Does this even make sense? They are dismissed because they asked oyibo for money but we Nigerians face same fate daily, infact we are forced to give money and i guess we are expected to jump and applaud the men in black for this eye service? |

I can bet 95% of Nigerian Police officers are guilty of this same crime. Police and bribery are 5&6! |

nairalandkachy1:Oh! Now I get it... These 2 men are NOT regular police officers but men of the police constabulary and this is why the Oyo State Commissioner of Police said in the video that they were NOT procecuted. It's time for both men to head right back to cocoa farming... 1 Like 1 Share |

Cromagnon: Other people will reapply, with stringent rules. There's a reason that policemen in some countries are mandated to wear body cameras. Things can change if the government is serious about making changes |

Nigeria is now becoming good. .. inec waec and neco supervisors collecting money from principals and student to allow exam malpractice. Inec men rigging election to be dismiss. But again this girl was not forced to give money.. this girl was not harrassed. But if it wer to be in the north she could have been kidnap by men wearing uniform..i m sure the public disgrace of the video is killing the two officers already. And that region wer dey came from are noted for such empathy feeling. "How is family" " give me something." |

Noraly Schoenmaker (aka. ItchyBoots), a brave lady travelling alone by motorcycle & video documenting her journey, has - with few exceptions - been shown enduring kindness & helpfulness by the people she has met throughout her adventure ride through Africa. Unfortunately, across much of Africa, official corruption, especially by police at roadside checkpoints, is something of a perennial problem, e.g. everything from asking money for "Cold water", through to threats with intimidation, etc. In this particular instance, a direct demand for cash - delivered by a somewhat large, brusque & intimidating Nigerian policeman - was dealt with by Noraly with her characteristic politeness & humour. Nevertheless, the encounter does little to dismiss the enduring image of corruption, by officialdom, within Africa in general and in Nigeria in particular. That said and contrary to that negative image, if one watches the ItchyBoots videos, one will see that many of Noraly's checkpoint interactions have been all of polite, kindly, humorous & professional. Such a shame then that - because of one idiot policeman - that specific encounter (by confirming the stereotype of the corrupt Nigerian policeman) tarnishes & diminishes all those other checkpoint encounters where the police officers have, to their credit, behaved in a courteous & professional manner. Whilst 'dismissal' of those two police officers might seem somewhat harsh, a strong message of deterrence needs to be sent to others of their ilk whom might be tempted to indulge in similar such acts of attempted extortion, friendly or otherwise. Whether attempts at extortion are committed against Oyibo's / Obroni's / Muzungo's / Twobobs or 'local' people (where locals, for sure, suffer the most from it), corruption corrodes decent society and it has to be stopped, for the good of all ! |
