Electricity workers have shut down the national grid following the declaration of an indefinite strike by organized labour unions.

Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for Transmission Company of Nigeria, confirmed this to DAILY POST exclusively on Tuesday.

According to her, electricity workers, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), followed directives of the Nigeria Labour Congress to withdraw their services around 11:20 am on Monday, leading to a nationwide blackout.

"Electricity workers are NLC members; they’ve followed the directive by organized labour to withdraw their services from Tuesday”, she stated.

DAILY POST gathered that the Federal Capital Territory and its environs are experiencing a blackout.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress announced a nationwide indefinite strike starting Tuesday despite a court order restraining the unions from doing so.

Reacting to the development, the Presidency, in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, said strike action by unions was a flagrant disobedience to court order and a lack of respect for the judiciary.

Accordingly, the government expressed displeasure that the nation’s economy and social activities should not suffer because of the personal interest of any labour leader.

DAILY POST reported that the unions last week issued a nationwide strike notice over an assault on Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC, on November 1 2023, in Imo State.

Yeah, because assault should not be punished.

If you were assaulted, would you let your assaulters go?

Omo, if first 6 months be like this, how 4 years go come dey??

On a second thought, nobody should be allowed to shut down electricity in a country. That's tantamount to economic terrorism. But because we are used to supplying our own electricity individually it won't mean anything to the govt. In a developed country, shutting down electricity is an act of war and the perpetrators would be treated as terrorists.

The Igbati slap they gave NLC president must really be painful ooo

The same NLC that would call for strike and reverse at the last minute but finally pushing ahead now is not serious as far as I am concerned

Government hiked fuel price by almost 600% pushing for an increase in transportation cost for commuters, food prices soared and companies are folding up because of these, yet these mumus would not push ahead for strike or call for strike only to call it off a few seconds later after alat don enter

Now thesame NLC wants to go on strike because their oga received slaps and Igbati olooyi

So, basically the strike is to serve and massage their ego, not for the causes of the masses

If una like, shut down light at the end of the tunnel, we go use hand fan when heat dey

Oshiomole did worst than this under OBJ and today’s critics of the NLC were those hailing him then.

Would Oshiomole be beaten as NLC president during his days and the the nation won’t be set ablazed?
