This is the kind of pent up emotions, anger, bitterness, acrimony that leads a partner into commiting murder. If the centre is no longer holding I think they should just simply go their separate ways instead of patching things up. Or the man could be afraid of exhorbitant alimony otherwise he could have just sent her packing.
