^^^ Benin Ciy had multi-storeyed buildings as early as the 1500s, and so it shouldn't be a surprise that they had them in 1846, 51 years before the colonial invasion. The Benin Empire was a very sophisticated civilization. Do you know they exchanged ambassadors with Portugal in 1504? The Benin ambassador lived in Lisbon, Portugal in opulent settings, liaising with the Portuguese aristocracy and king, just like his Portuguese counterpart was doing in Benin. When his tenure ended, he was replaced by a new ambassador, just as we do today! I'm certain this happened with other nations Benin traded with, even in Africa, not just Portugal. They might even have sent ambassadors to Igboland and to the north. Even to the Ghana and Mali Empires, and the Kongo empire of central Africa, and possibly all the way south to the Zulus. The Benin empire prospered for a thousand years, until 1897 when the British finally overran it. 7 Likes 4 Shares |

Rossikk: Ambassador to iboland ? No make me laff ? Ambassador to iboland for what ? To communicate with which king or authority in iboland ? Iboland was an insignificant patch of clay filled with lawlessness and no civilization. Why Lisbon no exchange ambassador with iboland ? We are talking empires here and you mention your wasteland . 4 Likes 3 Shares |

nayolight: And what were your ancestors and people known for ? You that your people only became civilized to an extent due to borrowed European culture in 1945. British looted Bini of its artefacts . While Jewish merchants nearly harvested your people to extinction into slavery. Know when to shut up . When the European came they met the Oyo Empire, Bini Empire, proud kingdoms in the SS and a powerful Islamic theorocratic empire in the north and kingdoms in the middlebelt. There was nothing worth writing about your people other than the level of barbarity , savagery and cannibalism. We no be mate. 4 Likes 3 Shares |

DomPerignon: Prince Ohenhen, in 1510 during the reign of Oba Esigie. The Benin kings often sent their princes to obtain blessings from the Aro priests of Igboland. Those Aro priests were the 'prophets' of the Old Testament. They performed the exact same role that their ancestors, the Hebrew prophets, did. Going around and demanding audience with kings, to counsel on spirituality and the need for a humane approach to governance and our collective responsibility as humans, to the Almighty. They travelled all across West Africa and beyond doing this, and were well received, and held in high esteem by all the kingdoms and empires around them, for their deep spirituality. 11 Likes 1 Share |

Benin empire was built by the Yorubas. In fact, they are our cousins. Many of them bear Yoruba names, they even use Oba of Benin. |

DomPerignon: Igbos dont like Empires and they dont do kings, they were always Confederate people. We cannot all be the same What were k8ngs and empires? Just another system of control and subjugation. Empires are evil, empire simply means that some people left their land to seize the land of others, often through war. There is nothing good about that Even Nigeria that was once part of the British empire, now celebrates its independence every October Bini empire, Oyo empire, Sokoto empire, Kanuri empire, all them were evil. All of them were about killing people and taking over their lands so as to subjugate them 5 Likes |

DomPerignon:hmm. The same colonial rule that destroyed our culture, stole our education, turned a few to slaves and later gives birth to the rotten autocracy we practice. The scramble for Africa was not to spread "development, education or even religon" it was for resource aquisition, they came to TAKE. They ruled out Africa as empty, dark, backward, savage primal lands without history just to justify the sins they where about to commit. If a colonist had something good to say about an African state, it was because the region allowed her to steal easily. such a state was betrayed by its own people(their elites) (FACT: colonial rule concentrated power in Nigeria to one region through the almagamation. Not granting the equality you. claim) |

Zooposki:That guy dey find trouble. No mind am. What he tried saying was that it was during the time of Oba Eweka 1,that Benin Empire started. Binis were using Ogiso until Eweka who had affiliation with Ife became king. Benin Empire was the most famous Empire because it came into contact with the Portuguese before any other and it was written about. Oyo Empire started around 1300 CE. 1 Like |

The amount of saliva you have wasted over Igbos and igboland would have been enough to irrigate the farms of your masters in Arewa land. Maybe you should face your current predicament instead of the imaginary past of igboland that you're obsessed with. DomPerignon: 1 Like |

nayolight: The British were the most powerful military in the world in 1897 when they invaded Benin. They invaded everywhere they wanted, including India and China. Being military weaker than an invader doesn't mean you are not civilised. You're just militarily weaker. By the way the British burned down Benin city and bombed it to smithereens, and there are only one or two houses existing there today that were there before the invasion, and they are tourist sites today. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Rossikk: Somehow, they want to believe we were nothing before they came to "save" us. I don't want to say much but when the time comes, our ancestors will get the respect they deserve; instead of being portrayed negatively. I keep saying that these ancient guys were far better than us but idiots attack me saying "look, they didn't make phones, and blablabla". Funny thing is there were no such technology when Europeans first met these empires. If the Benin empire got the same opportunity Imperial Japan had, our history would have been changed forever! I was shocked that these ancient guys had ambassadors and had good relationships with Europe... 1 Like |
