Our problem is not that we import too much

Or problem is we don't export enough... Stop focusing on reducing import focus on increasing export it's that simple

What is this based on?

It is just your opinion

Most of what we import we can produce

Whether we need to export more or not must have some empirical basis

Exporting more is not a virtue no matter how emotionally right it sounds

What is need is data and analysis
What do we import and how much do we spend on that?

That is the starting point

Analysis not visceral reaction

Currently our top import is refined petroleum products 40%

In that regard we need to import less or nothing

My humble advice

Spend about 30 minutes to research this subject before commenting
It is not compulsory to talk about things you have no knowledge of

My friend uses 2007 corolla, so he gave in to idea to take his kids to school, park there & take N200 bike to work place. To save cost of N1,500

Unfortunately right I front of school gate where e parked, dem moved his BRAIN BOX for him corolla, purchased new one 110k, technician collected 15k + transport.
E save N1,500 to take large 130k, e wise or e dumb?
It happened at Ibadan?

Firstly my argument is based on the Theory of comparative advantage you can look it up

The theory in simple terms is you can't produce everything at the same efficiency, so focus on the things you can produce efficiently produce more than you need as much as you can... Because you are efficient you can sale them for a good profit and still be competitive

Then use the earnings to buy those things you can't produce efficiently

Being able to produce something is different, being able to produce something competitively is another thing

Your claim was not based on theory of comparative advantage
That is an afterthought
You just think we should export more without saying what we should export
If it was based on that theory then we should not be spending 40 %. of our import spending on refined petroleum products

The USA is the richest country in the world with the highest GDP

Yet since 1976 it has run a trade deficit

So having a trade surplus is not necessarily the endgame of a virtue

The key INTERNAL TRADE WITHIN NIGERIA

It is clear your understanding of the issues is limited

Nigeria does not have the industrial capacity to produce anything with significant value added and that cannot change overnight

What we can and should do is first stop importing regimes petroleum
Start producing things we consume thereby boosting internal trade e.g

How much internal trade is there in Nigeria between SE and SS or SE and WE

We. do need to IMPORT LESS
We need to encourage more DOMESTIC TRADE WITHIN NIGERIA

Firstly If you know here I have always preached theory of comparative advantage

Using has a trade deficit and can survive that's on the surface their biggest export is the dollar bill

My argument is Nigeria should stop focusing on what we import because if we can produce them cheaper locally we would already be doing it... Focuse on those things we can produce cheaper locally and export them

Local trade would not add to the economy of the country... Would only at best distribute wealth unless it's import substitution

Let me break this down

The economy is like a jar fill with water that has two holes... One for water to come in and one for water to go out

Volume of water is the economy, water inlet in export, water outlet is import

The only ways to grow an economy is to block leakage, increase the volume of water coming in our a combination of both

Nigeria is too underdeveloped to produce it's own fuel. They'll say it's too hard and costly to farment farm produce that contain starch, cellulose and glucose.

Too much talk

We need to produce more of what we consume in the immediate term
Yes we are not going to start production of cars overnight but we can produce petrol, food, furniture and clothes.

That should be our priority

I am aware of the fuel-ethanol mix.. it's referred to as E5 or E10 depending on the volume. NNPC was serious about the thing back then, dunno about now.

The thing with this technology is that it will make ethanol demand to rise and will cause demand for cassava, starch etc. used for ethanol production to rise too. This of course is dangerous for those consuming cassava and starch for food and likewise dangerous for those producing spirit drinks and other alcohol-based drinks from ethanol.

It's a tricky something if you don't have in-depth understanding of the whole thing. You can't be channeling ethanol for drinks and food crops like cassava into fuel blending without having a backup plan incase of food shortage.
Re: Blending Petrol With Ethanol Will Save N49 – Marketers by Jughead29: 9:00pm On Oct 21, 2023
During my project as a biochemist, i produced ethanol from cassava, a large cassava could only produce about 5ml ethanol.... So how do you think food scarcity will become if your idea is implemented??

mrvitalis:

Lol 😂😂😂 so why are people not producing ethanol that we import?

Nigerians are actually socialist at hearth

You can't produce cheaper than imported ethanol... Same reason we import petrol you can't refine cheaper than imported petrol

Because you don't have comparative advantage yet to do that you have to go back to

Seed development, fertilizer production and distribution, land for farming availability backed by law... Machine rental availability... Access to credit

It's a whole complex thing that would take 4 years minimum to fully implement

You APC guys know nothing really bloody socialists

You are shifting the goal post.

The issue is can Nigeria produce adequate ethanol for blending with petrol, if it becomes a DPR policy?

The answer is CAPITAL Yes.
It is not whether Nigeria is currently producing large quantities or if if local productions in Nigeria is currently cheaper than importation from Brazil or Cuba.

If there are enough incentives, including steady markets, Nigeria can produce adequate ethanol for the blending of petrol (depending on preferred percentages)

Every discussion need not revolve round APC Vs Obidients narratives.

I guess we're not on the same wavelength. If only you read. Let me explain better to you: biofuel is an alternative to fuel from crude oil, Brazil today makes use of biofuel. What is biofuel? Biofuel is a fuel that is produced from plant material. Ethanol is obtained from plant material(potatoes, maize, wood) that contain starch, cellulose and glucose. The kind of plant material Brazil use frequently is corn. The process of obtaining ethanol from plant material is fermentation in the absence of air, in the absence of oxygen fungi(yeast) appears on plant material and acts as enzymes. Ethanol is separated from the final mixture by fractional distillation. The process is very costly. But developed countries prefer it because the energy from that fuel is cleaner than fuel from crude oil. It is cleaner because the carbon from automobiles that uses the fuel doesn't go that far to the atmosphere, instead it goes back to the plants to produce more of themselves And very soon car manufacturers would stop producing carbon emitted cars to reduce the emission of carbon in the Atmosphere. The rate of carbon in air was formerly 0.03% but it is now 0.04%. which is very bad.

Your explanation is unnecessary

I did not talk to you about biofuel AT ALL
I spoke about your communication

If you talk to yourself you are not communicating so you need to improve your English

All the details about yeast and corn are totally irrelevant to the message on effective communication
The post I quoted was gibberish
That was the point

As far as biofuel is concerned don't assume you know more than anyone on Nairaland
That would be foolish and arrogant

Again you display your poor reading and comprehension by talking about something tangential to what I raised

So cellulose is what brought about your conclusion of gibberish, reading, comprehension and some other crap about me that I can't remember.
