Trump sex abuse accuser E. Jean Carroll says she's more known – but more 'hated' – after coming forward

The $10 million defamation case against Donald Trump rolled in a New York courtroom Thursday as the Ex-President attended his mother-in-law’s funeral in Florida — with writer E. Jean Carroll batting away claims that she’s enjoyed being in the spotlight since accusing him of rape.

"Yes, I'm more well known, but I’m hated by a lot more people," Carroll, 80, testified as Trump lawyer Alina Habba grilled her about whether publicizing her claim that Trump forced himself on her inside a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room has boosted her social "status."

During 90 minutes of questioning from Habba in Manhattan federal court, Carroll admitted that she enjoyed receiving praise from celebrities like the actress Bette Midler after a separate jury awarded her $5 million last May.

That jury found Trump, 77, liable for sexual abuse and defamation over Carroll's claim that the real estate mogul forcibly penetrated her with his fingers in the 1996 episode — and then lied about it.

Her decision to come forward in June 2019 also scored her invites to two celebrity-attended parties at Vanity Fair correspondent Molly Jong-Fast’s Manhattan home, Carroll testified.


Carroll, while being questioned by Trump lawyer Alina Habba, maintained that her status has taken a hit since Trump’s disparaging comments about her.

But the veteran "Ask E Jean" advice columnist maintained that her status in general has been "lowered" as she's received hundreds of vile online messages — including threats calling for her to jailed and raped — after the then-president unleashed his millions of followers on her by falsely claiming at the White House that he had no idea who she was.

"I'm partaking in this trial to get my old reputation and status back," testified Carroll, who wore a white blazer over a brown turtleneck shirt on the witness stand.

US District Judge Lewis Kaplan has already found Trump liable of using "malice" to defame Carroll by claiming that she accused him of rape to get "publicity."

All that's left to decide in the ongoing one-week trial is how much Trump will be ordered to pay.


Carroll's lawyers have asked for more than $10 million in compensation, plus millions more in "punitive" damages.

Carroll's lawyers have asked a jury of nine New Yorkers to award Carroll more than $10 million to help her repair her reputation, plus millions more in punitive damages — which jurors are allowed to order to punish Trump from continuing to disparage Carroll.

Among the evidence introduced to jurors Thursday was a video of a press conference Trump gave after he appeared at the trial a day earlier.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Trump again disparaged Carroll as “a person I never knew” and claimed the trial was “rigged” against him.

"How much money will it take to make him stop? Because he has not stopped," Carroll lawyer Shawn Crowley told jurors during Tuesday’s opening statements.

"We submit that that number should be significant. Very significant," Crowley added.

"Donald Trump, after all, is a self-professed billionaire."

Trump was cleared of a rape claim at last year’s trial after the jury was "unconvinced" that he penetrated Carroll using his penis — but Carroll's claim that Trump "raped" her is still "substantially true" in the sense of how people think about rape today, according to Judge Kaplan.

The ongoing trial will not be on Friday, but is expected to wrap up early next week.
