Dear Ebube,
It a good thing you want to start a business, but it obvious you barely have knowledge of this business.

The business has been in existence since BC and would continue be because people cannot do without food, irrespective of the economic conditions people must eat.

There are 2 branches of food business I am aware of
1. Raw food business (selling grains, rice, garti, beans, crayfish, egusi, frozen food etc)
2. Cooked food e.g Mama put or Buka as it called in local parlance

Which ever you decide, look for a mentor who's in the business in your current location, learn as much as you can before venturing into your own food business. It must not be Lagos, food business sell every where and any where.

All the best.
See how sensible, mature, and professional you sound.
Only if Nairaland is populated with people like you.

Hi guys my name is Ebube I finished secondary school 7year ago ever since then I have been working and saving money so I can be able to start up a business of my own currently I stay in kogi all my life but I'm from Ebonyi state .

So recently my uncle sold the family land and gave me part so currently is have some reasonable naira and I plan to leave for Lagos soon but I have little issues on how to go about. So I have nobody to help or lead me in Lagos I'm just going there on my own to start a business so my question.

1.How do I go about it ?
2. I plan on selling foodstuff ?
3. Which area and market will be conducive for
me to start this business.

Please I really need your advice . Your opinion matters alot
Firstly, you need an accomodation. Once this is settled, you are welcome to Lagos, the land of opportunities, a place where the son of a nobody can become a multi billionaire and eradicate poverty in their entire generation.

I remember that man who hails from Ebonyi state. He relocated to Lagos in the 80s. When he arrived here, he knew nobody. He was sleeping under the bridge (please don't try this cos Nigeria of the 80s isn't the same country today). He was always going to a particular gala distributor at Ojota to collect gala and sell in traffic. Gradually, he was selling and collecting more and the UAC distributor now gave him credit option. He'd collect gala on credit, sell and remit later in the day. He became noticed and the one who always helped the distributor meet his target. This ebonyi boy later employed some boys and sent them out to major locations to sell gala.

In a nut shell, he walked into UAC one day on invitation of one of the managers who noticed him. Each time this manager visited, he'd meet the boy coordinating activities at the distributor's office, as if he was an employee there. So, he was asked to apply for distributorship. He said he had not much capital but UAC helped the poor boy.

Today, he's a multi billionaire and a major UAC distributor. He owns up to 5 houses in ojota alone. I don't want to mention his name here but he was one of those who assisted Umahi's predecessor in his first term to become governor by co-sponsoring his campaigns. The UAC's manager had a junior staff by the name Mrs Shangokoya. She should be retired now. Her colleague was the one who narrated this story. I know the Shangokoya in person as well.

Good luck to you. Foodstuffs business is a lucrative one in Lagos. You only need to visit mile 12 and ile-epo Foodstuffs markets and establish relationships with those mallam. Just he sincere and you'd enjoy them. Do price survey too so you don't undersell.

Come to Lagos.

No fear.

A lot of your brothers are here, especially in Ikorodu. And they are making it.

Save the money in a deposit account, come to Ikorodu or go to Sagamu, learn food stuff business or phone accessories for three months.

Find a shop in a good location, if possible near Yoruba Abule (village). Set up your business and cash out.

Repatriate the money home and establish another business in Abakiliki.

Once you start making money, Yoruba ladies will start flockin around you. Avoid them. They are destroyers.

When you are ready to marry, head back to the East and marry a hard working lady.

Ebonyi ladies are hardworking so finding one won't be much of a problem.

Don't build a house in Yoruba land, if you must build, make ensure its within an areas Yoruba are living so that if the government decides to demolish the properties, it won't be only ours.

I entered Lagos with less than #5000 after paying for a night bus from Owerri.

Today, a lot of these Nairaland ronu terrorists can't lace my shoe.

Lagos is God's compensation to Ndi Igbo for the atrocities Yoruba ancestors did to Ndi Igbo during the war.

So come to Lagos.

Pursue, overtake, and recover without fail.

If you want to succeed in Lagos, don't join Yorubas and be doing cultism. Also, be careful. They can owe for Africa.

Come to Onitsha and do the business,Lagos is over hyped. We have markets and the population here in Onitsha to give you bumper sale. Lagos will frustrate you with endless demolition of markets and tribalistic discrimination. In case you later decided to go to Lagos, never you invest one Kobo there. Don't ever buy land there even if they are selling it five naira. Do your business and think home. If you want to come to Onitsha,I will assist you without collecting Kobo from you.

Good job!

You see, this one now about to fulfil one of his life ambitions which is to run down to Lagos...

