maroc 88 was my First ,when Roger mila and his gang shocked us .
Then 1990, Algiers. Rababt make wont let us rest . We were pummeled in the opening game by the star studded Algerians

Rabah Madjer.

Also in Algeria's squad in the 1982 world cup that was cheated out of the quarter finals by some evil connivance between Germany and Austria. Anyway, karma came for the Germans in de final.

Yeah,we got thrashed 5 one in the opening match . Ouch

I have never watched AFCON that is dramatic as 2013 AFCON that South Africa hosted and Nigeria won. And Coach Stephen Keshi (May his soul forever rest in peace) resigned immediately after winning. People halla, wetin. Keshi say NFF didn't believe in him. That they had already bought tickets and booked their flight. That they were going back home for sure after Quarter Finals (as NFF believed they would lose the match). NFF no dey ever try.

I remember a certain Abbey George

I remember osaze odemwingie.

Okocha free kick goal against Cameroon

Kanus assist for Utaka to score winning goal against Cameroon.
Unfortunately we lost to Tunisia in the semis of that nations cup, I still remember how Osaze missed his spot kick that day.

My first AFCON was 1984. I watched Nigeria come from 2 goals down against Egypt to win by penalties in the semi-finals, only for late Theophilus Abega and Ernest Ebongue to run riot against the Green Eagles as then known by 3-1, even after we took the lead in the 10th minute via late Muda Lawal.

We did not qualify for the 1986 tournament so I did not watch it (no interest). I have watched it from 1988 till date without interruption.

I have very vague memories of Senegal '92. Tunisia '94 was was the first Nations cup I watched consciously and we won cool.
South Africa '96 and Burkina Faso '98 were a total blur as we did not participate.
Nigeria/Ghana 2000 will forever remain in our memories as a cancelled penalty shootout robbed us of the trophy to Cameroon sad.
Mali 2002 (Mali Deux mille Deux) remains my best of all the AFCON, we won bronze medal with just 5 goals through out the tournament grin
Tunisia 2004, Egypt 2006 back to back bronze
Ghana 2008 crashed out
Angola 2010 bronze
Equatorial Guinea/Gabon 2012 blur as we no qualify
South Africa 2013 We won🏆
Equatorial Guinea 2015, Gabon 2017 total blur as we no gree qualify (it's like our spirit no gel with those 2 countries)
Egypt 2019 bronze
Cameroon 2021 crashed out
Cote D'Ivoire 2023 - only time we tell

Total of 16 tournaments, I've witnessed so far. Some Indomie pikins cannot relate

Exactly same here. The only exception is 2021 that I didn't watch at all. I think we are in the same age bracket.

I was heartbroken after that match. The Indomitable Lions of Thomas Nkono, Emmanuel Kunde, Oman Biyik, Kana Biyik, Roger Milla and the other Cameroon players who were mainly from Canon Sportive didn't allow Nigerian Eagles Fly.

Ernest Okonkwo, Richard Asiegbu and Tolu Fatoyinbo of Radio Nigeria were almost in tears.

Then, we were watching the match on TV and simultaneously listening to Radio commentary of the match.

How did you not remember the 2-goal hero for Cameroon in the final? The late Theophilus Abega who later became a politician? At that time, Canon Sportive, Tonerre Kalala and Union Duoala were the three teams that contributed players to the Cameroonian national team, especially Canon Sportive. That team of the early 80s was fire!

The referee for this game was Idrissa Sarr. Using today's offside rules, Henry Nwosu's super headed goal in that final would not have been disallowed.

Same here. Okwaraji with his Afro hair stunning the Camerounians with an early goal although they came to draw and Bright Omokaro getting a red card(10-10) after injuring is it Belloumi or Ferhaoui in the semi finals and the Algerians had finished their 3subs with Nigeria advancing via Penalties and in Lagos then you hear the Chant Penarity eeh Penarity and the gospel song changed to a football song: I'm going home, I'm going home, I'm going Home to watch that match between Nigeria and Algeria, I'm going home to watch that match.........Peter Rufai.......he catch the ball for Nigeria.

Not correct. Stephen Okechukwu Keshi(of blessed memory) took us to 2014 Fifa World Cup.

I actually figured out an important name was missing from my list, but I couldn't find the name offhand.

Thanks for remembering Theophilus Abega. He was one of the pivotal players for Cameroon in the 80/90s. They had a formidable team that was robbed of victory against England in Italia 90 by an obviously biased Referee.
