Opinions Needed: My Mechanic Said I Should Use Only Water First In New Radiator. by Jjokke: 5:51am On Dec 22, 2023 |
I bought a brand new radiator for my Lexus RX330. I told the mechanic that I need to buy coolant. He said I should use ONLY water for some time (like 3 months) before using coolant. Please I need opinions on this because I don't know if a new radiator require only water first before using coolant. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Your mechanic is right. Since he isn't a dealership performing dealership level repairs then you should use water first to confirm there are no leaks before switching to coolant (unless you're using all those low quality coolants) Highest a few days is enough for this test. 95 Likes 3 Shares |

Conner44: True. Use water for a few days and once you verify no leaks, drain and fill with quality coolant. Your mech has saved you some money 130 Likes 2 Shares |

Jjokke: Most of the NEW radiators in the market are not original. They are mostly made in China. So it is advised that you use ordinary water to test it first to confirm there are no leakages before draining the water and applying original coolant. Be very careful because some of the coolant in the market are just dyed water! Good luck. 42 Likes 1 Share |

mayor2013: Not necessarily. Firstly, it may not be easy getting an original coolant recommended by Lexus. Secondly the radiator may not be the original as well . If ordinary water is used especially with the tendency of having solid minerals in it , it may seal any potential leakage areas within the radiator. My thoughts though..... I have replaced a new radiator on same make of car before and added ordinary water and nothing happened. Moreso , I am sure before the guy sell that car or let it go, everything should still be fine...... Lexus are built solidly!. It's from Toyota after all. |

The car manufacturer advise that only Radiator Coolant should be used on your car, water should normally be used in emergency situations, but in Nigeria we use water as a norm which easily overheats in holdups and corrodes the metals in the radiator and with time you start experiencing leakages. You can use water for a few days like some people suggested just to check that there are no leaks but not 3 months 2 Likes |
