Although I don't know your end game for wanting to relocate, but I'll drop my nuggets based on my experience (how the society works, what I have read and what I think).

As a 38-year-old man, you will find universities to admit you but might not be the top 15 or Imperial Universities (Japan's version of the Ivy League). Universities will admit you because there are few students to pick from, as birth rates are declining rapidly. Japan has many universities, so I implore you to do your research starting from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_universities_in_Japan

Why national universities? They are cheaper, just like Federal Universities in Nigeria. Public universities exist, but cost slightly higher than national universities, aka state universities in Nigeria. Then private universities, just like dem Covenant and Madonna.

Depending on your program and finances, I recommend you opt for a research student (研究生) position in a national university outside the Kanto and Kansai regions. You spend six months learning the nitty-gritty of your eventual research theme, then apply officially to be admitted into the MSc program. You will be allowed to work part-time (28 hours max per week). Part-time jobs are plentiful. As your Japanese improves, your options widen, and salaries increase. Preferably head to the Kyushu region as it has jobs (Fukokoa and Kyushu itself) or Chugoku (Hiroshima and Tottori).: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_of_Japan

Why outside Kansai and Kanto? Those regions have the major cities in the country and are expensive. Also, because of the high number of foreigners in both regions, you will use English occasionally. Due to your age, language school is out of the question as none will admit you without an N3 certificate. Since you are coming in as a graduate student and also advanced in age intending to "hustle", you need to be in an environment with minimal English usage and more Japanese.

All things being equal, you will graduate by 42, depending on the route you enter (research student or graduate student) and when you commence your studies. However, upon graduation, due to your age, don't expect plum jobs because there are way many young people (foreigners, homegrown and foreign-grown Japanese) with superior degrees, skills and experience who will be preferred. But you will get jobs, but not the best of them. If you choose any areas outside Kanto and Kansai, you might get a factory job depending on your network and Japanese ability. Factory jobs pay pretty well, depending on the industry, but you will work very hard and long hours (it is a tradition here). Your options within those non-Kanto and Kansai areas will increase if you have technical skills like tech. Salaries won't be as high as in Kanto and Kansai, but the cost of living would be low.

As a graduate student, you can bring dependents, which is subject to your proof of finance submitted to immigration authorities. Ultimately, it depends on what you intend to achieve out of the process and long-term goals. Finally, searching for schools and following the entire process depends on you.

Best wishes!
thank you so much for the honest response,I intend staying permanently with family in time to come..... and secure a better life for myself and my family.

Then my route is the most preferable. You need to have low expectations, be realistic and amenable to changes considering the culture, distance, language and your age. To cut cost, first come alone as carrying dependents would triple your costs. If you don't have plenty of money, don't target the Kanto and Kansai regions. Yes, other regions have fewer jobs, lower salaries and few foreigners, but they will be good starting points to quickly and by fire, by force grasp the language.

You would not be the first person that I know who has a family back home in Africa. But those folks are younger than you are and know Japanese to great levels.

P.S. The entire search about schools is entirely on you. Search for Majisuka's posts and read them.

thank you so much bro ....for the school I will sir........but how much should be my budget plan as am not too rich targeting 6million both school fees and package ?

Six million is not enough. Even during 2020 when I began my research, six million would not have done it. Please use Google to search for the tuition fees of national universities, convert to dollars then naira (use black market rates). You have to show evidence of living expenses to the school which is submitted to the immigration bureau in the city for your COE (Certificate of Eligibility) to be processed. Without the COE, you cannot apply for visa. With the COE, visa issuance is almost guaranteed. This is for entry directly into a graduate school program.

Alternatively, apply through the research student route. The fees are lower, and the duration is six months. Before the six months ends, you can apply for visa extension to two years and three months upon admission into the graduate program (MSc).

Please do your research. Everything is online. Read through the last ten pages of this thread. I plead with you.

Please, who knows about spring school in minato city, tokyo Japan?

They are hiring for ALT positions. I just want an Inn on them to know if they are truly genuine or not.

Your submissions will be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Although, I went through a through selection process but I didn't do a skype video interview with anyone. I applied, submitted some documents, wrote SOP, and did DEMO LESSON VIDEO too. Is this process a legit way of hiring ALTS in Japan?

I checked Google and did not see anything. Does the school have a website? If yes, kindly provide the link. Minato is like Maitama - a major elite area in Tokyo, and, invariably, the whole of Japan. Salaries would be higher than in most areas, but you cannot rent an apartment on it within the area. You would have to live far away to adjust for living expenses.

I don't know how ALTs are hired, but I know that Zoom interviews are an integral part of interviewing in Japan. Before there is a physical meet-up, interviewers want to see applicants via Zoom. So, I am a bit sceptical. Before an offer is issued, I strongly believe there must be an online meeting. If such can be requested from people in the country, how much more for someone in faraway Africa, considering the process involved in applying for a COE on your behalf?
Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by superdee01: 3:44pm On Oct 07, 2023
They actually have a website.
Their website is springschool.me/ja

They already sent an offer letter (employment letter) to a friend, they have equally sent the full contract of employment too. My friend has e-filled and returned it to them. He is waiting for the next step which is likely to be COE. They offered her 250,000 Yen per month with other bonuses and benefits. They are not asking for money or anything yet though. We are just concerned that she is asked to resume within 2 months. We thoughts ALTS programmes run from April to March every year. But her employment is coming in October November period, that's why we are kind of bothered.

