Yorubas owned Lagos in and out and by conquest, a Yorubaman is the Oba of Benin.
There's a book called History of Yorubas by Rev Samuel Johnson. It's pdf is on Google as free download. It gave more account of how Oranyan a Yorubaman became the first king of Benin.
In fact, the influence of Yorubas on Benin were more.
And if we v any Benin boy here that want to flex muscle, come out. There's oil to rub on ya body sotey ya muscle go show well. But I will nuke you!

They Don't have anything..no war....no olden days warriors like Ogunmola, latoosa, lisabi etc..that is why they see OJUKWU as the next big thing after jollof rice. There notable history started from civil war.

Their society was so unstructured. They need to be very grateful to the British for coming to colonize them, who then went ahead to organize them into a tribe for the sake of effective administration.

We have hear of the Fula's Othman Dan Fodio.
The Bayajida from the Hausas'.
The Opobo King, Jaja of Opobo who was exiled cos he resisted the colonialist's agenda.
The Mais' of Bornu.
The Benin empire artifacts for us to know that they have a very rich heritage dating back many centuries.

I can go on and on with many other tribes in Nigeria that we have heard of their stories but never an ibo history. No wonder they killed themselves over Ojukwu matter. Peter Obi is also writing another chapter of their ignominious history for them.

princemillla:

There were settlers in Lagos (the aworis )before the Benin came waging war on them.

Saying they founded Lagos has long been debunked by scholars.

There is different between using military might to dethroned original settlers of a land and founding.

If u are honest, your list will show the one even Lagos Oba attested that Benin founded.
Besides, things do not work like that. Any family can start a population on any land. Just like Igbos are the one opening up some places in Ago Palace. But there are always powers lording it over those area, be it already settled or still virgin land.
After Oyo empires decline, Benin became the power in this region. It had a colony in Lagos, and installed a king there. There were ofcourse many other leaders and paternal heads of families, even king like the King of ilara and other numerous Baales. But the focal power of Lagos was on the Lagos island. And the power was with the King that the Benin imposed on the people of that area. They were Benins vassals and Colonies. Even the king in the main town of Epe was part of this royal house from Benin.
This is the fact of History.
Benin lord it over the Lagos island area known as Eko. And Ereko u mentioned is a modern falsehood. Eko is a Benin word. There are many other Eko in Benin today

It's funny how you think a tribe like the Yoruba people, who are renowned for their high level of intelligence, will ever lose track of their history ! We are always on top of our games.

Oh,you guys assumed that Yoruba people don't know their history because we've chosen to ignore you,one consequential Binis, all this while, right ? Trust me,if you really know who you're as a Bini man or woman, trust me, you'll hate your silly self ! Some of you are highly delusional, you claimed you founded Lagos,we presented verifiable facts to counter your claims, you claimed Aworis were Binis, the Aworis said their progenitor was a Yoruba man from Ile Ife;you kept on embarrassing your ogiso ancestors all over the internet ! Wetin dey even wori una ?! You think you can ever extend whatever influence you may have in Edo beyond the boundary of your tiny land in Edo state ?!
That we often ignore your excesses and gibberish you spew from time to time is because of the respect we Yoruba have for the Benin royal stool and that's because it belongs to us,one of our forefathers established the Eweka ruling dynasty which rules the city till today !

Take it or leave it, everything about Benin, from religion, art, culture, heritage, etc to the tittle, appellations and praise names of the Oba,is deeply rooted in Yoruba. Those are our signatures in Benin which you pained and insecure Binis can NEVER change ! Trust me,that man who sits,as your Oba in his palace, is a Yoruba man; that's your painful reality !

Now,counter the Op's claims with your own facts or remain dumber than you're already forever !

You are twisting issues here. The Oba of Lagos is talking about his ancestors who has links with Benin when Ashipa went there on exile or to seek for help in order to attack Olofin. Both Ashipa who's the father of Ado and Olofin are Yorubas from Awori clan. Also, the name Ado is Edo. It's what was used to recognize Ashipa's son cos he was born in Edo. In fact, what's the meaning of Ashipa in Benin or any Edo language? It's a Yoruba word for a titled chief. Ashipa chiefs aren't in Benin palace but in almost all Yoruba kings palace. Also, the influence of Yorubas on Benin is enormous. You guys should wallow ya pride.
I can agree with you that Yorubas of ancient times and Benins of ancient times may have come from same family or are just the same.
