Super Eagles' 25-man Africa Cup of Nations squad: Five biggest issues facing Peseiro highlighted https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/read_news.php?nid=49945 While Nigeria's 25-man AFCON roster contains proven talents, a closer inspection reveals key deficiencies that could derail their lofty title hopes. There exist pressing questions for manager Jose Peseiro to address. In attack, over-dependence on Victor Osimhen's scoring threatens to blunt Nigeria if injuries hit. None of Iheanacho, Umar or Boniface offer a tested Plan B at the No 9. Additionally, the squad lacks a creative spark like an Okocha-style classic playmaker to provide incisive chances. An injury to Wilfred Ndidi at the defensive midfield during the course of the tournament may risk exposure given his world class protection. Without cover for Ndidi, issues emerge over who shields the unconvincing centre-back options. Out wide also brings issues over the left back role in particular. Neither Zaidu or Aina convince currently at filling the problem position, with Bruno Onyemaechi yet to convince the coach on reasons why he should be considered for a starting berth. This leaves an obvious weak link other teams could exploit. Furthermore, for a young side , the pressure and expectations appear uncomfortably high. For a squad with few big-tournament stars, the weight of seeking Nigeria's 4th AFCON crown may crush confidence. Here are 5 potential weaknesses in Nigeria's 25-man AFCON squad: 1. Over-reliance on Osimhen for goals: While Victor Osimhen has been prolific for Napoli, he has struggled with injuries. If he gets hurt or has a dip in form, Nigeria lacks a proven Plan B at striker with the likes of Umar and Boniface still trying to establish themselves. 2. Imbalanced midfield mix: Despite naming 5 midfielders, there is a lack of a real creative playmaker to unlock defenses. Onyedika, Aribo and Onyeka offer good all-round play but none possess the incisive passing of an Okocha-type No 10 that Nigeria has lacked. 3. Missing defensive midfield depth: Wilfred Ndidi is world-class as the lone defensive midfielder shielding the backline. But without a proper backup holding midfielder, his absence could expose the defense badly. 4. Left back concerns: The left-back role looks shaky, with Zaidu Sanusi currently out of form, Aina being an unnatural fit and Bruno Onyemaechi yet to impress the manager. This could be targeted as an area of weakness by opponents. 5. Heavy expectations: As one of the continent's superpowers, Nigeria will be expected to challenge for the title. For a squad low on real match-winners, this pressure could overwhelm a young, developing side. 1 Like |

I agree with him though but in as much as it is a good thing, how many boys are we going to cap tie 2 Likes 1 Share |

On #1, what an irony as Nigeria has depth in the striker position. Awoniyi’s absence is due to injury. Hopefully Moffi makes it as Iheanacho’s situation is uncertain. I would have preferred Onuachu to Sadiq. 2. You don't need an Okocha in this team. You need a player with steel who’s ball carrying is premium regardless of position of play. Think Amokachi, Victor Moses. An excellent ball holder with some pristine play-making and passing abilities, we have in Kelechi Nwakali (who unfortunately missed out). However, Iwobi is the man we must hope does not get an injury or is sent out, else we are finished Also, Alhassan’s tacking/pressing (something Onyeka already offers), but Alhassan is a creator as well. I hope Alhassan is standby for Ndidi 3. Onyedika, unfortunately, is the only true DM option as it stands. 4. We have no LB issues. Aina can also do a job there. Bassey as well if need be. 5. The players always knew the mission with Peseiro giving an ultimatum to go all the way to the final. MetalJigsaw: 2 Likes |

Tessyy1701: It it is a midfielder we must try and cap him. We don't have too many options in midfield. If he was an attacker I won't care. A good young midfielder like that must be blended into the team as soon as possible. Remember one injury to onazi in 2014 world cup and our midfield collapsed The three musketeers in our u20 are there but still very young daga Eletu and akinsanmiro. Anything can happen in future. We don't know who will blow or not. Let us cap him and blend him and see what he has to offer. |

Tessyy1701:He is not consistent bro. If Tim was born in Nigeria and you mentioned him as a prospect, Komekn would tell you he is earning small wage so shouldn't be in the discussion. Tim is good but he needs time. The Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu we mentioned here sometimes ago, where are they now? 4 Likes |
