Why Do Nigeria Pastors Cherry Pick Parts Of The Bible To Use In The Church? by dalitigator(m): 7:29am On Dec 17, 2023
Why do pastors cherry-pick parts of the bible to use in their church sermons, especially from the Old Testament?

This was one question that arose between me and a Sunday school teacher who was desperately trying to get me born again for the umpteenth time.

While I was wondering if I actually wanted to do this born-again thing and not just stick to my born-against life wen I dey jejely enjoin, I could not help but ask him why pastor cherry pick parts of the bible to apply in their Sunday teachings, especially from the old testament.

He was quick to answer that the new covenant was now applicable as it eroded parts of the Old Testament that were strictly applicable to the Jews and not the Gentiles. But then, he could not address why some pastors will use parts of the Bible book of Deuteronomy, Genesis and Leviticus, especially Malachi (the tithe part), to address church members while cleverly leaving out those parts that will cause serious confusion in the church.

Na there e for give up and promising to come back today to continue with his desperate effort to convert me into the Jehovah's Witness fold. I do like his effort, zeal and tenacity, and I will be cooking rice and chicken stew to entertain him today. After all, one must be ready to welcome the preacherman with his whole heart, especially those who allow you to ask questions and not think you are rude for asking some difficult question.

But why do Pastors cherry-pick parts of the Bible to apply?

Please educate my ignorance.

Thanks.

I have asked the same questions to most brothers but couldn't find answer to it..
If all the old testament law was condemned by Jesus and replace by the new law but why did they pick some verses that suite what they are saying after condemning it.
I find it absurd

They do so to emotionally blackmailed and manipulate gullible religious fools into leaving their finances in the church purse or account.
They are very materialistic and love prosperity above God,so they cherry pick portions of the Bible. They preach the message of prosperity to religious fools and tell them what love to hear pertaining to miracles and breakthrough.
Most Nigerian pastors avoid the Book of Revelations in the Bible, like a plague.
Lol!!! They never near that Book at all, because their deeds are so filthy.
On the Last Day, there's going to be a big surprise.
You won't find the names of these big private jet cruising pastors in the Book of Life, and you will find the names of Politicians like El Rufai,Chimaroke Nnamani,Nyesom Wike there.

They are all conmen, frauds. They are the very false teachers and false prophets that Jesus Christ warned would come and deceive people with lies using his name. For this reason Christianity alone has over 45000 denominations/cults all claiming to speak the one Truth of God when in fact what they profess are rather 45000 different lies and counting. undecided

Everything you know about Jesus is from Christianity, so if the people that created the religion are frauds, it says alot about the Jesus who Christianity is centered on.

All the books you know of Jesus and how he was potrayed was complied by this fraudsters, there are other books that didn't make it to the Canon, and they potrayed your Jesus Christ in another way, an example is Gospel of Judas, which was used extensively in early Christianity, those people you call fraudsters excludes the book, another one is apocalypse of peter which showed that your Jesus Christ is dead and gone, those same fraudsters also removed it.
What about the virgin birth 😂, how come you believe all these stories from conmen?

You are a fraud like them too.

There are three types of Law in the old testament: The moral law, the civil law and the ceremonial law.

The civil laws were the autocratic laws given by Israel as a nation. Just like we have the government in Nigeria in which we are to live by their laws, hence we can't live by those laws because in some cases it will be a crime here. E.g if a lady lies to a man she is a virgin and in the marriage bed, it was found she was not but lied, she is to be stoned to death. Try it here in Nigeria and see if them no go carry you go kirikiri.

The ceremonial laws were laws that had to do with ceremonial cleansing in accordance with the temple of God, as means to be purified and set apart as nation belonging to God. We are not under those laws because even though they point to Christ who was to come and save his people from sin, doing most of the them now is sinful because Christ has come to fulfill it and we don't do some ritual cleansing to show that we are purified and offer animal sacrifices as burnt offerings.

The moral laws are laws that people of God should obey throughout time on earth both Jews and Gentiles as they proclaim how Christian's ought to live their lives as a means of serving him to bring glory to His name, and they include all manner of sexual commonalities, liars, thieves etc.

For pastors to cherry-pick certain verses in the old testament especially when it concerns the nation of Israel and how they could be applied to us gentiles needs careful study and should be compared with how the new testament church relates with the old testament laws. And sadly many pastors fail in those areas.

First, Jesus Christ never condemned the Old Law given that He lived in submission and obedience to the Old Law Himself. And Jesus Christ will rule over Israel when He returns by way of the same Old Law. There is nothing wrong with the Old Law. undecided

Second, the cherry-picking is done by all of them out of complete ignorance of the Truth of God. By picking only those portions of Scripture that suit the particular narrative/interpretation they have chosen to adopt for themselves, they build for themselves and others willing to listen to them the delusion of their own liking. With more than 47000 such narratives out there, the number continues to grow , away from the Truth as stated right there in Scripture. undecided

Jesus condemned the old law, he came for mercy, if you live by the old law you'll be punished by it, that's why Jesus didn't tell them to stone the harlot.

Jesus Christ knew very well that it was a sin against God of Israel to add, remove or make changes to His Law.
1 “Now, Israel, listen to the laws and to the commands that I teach you. Obey them and you will live. Then you can go in and take the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.
2 You must not add to what I command you. And you must not take anything away. You must obey the commands of the Lord your God that I have given you. - Deuteronomy 4 vs 1 - 2
Condemning the Law would equally amount to setting oneself against the God of Israel and Jesus Christ never once did that either. undecided
17 “Don’t think that I have come to destroy the Law of Moses or the teaching of the prophets. I have come not to destroy their teachings but to give full meaning to them.
18 I assure you that nothing will disappear from the law until heaven and earth are gone. The law will not lose even the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter until it has all been done.
19 “A person should obey every command in the law, even one that does not seem important. Whoever refuses to obey any command and teaches others not to obey it will be the least important in God’s kingdom. But whoever obeys the law and teaches others to obey it will be great in God’s kingdom.
20 I tell you that you must do better than the teachers of the law and the Pharisees. If you are not more pleasing to God than they are, you will never enter God’s kingdom. - Matthew 5 vs 17 - 20
So, anyone who pretends it is OK to cherry-pick as far as any of God's Laws is a false teacher and a false prophet — antiChrist. undecided

God's word is for all honest hearted and sincere individuals so instead of waiting for someone to go and learn them come to teach you why not avail yourself to study the Bible for yourself so that you can know God's will for yourself?

You should visit the crime section daily for the many many atrocities committed by your pastors even against children. The JW organization is in no way unique as a religious cult given that the same problems that exist within it exists in most all of the other religious organizations and groups out there. undecided