Ebube or whatever you call yourself, my first advice to you is to stay back and develop your Ebonyi state.
However, if you still remain adamant to come, you are free to do so but on some conditions:
1. Do not commit crime in Lagos
2. Do not constitute nuisance in Lagos
3. Respect your host state and tribe
4. Don't ever have that mindset or join them to say your people developed Lagos or that Lagos is a no-man's land
5. Pay your tax

You see, once you meet these 5 conditions, you will prosper and reap the fruits of your labour...

Lagos welcomes all

I already said foodstuff business

With only 2 million, you'd be taking a huge risk going to Lagos. Go back to the South-East and invest in agriculture there. You're from Ebonyi State; that's a perfect place to start.

Don't go to Lagos.

Ignore the hype.

You can go much later if you wish; that's after you've established yourself.

Stay in the east. It's much better for you in terms of growing quickly in business.

Pick any eastern town, maybe Onitsha or Aba or Enugu or Owerri, just anywhere, go to Ebonyi and source for food items. Rice, cassava products, potato etc, then buy small small first and start reselling in these cities, when you master the business, you can start reselling in bulk.

Again, don't goto Lagos. Stay in the east first.

You don't need any of those. Here is my advise which won't cost you much.

Forget about going to Lagos. Stay where you are if it would help you keep expense at the barest minimum. If you are not computer literate then go and register and learn all the basics, this won't cost you more than 20k.

Afterwards, go and learn a digital skill then get a laptop and venture into freelancing.

All your expenses won't be more than 300-400K.

DON'T MOVE ANYWHERE WITHOUT A SOLID ROADMAP.
I want learn digital skills Ooo..

No, I don't think that. I just think that your money could be better served in the East. Ebonyi State, where you're from, is great for agriculture and you said that you want to enter the food sector. With only 2 million, it just makes more sense to scope some farming land in Ebonyi, buy it and start your business from there.

Hi Estan,

This is the business I do. Right now, I had to be on the business on-part time basis cos I got an offer for something else. So my boys runs the biz while I supervise. Currently, I have a shop I want to hand over to anyone already in the business. It has all the stuffs you need for the business, and have been used for the same biz for some years now. I'm only giving it out cos I cant run multiple shops now coupled with what am doing already.

But this is what you must know or my brotherly advise: You will spend at least a month or two to learn some things about the business while doing it. I mean you will act as a boy-boy with your own money. If you're serious with it, a month should be okay. You have to keep your money aside, humble yourself and get what you want( you need to learn how to measure, how to approach customers, how to buy goods, all the contacts of where to buy the goods cheaper etc).

At this starting stage, you must cut down your expenses. If need be, my guy the shop na where you go sleep o especially for shops in the street untill you level up. Ask any "omo ibo" as they are fondly called in Lagos. There are so many things I can't tell you here, but I'm willing to help you hoping your are a good guy and hustler. The journey no go easy o, but it will pay off at the end.

Let me also tell you that foodstuffs has gone up. So, you must have at least 400-500k(rent inclusive) for this journey. It depends on the scale u want to start. A bag of rice(small grain) now is around 53k, stone free nig rice is about 47k, a bag of oloyin is around 45k, bag of yellow garri about 20k and white na 26k etc....let me not talk too much, just send me DM if you are interested. Again, Feel free to ask me anything even if you're not interested, am willing to share my expertise with you free of charge.

And of course before I help you, I must ask you serious questions cos 9ja no good again, but I believe there are still some good guys & honest hustlers out there.

I'd advise you buy a Keke and start driving there in Kogi or move to Ebonyi, buy a Keke and drive. That's the best thing I'll say to you. But if you don't mind to come to Abuja, there are local markets around you can sell foodstuffs. I can accommodate you but not for long. Rent here around dutse is 150k you can get 200k for self con then establish yourself. I won't help you with feeding apart from the accommodation. If that is OK by you, buzz me if not I'll advise you to get a Keke and drive

Oga, you are an Igbo man. The Igbos have the best apprentice system in the world, or let me not exaggerate, in Africa.

Look for someone who does what you want to do, spend 2 years learning under someone who has experience.don’t mention that you have money to start up.

After you have built experience then you can invest this scarce resource you have.

How much can you pay in one year for house rent in Lagos? Minus that from your 2 million. Now, try and budget the rest of your expenses for that year. How much of that 2 million will be left over?

What's the competition like in your sector? Have you got any contacts? How likely are you to be scammed? Have you got a fall back plan in case that happens?

We need more people to invest in agriculture in the South-East, especially in Ebonyi State.
