I believe Israel knew Hamas would strike on October 7 but did nothing about it. Though they may not know it would be that brutal. Israel's swift reaction and enormity of damage in Gaza is not something that was planned within a week. In short, Hamas played into Israel's hand.

Now thousands of Hamas terrorists are dead while others are dead men working. What is Hamas gaining from this war if not death and death? It is after this war that real occupation will start. It will be indefinite.

Let's look at the scenario from a simple angle and then solve

Let's assume Israel is a house under suppression from self appointed vigilante house in the street (Rome) in seventy ad the big house destroyed one of the houses it is suppressing (Israel) and proceeded to change it's name to (Palestine) house, then they encourage it's habitation by Arabian groups who trade in spoils of war, these new tenants had their jobs cutout for them, monitor the remnants of Israeli tenants that didn't flee to other lands and make sure they didn't raise their heads in future, these assignment was happily and effectively executed by the new tenants with gusto and unparalleled wickedness, and they succeeded for years, almost exterminating the old inhabitants, until things they didn't take into consideration developed.
1) The self appointed vigilante big house went extinct.
2) A new vigilante big house(America) who doesn't share in the formers enmity was born
3) The forgotten children of those that fled their house have decided to return home and save their kins, who were being exterminated by the new entrants/ tenants, inhabitants

History says these children succeeded in reestablishing their house, then the hunters became the hunted.
