And the ones that buy the land and build houses will probably not live there. Maybe rent it out, give it to family, but they won't live there. 14 Likes 2 Shares |

There's no reason to buy land if you're still struggling abroad |

pansophist: Chaii The irony of life Just working for others to enjoy their sweat and to make it worse, the person can even die untimely like 45 hears old when he thought he would get to 60 years old to go back home and enjoy his/her sweat. Think about this also, what is there to enjoy in your 60s again when you have used the best part of your life 20 to 50 to hustle hard. Above 50s, you start avoiding sugary things, scared of old age diseases like HBP, stroke, diabetes etc What is there to enjoy again at that age sef when your skins are getting wrinkled, you don't look more handsome or appealing again, your movements are kind of sluggish because you don't have that youthful agility again? To me, it is just a rat race to nowhere. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

emmaodet: It’s a rat race to inter generational wealth that is used to oppress people who don’t work hard and smart enough to make more than they need, in order to save and invest. Is this what the oyinbos do individually and collectively to make their own societies better than ours 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Which Nigerians abroad are buying houses in Nigeria When i was in the UK (2005 to 2008) even Nigerians doing hustle jobs were building houses in Nigeria, many others were looking forward to retirement in Nigeria. Today most Nigerians in my generation are not interested in going home to retire or go build houses there. Na mortgage dem dey face o. Some on 2nd or 3rd houses for rental income/airbnb. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

ednut1: I am curious, people in your circle, do they intend to retire in the West (UK, US & Canada) instead of Nigeria or other African countries? |
Re: Nigerians Abroad Are Working Hard To Buy Land At Home...... by ednut1(m): 1:02pm On Nov 05, 2023 |
Gerrard59:mostly retire in the west. Some men still like the idea of retiring back in Nigeria so they can flex their foreign currency on (you know what), the women don’t even entertain such conversations 😆😆. https://www.npr.org/2023/01/26/1151803344/nigerians-who-left-their-country-planning-to-return-in-old-age-are-reconsidering 3 Likes 1 Share |

ednut1: From the article, it makes sense to retire to be close to family and friends. For men, I can understand. If Nigeria becomes so unsafe, other African countries dey. Plus, not all states are that unsafe in Nigeria to live. But really, I don't understand the economic point of building a house where one does not reside and income from rents isn't commensurate to monies invested. 1 Like |

emmaodet: That's the reality. Dont know if it's sad or not, but the Nigerian case is sad. This is typical of poor countries. And if the breadwinner falls, the whole family falls as well. This is unsustainable. Because if a country is doing fine, people will live for themselves. Parents will have pensions, or they can depend on the social payout from the states. Your income will go to push you to self-actualization, instead of responsibilities to others dragging you back. Only in Africa, a single breadwinner will be responsible for others Then the breadwinner will be a workhorse for other ones who most likely will not do the same for them if the role is reversed. The price one pays for coming from an underdeveloped country (also known as ´´black tax´´) is multidimensional. Poverty is really expensive. 11 Likes 5 Shares |

emmaodet: Sometimes I just observe the way animals live their life, and I see how they don't have many of the problems humans have. The only time animals will be taken care of is when they are still young, and need mama's breastmilk and protection. But as they grow older, mama chases them away, and it's over. Take a lion for example, if he didn't learn to hunt from his mum, he would die of hunger when he chased off to fend for himself. No such thing as depending on another lion, or being a burden. Actually, the biggest killer of animals is their inability to hunt themselves. It's purely survival of the fittest. To animals, this way of life is their default, but to humans, it is not. Until you are in a position of being a breadwinner to adults, especially those who are ingrates, you may never appreciate the animal's formula. Because one day, you will tell yourself the bitter truth, which is that a lot of these people you are helping aint seeds, but stone. They will need your help until you die, they die, or you stop giving. Like seeds, many will never on their own become independent and blossom. Instead, they will become more capitalistic (aka manipulatory), and strategize to milk you maximum. I call them stones. Pour water on a stone, bury it in the most fertile soil, and expose it to photosynthesis, it will still be eternally barren. There is no justification for a healthy adult to not be capable of taking care of themselves. No single excuse. 23 Likes 5 Shares |

Gerrard59: Yes. Even parents borning in the 60s 70s are returning to UK, US & Canada to retire after their children they took to raise in Nigeria are old enough to return to where they were born and barely visit Nigeria, and often wouldn't retire there. After all, why leave good healthcare for Nigeria healthcare, if nothing else. Children taken to Nigeria are even turning against their parents, "why did you take us to that place when you should have known it was hell", especially if they return to UK, US & Canada to find colleagues they left are often more settled in life. Their children, who barely visit Nigeria are definitely not retiring there. It's the education opportunities that tend to swing it. One learns more knowledge when it's not Nepa and schools are equipped with libraries, or rather, computers as they are these days. Most want the best for their own children and they know where it is provided. It's what pains me most about Nigeria. The fact that we have not yet learnt the implications of the garden. |

pansophist: It's not that easy. A lot of Nigerians especially abroad ones are carrying unavoidable burden. I met a beautiful lady weeks ago who was working 2 jobs not because the first job wouldn't be enough for her but she has to raise money to pay her younger brothers school fees so that he can stand a chance to get a study visa to come to Canada. I felt for her but what can she do? Fortunately for oyibo people, they have a system that largely works for them so they become responsible for themselves alone. Unfortunately for Nigerians, no working system so the burden lies on those who managed to have to rescue those who don't have. At the end of the day, both the have and have not live a miserable life 2 Likes 2 Shares |
