Jannyfranc: you're right. budget is a big consideration especially initially. keep in mind that you don't have to remain where you start out. you can always relocate based on work, preferences, etc weather and cost of living - houston and dallas (summers are hot but winters are relatively mild). running away from hurricane eliminates houston but there's the probability that you can live in houston for a few years and relocate without having a major hurricane. america is a violent country with lots of mentally unstable and volatile armed people (I have to be blunt here) so I don't have any recommendation on less violent city other than stay prayed up and be careful. houston is very diverse, not sure how that compares to north carolina but just something to keep in mind. good luck. 2 Likes 1 Share |

hustla: Una no sabi. I dey IT industry for Yankee. I no know which area of IT the guy dey but no area of IT wey no dey pay for here. If you focus on attaining higher level certifications in the area of IT you are currently in, it does 2 things for you. 1. you are likely to get higher paying jobs where you currently are 2. you have more opportunities and avenues to get a job in US If you just dey postulate say you want move to US and you dey into IT, you just dey waste person time |

hustla: There is a saying 'heaven helps those who help themselves'. U are already in the UK, u are already in the IT industry. U are not starting from zero. U need to have some initiative regarding ur goals. If the goal is just moving to US, then that is the goal and you can accomplish that. If the goal is to move to US to work in the IT industry, then the step to the goal that I know of is getting to a high level in your field to become desirable. Dem tell me to study hard when I dey school and become a doctor, I no hear word. Na kernels be advise when you no know the full circumstances 1 Like |

I know this is personal, but mind sharing reasons why you want to leave the UK for the US? This might also help guide your choice of state in the US to go to. Mind you one suggestion of state might not fit your bill in terms of chosen profession. babajeje123: |

bigtt76:Thanks dear. The UK has a lot of restrictions on whatever kind of visa you have. On skilled worker visa however can't do more than 20 hours on a second job. Then heard IT guys are more rewarded in the US than here. By the way, I'm in cyber. |

Quite insightful and I agree with you that there are restrictions on the skilled worker visa and on the remuneration too. Good thing you are in IT and specifically cyber, my suggestions here would be to carry out a research on the job roles (and its requirements) you are targeting in the US then work to close any knowledge gap you might have. You should also explore remote work with US companies first and from there you can conveniently start looking for a permanent move. Canada also have the work stream for the PR thingy you can also try that. Thanks for sharing. babajeje123: 2 Likes |

bigtt76:Canada is never in my plan and can't even be. May be for a visit but to reside, no way! My post here was to find out if the US has something similar to skilled worker visa that can be explored. Like you suggested, will do a little research and hopefully will get necessary information. Thank you sis. |

babajeje123: See this link https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states Click on the options there details of options are there Temporary (non immigrant) workers Permanent workers Since you're in the UK, I'd say target getting a job in a company that has operations in the US. That way if intracompany transfer (L1 visa category which falls under non immigrant temporary worker) is possible you can look to that. Note that getting L1 does not preclude you from becoming a permanent resident , after a few years if you meet the criteria you can adjust status in country . 2: people I know moved from the UK to the US via intracompany transfer and have adjusted status after a few years. 3 Likes 1 Share |

babajeje123: You could start with getting the CISSP and seeing if you could land a role with a US company that will complete the visa process for you. It could also be useful in the UK/EU 1 Like |

Can I enter the US through another port of entry other than the one mentioned in my application? I filled florida in my application but will be going to Boston instead. Will that be Any problem? |
Re: Living In The USA - Life Of An Immigrant Part 1 by Taal17: 9:02pm On Nov 17, 2023 |
Zimzee: There's a POE thread on nairaland For your question are you going to a different final destination than what you indicated on your form? Because port of entry is determined by your flight itinerary so unless it's a direct flight to your final destination then it's not the same as your POE. Border officials can ask you anything they want, they are the gatekeepers. So be prepared |
