How Come Nairaland Never Promote Nigeria Football League? by Nobody: 4:24pm On Oct 21, 2023
Every Saturday or Sunday, you will see on Nairaland Chelsea vs Liverpool today at 530pm. But I never seen any post today's Enyimba FC vs Kano Pillars FC on nairaland. How can Nigeria win the world cup or even reach the quarter finals when half of Nigerians do not even watch the local leagues on TV? Our league is not even that bad , we play football way better than many countries. We have some good footballers waiting to be discovered. we need to patronized our local league like we do for the premier league, our league will grow and much money will be generated.

Well at SA league generate money due to viewers plus South Africa is not good in football. They are better in Rubgy..Nigerians are better in football than South Africans. We have the talents and know if more Nigerian patronized the local league..more money, better resources for talented footballers to be discovered and so forth

Your title makes it seem if Nairaland starts placing NFPL matches on the FP, the league will get more viewers. That is not true. Years ago, NFPL matches were posted on the FP, yet viewership did not rise as you opine. The solution to the league gaining traction is to ban government ownership and privatise the league including viewership of matches. Introduce a regulating body which participating clubs will vote. In summary, structure it like the EPL. Most importantly, for more Nigerians to start watching the games live, security, constant electricity, and economic development MUST come first.

See, we cannot leapfrog basic infrastructural development. You sound so concerned, but this is how Nigeria has always been ab initio. Nothing is changing anytime soon. Better get used to it.

I was not aware but just because viewership did not increase does not mean nairaland should not promote NFPL matches online. Privatization will come and things will improve , there will be money to be made if Nigerians start watch local leagues like they watch Arsenal , Chelsea , Liverpool and so on.

If we build our economic development and infrastructure first, all those things will fall in place naturally. It won't work if you try to force it

Yet the premier league is making a lot of money from die-hard Nigerians football fans, and then we complain while our country is not moving forward.

the premier league did not get there by fluke. In the early 1990s EPL was irritating to watch, bad pitches( poto poto fields ) . Serie A , German league and la liga were kings. Fans in South Africa, arab world, asian countries watch epl and still go watch their own local leagues. Nigeria league is currently shit and people saw an easy alternative. Money controls the world not emotions or feelings. The government there created enabling environment to develop their leagues same way the Saudi league is doing.
The 9ja league is not even interesting too muscular old men that cant cross or shot playing gra gra football 😅🤣

Meaning that we should privatise the league and the clubs as we did in the telecoms sector over two decades ago.

Unfortunately, we are too stuck with wanting to get money without doing anything/much, which is why we vote balablu town hall empty pseudo progressive propagandists instead of capitalists. Worse is the communist labourers who want government ownership and control with subsidies for everything.

Currently, people watch the matches live in the stadiums, YET no money. The league has to be privatised for those at home to watch those matches and translate into money. That is the first solution to making the league profitable. Ban clubs which are partly or wholly owned by governments. Sell viewing rights on a competitive bidding process. What you want is not hard and has been replicated elsewhere - copy the EPL and tweak it to Nigerian taste. In the long term, security and economic development must follow in tandem. People don't start watching matches, or buying club paraphernalia out of thin air.

all these things require huge investments. Look at Saudi Arabia for instance, how much have they spent so far on their local league? Billions of dollars. Where will Nigeria get such money from? Even South Africa that hosted the world cup, not much improved in their overall football potential despite the massive amount they spent. North African leagues are doing much better than subsaharan African leagues due to their superior economic development because even if the government doesn't invest in sports, the people are already have interest in it and due to their improved economy and societal infrastructure, they can pay a huge amount of money for match tickets which in turn raises money for stuffs like awareness and paying better salaries to their home grown talent. How many Nigerians can pay #2000-4000 to watch a local match? Why will the Nigerian government spend billions of dollars on sports when the infrastructures are unfixed and the people are hungry? It makes no sense.

All I am saying if Nigerians show the same enthusiasm towards the local football clubs like they do for the big European clubs, money will come. Our league will be one of the top in the worlds. I will use Mexican league or Liga Mx for example, the Mexicans have corruption as bad as Nigerian and almost the same problem we have in Nigeria. Yet the league is one of the best because they are passionate about the local clubs. They wear their local team football jersey with pride. When there is money to be made, things go follow. Plus South Africa is not a proper football country, Nigeria is.
