while this is a great concern, I hope we realize this issue is not unique to Nigeria alone ?
Developed countries are facing shortages as well and lots are shutting down

You see, the mess we currently are in is caused by no other person but ourselves. When you don't do the right thing. When you don't distribute wealth equally, this sort of thing will happen. Everyone is looking for new greener pastures and they are getting us overseas. If you see the number of Nigerian nurses who have emigrated to the UK alone in the past one year, you'd be shocked. Everyone wants to leave the country. Like this has become a national embarrassment. How many citizens of other so called African countries do you see running away from their country the way that we do? Meanwhile Nigeria is far better than these countries oh, but you see greed, corruption, selfishness is what is killing us in Nigeria. I keep saying it, until each and every Nigerian changes that mindset of "what's in it for me" or "me and my family alone, I don't give two flying fishes about the next door neighbour", Nigeria will NEVER move forward.

Nothing new, people migrate on daily , The population of Nigerians exiting the country annually is not up to 5 million. There just seem to be overhyped talk about the whole process.

APOLOGIES FOR THE SCATTERED BRAIN WRITE-UP (THE THOUGHT PROCESS IS LIKE A WAVE)

The central government will be doing the major lifting for any of the suggestions below to work
I. The moment Government see health care as a business in itself, and the revenue that can be generated , they will wake up or private sector will slowly encroach and eat the big pie .

II. Health insurance companies for massive enrollment of the populace. penetration of the informal sector will be key to it's success because that is where majority of the population function.

III. Major challenge for government and private institution will be funding and how to recoup their respective funding when they massively invest. Because we know

IV. logistics and funding may be challenging with this idea: Government can create institutions strategically in each state for Residency programs in all states. Federal medical centers in the country can be the residency / fellowship hub to cater to at least 5000 residents / fellow for starters ( that is a huge payroll the Federal Government will have to face considering most states are useless when it comes to footing bills)

V. upon completion of residency, access to private practice loan for continuity is the way, else all the above na banza.

If your sister or daughter starts having reoccurring malaria, omoh na to send am go find her pot of life in a hurry! Wetin concern agbero with overload, French doctors are not migrating anywhere anytime soon! cheesy

What many don't realize is that doctors don't actually want to leave. Even as bad as things are, if the entry level payment of a doctor is as little as 500k, you'll find more people willing to stay.

They know they have to manage but its worth making the sacrifice to take care of their people. All those that are leaving, do they not know that their fathers and mothers are left behind? They would rather stay but there is no longer a reason to do so.

The system has collapsed, period. We will learn that the hard way. We are learning it the hard way. Teachers to follow

Dishing out lies and propaganda to sugar-coat a precarious situation just to make a bad government feel good is bad for the nation. Always do it with some degree of sense and decorum.

I’m not sure freestuffng will respond to this. He is paid to defend apc without his brain. Once you expose his lie he just shuts up.

Nigeria's own is bad, really....but you are right.

The reason why Nigerians are moving to UK and Canada in large numbers is partly because both countries have shortages of people willing to go into medicine. Covid only made matters worse..especially with regards to nursing. Even countries like South Korea have medical shortages in certain fields self. The US has been shouting that they would soon have a net deficit of doctors. And so forth.

Many of these developed countries use developing countries to fill their shortages.

UK is talking of a plan to train more doctors and nurses from the native population though (I think they have even established three new medical faculties to train docs in last seven years self.).

Even then, government should do more to stop the exodus via incentives. (ie better salaries and terms of service)...because, even if all our doctors stayed at home, Nigeria still has a massive shortfall of doctors. Same for nurses. Shortage is even more acute when you go to the rural areas.

The only category of people with the capacity not japa_ing from Nigeria presently are politicians but their families are part of bandwagon.
Re: More Teaching Hospitals Risk Shutdown Over Exodus Of Medical Professionals by nihinlade(m): 8:47am On Dec 02, 2023
Big Lie, they did not shutdown because of Staff relocation abroad but because the federal government is not willing to employ more staff. The relocation even helps reduce how much the government pays in salary so they are okay with it. There are still thousands of Nurses and doctors who are still unemployed and would jump at the opportunity if vacancy advert is put out now!

There are many doctors looking for residency in Nigeria. Perhaps, now those without connection can get a place for residency.

That said, so that every doctor doesn't become consultant and run away, it is time to look into the earnings of doctor and try to make it favorable such that it is fair enough to make them stay. This applies to every other sector.

There's really nothing much can be done again to stop the japa syndrome currently going on.

Most Nigerians have lost faith in the system.

Increase in salary isn't even the solution.

Selfless leadership is.

Until then, Nigerians would continue to Japa.

No. But I know people who have and it was difficult getting to see a doctor because of the massive crowd and few doctors on ground.

Private hospital nko? Overpriced and understaffed. One doctor will be doing the work of anaesthesiologist, surgeon, cardiologist, nephrologist, gynaecologist, consultant etc. na even big risk sef to go private even with the VIP treatment as you won't be able to figure out the specific specialization of the doctor on duty.

How do you expect professionals to stay when the environment is not comfortable. Very stupid set of politicians.. they destroyed the system and expect innocent citizens not to go to better environments.

The guy is a fool.
Stop engaging with idiotic morons like him.

These are the same set of people that will see black and call it white, are they the ones that should be taken seriously?

We warned them a year ago, but they said our mouth is smelling, when you go to the Filling stations, do they ask if you voted for APC, LP, PDP OR NNPP? NO, they don't ask. Nigerians will never learn, and if you don't learn, how do you want to be better?

Nigerians keep doing the Same thing and hoping for a different result. Rubbish!
