[August 13 na expiry date]
Good day NL

Please don't air me. I paid my last rent in September, September 17th to be precise. When is my rent suppose to expire, is it not September the following year?

How come they are counting August?

If you do your birthday March 5, are you celebrating your next year birthday by February 5?
OR
When a new child is born on Monday and named Monday the following week, why didn't the naming be held on Sunday..

We calculate everything right but when it comes to rent, we draw the line?

Please come to my rescue and explain because I don't understand again.

When is my rent suppose to expire I need clarification. Thank you.
Re: Rent Issue! by GoodBoi1(m): 10:48am On Jan 23
If your rent starts counting from the 1st of september and you paid it on the 16th of september then you are to renew on the LAST DAY of August the next year, this is full 12 months/365/366 days/1 year. If your rent starts counting from 16th september then by 15th September it is 365/366 days which is a complete year. Don't let anybody cheat you.

This kind of thread will make realise that many naralanders are not that good at counting

you post is not clear
i believe you are new in the compound

what date was written on your receipt?

when i packed into my compound, i paid May 24th but i told the landlord clearly that the receipt should reflect from June 1st even though i packed in June 6th
it is what is on your receipt that matters

[August na expiry]

Your rent will expire 16th of september.
If they ask you why, tell them to count 365 days from 17th of September.

If they misbehave, sue them for peace violation.

Just let him know that you will be paying rent every September

Because if you pay in August

Next year you will pay in July, so they will be shifting you at the end you will loose a whole year rent to them due to this backed dated system

U don't count like that.
Count September to October 1 month. And so on. Don't just say September.
Re: Rent Issue! by mikendie(m): 10:53am On Jan 23
It depends when you paid but from your explanation, 17th September 2023 should expire on the 16th of September 2024. Where September to August is applicable is if the rent was counted from 1st September. In that case, the rent would be due by August 31.
Use the explanation above to treat your case. Thank you

Many are getting it wrong, instead of them to use date, they're using months for there selfish interests, sept 17 should last Sept 16th following year.
But why many nairaladers they get am wrong abi most of them be agent and caretaker?

Don't you have tenancy agreement?

It is September to August, that's how we calculate it on all the properties we manage.

Do well to pay your landlord on time

Lets break the rent down to monthly basis..
Sept 17 - Oct 16 = 1 month
Oct - Nov = 2 months
Nov - Dec = 3 months
Dec - Jan = 4 months
Jan - Feb = 5 months
Feb - Mar = 6 months
Mar - Apr = 7 months
Apr - May = 8 months
May - Jun = 9 months
Jun - Jul = 10 months
Jul - Aug = 11 months
Aug - Sep = 12 months

So, why should the rent expire by Aug 16 ??

Re: Rent Issue! by MrHerrera(m): 10:55am On Jan 23
A year is January 1st to December 31st not January 1st to December 1st. The count is until a day before the exact previous date. Another year start the next day which is the next January 1.

If you count a year from January 2nd 2023, it will be exactly 1 year on January 1st 2024 which is a day before January 2nd 2024 exact date from previous payment or start of count. With this you can say It is January to January

If you pay rent on September 17th, It should be due next year September 16th. The next payment should begin from September 17th. Which make it Sept to Sept.

It can only be Sept to August if you paid or start count from September 1st then it will end on August 31st just like a calendar years is from January 1st to December 31st.

I hope everyone understand now.

If you pay September 17th, your rent expires September 16th - that is 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months or simply 1 year. If the calculate by month, then for your case:
1st month: Sept 17th - Oct 16th
2nd month: Oct 17th - Nov 16th
3rd month: Nov 17th - Dec 16th
.... and so on....
11th month: Jul. 17th to Aug. 16th
12th month: Aug. 17th to Sept 16th

This is what the court counts - No gree for anybody

Op, in a year do we have January to December or January to January?

It is not about when you paid, but when your rent expired!

Your rent could have expired on August 30 and even if you later paid in October, it would start reading by August 30. Which means September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024

However, if your rent expired the exact day you paid then it should be September 17, 2023 - September 16, 2024

As for birthdays, do you start counting your years from the day you were born or from the next year? That is if you were born in 2000 for instance, you'd start counting 1year old from 2001 and not 2000!

It can never be august. It definitely will be sept. Let's assume it sept 30, it expires sept 29 the following year. September 1 expires august 31... In that way it tallies 365 days. Anything other than this as i said earlier is pure evil

September to September is 13 months. August is correct!

If you paid 18th of September, 18th of October makes it 1 month.

Now keep counting.
