Eko ROW!: Benin people ‘owned’ Lagos, Awori paid royalties to them—Erelu Abiola Dosunmu When the author of Usefulness of Useless Knowledge, Donald Jordan, said “history is an aggregate of half-truths, semi-truths, fables, myths, rumours, prejudices, personal narratives, gossip and official prevarications,” he may have been frustrated by the historical contradictions of his time. And such inconsistencies have been the fate of history from time immemorial, making Karl Marx to observe that it first repeats itself as a tragedy, and later as farce. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/12/eko-row-benin-people-owned-lagos-awori-paid-royalties-to-them-erelu-abiola-dosunmu/?s=09 48 Likes 9 Shares

I must read it all. We die here. Here are the points I'm coming up with: 1. I blame the Nigerian media for continuing to reinforce the fake relevance of low lives like Asari Dokubo. When he was running his mouth on this issue where he lacks authority, I was disappointed that his hackneyed views were reported by some national newspapers. Now, watch as his overbloated arrogance will not let him apologize for insulting the Oba of Benin so callously even after hearing from someone with a stronger authority on the matter. 2. There is evidence that an expedition was sent from Benin, there is evidence that they were conquered because there was an obaship in place. Even if they did not have anything and just sent an expedition to conquer, when someone conquers, he takes over the land and property of the conquered territory. There is nothing stringent but there are still some courtesies that are exchanged between the two kingdoms. And if a new king is being crowned in Benin, the Oba of Lagos will have a vantage position as a son of the soil within the context of the ceremony. Apart from that, everybody is independent in his own right but we enjoy a lot of goodwill. Whatever is between us now is ceremonial and more of courtesies. At first, this woman appeared to say that the Bini people lost their authority over Eko through a conquest sustained. Again, she seems to talk as if there is an ancestral connection between the present day indigenous Lagosians and Bini people. 3. Whatever be the case, let's be more forward-looking than backward-looking. Let's prioritize the future over the past. Let's find ways to build cities a thousand times better than Lagos instead of arguing about who owned Lagos. After all, even if the Binis were the first to settle there, they neither created nor purchased the land. 43 Likes 1 Share |

![]() That is why I am saying that there is no ambiguity in the history of Lagos if we are going to tell the truth. All these people, who have been talking, never mentioned that they paid Isakole but we all know that. It is written in books that they paid Isakole. That was the main reason the Benin came and took Olofin away. He refused to be subservient to them. The Benin came here because it is their territory. Hehe....but like she said. Everything is just ceremonial and courtesies now. Oba gha to kpere. Isee. Oba n'ogidigan! 58 Likes 8 Shares |

Supremos: She herself not a bonafide Lagosian. U can't distort our history or rewrite it for us. The dosumus aren't aboriginals of Lagos. The Dosumus aren't even Awori their forefathers are Benins reason she's trying to steal Lagos for her linage but we refused to accept this as our history is clear and in sooner time we must make available to the general public of our origin to Lagos and the Benins are obviously delusional 42 Likes 9 Shares |

Ipob/Igbos/biafran fabricated story sponsored on vanguard. Is it today fabrications and lies are reported and sponsored on daily papers? Tommorow now if you investigate further, it will end up being debunked. Is it because omokiri has proved beyond reasonable doubt that yorubas brought out Igbos from jungle to civilization in almost every aspect of humanity like education, religion, language development etc.? Even oba of Benin that said it has forgotten about the issues, but some enbittered igbos kept on sponsoring fake articles in their usual known antics. Why not allow this matter to rest since it is too late to reverse the history to make Benin or Igbos to rule Lagos? So Igbos should let the matter rest because they carry the matter on their heads even more than the oba that said it 23 Likes 5 Shares |

😊 Even though I'm a mix (Benin mother, Lagos/Yoruba Father)... Hope you guys understand that Benin was an expansionist Empire like Oyo Empire, British Empire before...and they (Benin) were once in charge of Lagos by Conquest...that doesn't mean they own Lagos alright! Lagos was/is a Yoruba land! 36 Likes 4 Shares |

The Bini couldn't make Mahin their port, they couldn't make Ijebu waterside their port, they couldn't make Gele Gele their port, They couldn't make Ibeju their port. It's a far way land in a tiny land in Lagos island they made their port. Lol Today the Bini decendants don't have land in Lagos island, it's the idejo Chiefs like Oniru, Ikate and Onikoyi chiefs that has 90% of land in Lagos island/ Eti. Osa. 25 Likes 4 Shares |

For avoidance of doubt Please check the map properly, one will see that when coming from Bini through the sea one will have to pass through Epe and Ibeju before getting to Lagos island and Eti-osa. There is not a single land in Eti-osa that belongs to any Bini decendants. So how on earth can you be the finding fathers of a place and those that came to meet you on your land now have more land than you? How come you also speak their language not the other way round. History has it that people who journed into a strange land often assimilate the language of their host, except the people coming in are the conquerors So why is Lagos an exception. Apapa the was under the control of the Oyo empire oh. See link below https://wappp.org/our_publications/nigeria-the-apapa-gridlock-challenges-and-solution/ 20 Likes 3 Shares

Why is so difficult for Yorubas who migrated to Lagos from Oshogbo and Iragbiji to accept a basic fact of history on who founded Lagos before the treaty of Lagos was signed by the colonialists. The original royalty in Lagos have corroboration what the Oba said na Kazeem for Mushin under bridge dey make noise upandan thinking that Igbos want to claim Lagos 71 Likes 11 Shares |

Supremos:All these stories are trash. Nobody has denied Aworis were from Ife but the question is, when the Benin migrant came, were the natives not there?. I ask again, How did Yorubas chase benins away from Lagos?, why is Yoruba language and culture predominant in Lagos?, why are the Yoruba the land owners in Lagos?, why are they the ones selling land in Lagos?, How many benin have a family house in Lagos?. These are my questions i want benin people to answer, otherwise, everything na empty noise. i am looking for the historical account of how Yoruba chased Benin out of Lagos, pls, anyone with the document shotld send me a link. 31 Likes 5 Shares |

I really don't understand the hullabaloo about who or what founded Lagos. The part of Lagos that the Bini are claiming was an independent colony under the colonial masters. I totally believe the Bini empire didn't create the place called Lagos island, but they introduced order and created the administrative structure used in runing the city,it was also used as the port for shipping out slaves found in the hinterland. It's the same comparison when history tell us Mango park found some rivers in Africa. The mainland part of Lagos wasn't part of Lagos until the state was created in 1967. A Lagos indigene from Isale-eko should be proud of his hereditary linkage to the great Benin Empire and its Obas. Have you ever wondered in all the stories of the great Yoruba god, there's not one single story that traces any of his descendants to the place called Lagos island. I believe the story of an astute historian like Erelu Dosummu should settle this issue about Lagos. The Lagos the Oba was talking about is what's called Lagos Island and not the one created by the migration of Ijebus and Aworis. God bless Nigeria 14 Likes |

I personally see Binis and Yorubas as one and same people. The current generation likes to argue and fight over everything and the elders are not intervening to educate and guide. There was a lot of interaction and connection between Binis and Yorubas before the advent of the Europeans and this is not limited to Lagos alone. Ancient Lagos is not the entire Lagos State. The modern Lagos is an amalgam of towns with their own different histories and traditional institutions. Also, the particular part of Lagos with "Bini History" is very well known. Ask the elders. There should be no controversy 20 Likes 2 Shares |