What I know about the process is that before any talk of resumption, the company will inform you about the items you need for your visa application:

Background Check
CoE Application Form
ID Photos
Emergency Contacts
Transcripts
Schooling Letters

Now, you will be required to send physical copies of your transcripts, schooling letters, and ID photos to the company in Japan by courier, as these documents are needed for your CoE application, which the company will submit to Immigration.

When the CoE is ready (usually taking from 4-8 weeks or more), the company will send it to you, either by mail or courier, and this is when you can apply for an instructor visa to enter Japan.

That salary is the standard for fresh ALTs. No company is supposed to ask you for money before employing you. Yes, once you get the COE, the visa is approved, barring any unforeseen circumstances. That is the great thing about Japan's visa process - issuance of the COE means the embassy just to go through your application and approve it. Your friend should expect her visa within three days after the application. If she submits it on a Monday, she should get the visa by Thursday latest. The problem with the COE is that it takes almost three months to issue it. Although, the government wants to reduce it to a month for highly skilled workers.

ALTs run as the demand arises. I am currently an English teacher for a branded organisation and from the interview, the busiest periods are March, July, August, September and December. So, I believe it should almost be the same. The firm will help you both with finding an apartment, SIM registration and city taxes.

Welcome to Japan! cool

Are there specific requirements for securing an English-speaking job in Japan? I hold a BSc in Computer Science and a Master's in Information Science. Do I meet the qualifications, and could you outline the application process?

Search for organisations that offer English lessons and apply. I have no idea of their recruitment process. The information is online. However, because it is English, you will find posts/comments by mostly Westerners complaining of long hours and low pay, none of which don't apply to you as a black African. With your degrees and hopefully knowledge of leetcode, you can change to a tech job while in Japan. Alternatively, search for recruiting firms if you have at least three years of experience to get tech jobs. Jobs are not the issue, but whether companies would be willing to sponsor someone from abroad or if the person speaks/understands Japanese is where the issue lies. The fastest route is the English teaching role.

Your educational qualifications are in order, as the minimum requirement for visa issuance for employment purposes by the immigration authority is a bachelor's degree.

How many days is funds supposed to stay in her accounts for proof before she print it and send to her employer? Can the money be sent to her account while she just prints it immediately and send to them or it has a required number of days? She has been asked to send some documents so that her COE will be processed as soon as possible. Please I need responses. God bless you all.

POF is not required for CoE application or an Instructor visa for that matter.

The company will only recommend to have ¥500k, or at least ¥250k for living/initial startup costs as salaries are paid on the 20th of the following month.

I guess they want to know if she'll be able to support herself until she starts receiving her salary.

In that case, you can deposit the funds into the account and send the proof.

Like JohnQueen has stated, it is for living expenses before she starts receiving her salary. Salaries usually come a month later after employment. So, it might not be the usual month end, but at a specific date stated by the firm. I strongly recommend you show the proof of ¥600K as instructed because it is what you would actually need to cater for yourself before your salary drops. Also, I strongly suggest you have the ¥600K in its dollars equivalent, if possible to curtail against devaluation of the naira as the time for processing the COE and its delivery takes circa twelve weeks. As for the duration, the money should be in the account? It should be there until you receive the notification of approval of the COE. The usual documents I think would be bachelor degree certificate, passport photography, pledge and passport copy.

The main work is not the visa itself but the COE. Once the COE has been approved, the visa issuance is as good as done.

P.S. You sure say no be you be the person we dey talk about? 'Cos I am surprised she knows how to apply for ALTs jobs via the Internet but does not know Nigeria's most visited forum. grin

Another of her requirements is a travel insurance certificate for one year at a reputable insurance company. Abeg guys, @Gerrad59 and @JohnQueen, help oo. How can she go about the travel insurance certificate for one year?
Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by JohnQueen(m): 6:00pm On Oct 11, 2023
You can purchase insurance once you have confirmed your flight and travel dates.

Not sure about 1 year o, but it's recommended to have a minimum of 6 weeks of comprehensive medical travel insurance to make sure you are
covered until your Japanese insurance takes effect.

There are a couple you can look up... AXA Mansard, AIICO etc.

I used Mansard. Just check the website, see the quote for the chosen duration and pay. In return, you get an emailed copy of your insurance. I did insurance for less than a month. The Japanese medical insurance kicks in immediately after you get enrolled, and enrolment is mandatory. It is one of the first things she will do within two weeks of being in Japan.

None that I know. But to get on-time information about Japan, check reddit/movingtojapan, reddit/japan, reddit/japanlife, reddit/teachinginjapan. While there are good sources of information about Japan from a foreign perspective, sieve what you read as the majority of members/posters are Westerners whose view point differs from citizens of developing countries. For instance, the majority of foreigners in Japan are Chinese, Vietnamese, and Koreans, but since they are not English speakers, you will get a one-sided view of foreigners living in Japan on Reddit. Even the blacks there or posts by black people are written from the lens of an African American, who are culturally different from black Africans.

So, after the visa checklist documents have been submitted, is it the immigration in Japan that will notify her that her COE application is successful or the employer? Is it still possible for her to travel to Japan this year considering that COE application documents has just been sent to Japan for processing?
