let them work on good road network first in the region before thinking about rail.

The White House is now beginning its press briefing and in about 2.5 hours Joe Biden is meeting with Jewish-American community leaders, accompanied by Doug Emhoff, husband of the US vice-president, Kamala Harris.

This is exactly what I was talking about. The joos run this world. They even have a guy in the White House right there with Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris husband was not elected.into office, but is being carried along by the president of the USA to meet Jewish-American leaders.

This is what true power looks like. Not running around carrying placard and crying that nobody likes us.
