ositadima1: Deadlytruth is correct, what you explained is possible with diffusion and does not require a membrane. It is the semipermeable membrane that makes osmosis possible and it will continue until equilibrium is reached in the concentration of the solution on both sides of the membrane 1 Like |

emmanuelewumi: Osmosis is a form of diffusion. Diffusion is like an umbrella under which osmosis falls as a specialized form. Osmosis is always from higher concentration to lower concentration. Like most processes in nature, things move from high energy states to lower energy states, or else you need external energy to go in the other direction. 1 Like |

If you drop water on your shirt or semen on your boxers (by mistake) , you will see it spreading outward. The opposite cannot happen in nature. |

ositadima1: You are bringing in Physics and law of gravity into it. That doesn't apply here. There is what is called osmotic pressure and it is the force which helps move water across the membrane. Osmosis is strictly about the movement of water molecules and not the movement of any other substance. In all instances of osmosis, there are two solutions separated by a semi-permeable membrane which permits only water to move across it. Now, when those two solutions of different concentrations are connected with that semi permeable membrane, osmotic pressure is immediately set up with the goal of equalizing the two different concentrations. This makes water molecules to start moving away from the hypotonic solution (i.e the side of lower concentration) through the membrane to go and dilute the hypertonic solution (i.e. the side of higher concentration) at the opposite end and in the end both solutions become isotonic (i.e. of equal concentrations) 5 Likes |

Deadlytruth: You mentioned osmotic pressure. I can tell you that you can't have pressure without a potential difference. You must have a high-potential side and a low-potential side, then pressure begins to push from high to low. The same principle applies in biology, physics, chemistry, and electricity. |

If you want to understand it practically, peel off the bark a pawpaw fruit and cut it into two. Take one half and fill it halfway with salty water, then place it in a bucket containing fresh water (i.e. water without salt), leave it there and go back to check after ten hours, you will observe that the level of water inside the pawpaw has increased.... meaning that water has flowed from the fresh water into the pawpaw because of the higher salt concentration inside the pawpaw at the beginning. 3 Likes |

ositadima1:In Physics, pressure is Force per unit area, but that doesn't apply in the concept of osmotic pressure. Just like saying someone is under work pressure in the office, and the usage of pressure here has nothing to do with a physical force being mounted on him. 1 Like |

Deadlytruth: My friend, it is like you are one of those people who spend time cramming for exams. I am not arguing that osmosis occurs through a semipermeable membrane or that it acts on water. I am correcting the mistake that you both made: whether osmosis or diffusion, it moves from a higher concentration region to a lower one. Please, if you cannot understand, let us drop the matter. I am tired. |

ositadima1: Remember also hygroscopic pressure. Apart from gravitational and momentum (motion) induced pressure (force/area) there are other causes of force (pressure i.e force/area) which may work against gravity or any other force as long as it is of a greater value. I can take the fundamental physics component of this BA Osmotic pressure may be related more with Chemistry and Biology and cannot comment on how it works at the moment. I am sure it will have some explanations using physics. There are so many forces in physics apart from gravitational. Strong Force, Weak Force etc. May need to go back to Engineering Physics to refresh 1 Like |

BabsO2: I've already made it clear that if you're going against gravity, you'll need an external force. For example, if you want to lift a rocket, you need fuel. At 200 meters, the potential energy is higher than at ground level. This same principle applies to osmosis: it has to move from higher concentration to lower concentration. However, unlike a rocket, osmosis is a spontaneous process that occurs naturally. If you want water to move from lower concentration to higher concentration across a membrane(like in the rocket example), you'll need to make it happen artificially. Seriously, their definition is wrong and would fail an exam. |

ositadima1: Will need to read up on osmosis to refresh its exact meaning as it is more under biology i guess. But looking at hygroscopic or capillary forces. They cause water to flow against gravity. They are due to net imbalances in other forces at the atomic level. And there are so many forces at the atomic level which physicists say are far greater in value than the gravitational one we see and can easily relate with. That's why a nuclear bomb is possible. Where massive amount of energy (force x distance) is released by a change from one atom to another under the right conditions that are possible. 1 Like |

ositadima1: Cat fish is found in fresh water habit, If you take catfish and put it in a lagoon the catfish will die. The concentration of the catfish body fluid is lower than that of the lagoon. Water will move out of the catfish cells into the environment that is the lagoon, this will cause plasmolysis of the catfish cell and the death of the animal. If you take a mackerel fish found in the ocean and put it into a fresh water habitat. The concentration of the fresh water habitat is lower than the concentration of the mackerel body fluid. Water will move from the environment ie the fresh water that has a lower concentration into the cells of the mackerel fish that has a higher concentration. The water movement into the animal will make its cells to become turgid, the cell membrane will burst leading to the death of the fish I was surprised you did not do that practical described by Deadlytruth in your Biology classes in high school 5 Likes 1 Share |

ggoldmine: My brother I would have given up on this, but I don't give when I am right. Below is a passage from a book, do with it what you like, iam done: Osmosis is a process by which solvent molecules move from an area of high solvet concentration to an area of low solvent concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. Semi-permeable membranes allow solvent molecules to pass through but not solute molecules. The rate of osmosis is proportional to the difference in solvent concentration between the two areas. A good example of osmosis is what happens when you put a fresh water fish in saltwater. The fish's body cells contain more water molecules than the saltwater outside of its body. Therefore, water molecules will move out of the fish's cells and into the saltwater by osmosis. This can cause the fish's cells to shrink and die. Osmosis is also an important process in plants. Plant roots absorb water from the soil by osmosis. The water molecules in the soil move into the plant's roots because the plant cells contain more solutes than the soil. This water helps to keep the plant's cells turgid, which gives the plant its structure. Osmosis is also an important process in the human body. For example, osmosis helps to regulate the blood volume. The blood contains more solutes than the cells in the body. Therefore, water molecules will move out of the cells and into the blood by osmosis. This helps to maintain the blood volume and prevents the cells from dehydrating. Osmosis is a fundamental process in biology. It plays an important role in many different organisms, including plants, animals, and humans. Here are some other examples of osmosis: * When you put a raisin in water, the raisin swells up as the water molecules move into the raisin by osmosis. * When you sweat, your body is trying to cool down by evaporating water molecules. The water molecules move out of your sweat glands by osmosis. * When you eat salty foods, you may feel thirsty. This is because the salt in the food increases the solute concentration in your blood. The water molecules in your cells will move into your blood by osmosis to try to balance the solute concentration. Osmosis is a simple but powerful process that plays an important role in many different areas of science. I hope this explanation was helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions. 1 Like |
