Ibadan Explosion: Atiku Replies Gov. Makinde Over Claims On Refusal To Commiserate With Him

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has replied Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde over his claims that he refuse to commiserate with him on the incident.

Recall that Makinde had berated Atiku over his failure to show concern regarding the explosion in Ibadan.

Makinde stated this on Monday when he received the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, at his office in Ibadan.

The governor said the former vice president has neither called nor sent a condolence message to commiserate with him and the people of his state over the explosion.

He stated that President Bola Tinubu, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had called him over the incident, but Atiku, a member of the same political party as him, had not reached out to him.

Reacting in a statement on Monday, Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, stated that the former Vice President released a statement to commiserate with victims and the people of Oyo State.

According to him, Makinde has been too busy to take track of media reports on the incident.

The statement reads: “With due respect to Governor Seyi Makinde, we wish to correct his expression about the response of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar to the recent explosion in the city of Ibadan.

“Atiku Abubakar made a condolence message about the Ibadan explosion, less than 24 hours of its occurrence, where he shared his commiseration and empathy with the good people and government of Oyo State over the incident.

“Perhaps the Governor has been too busy to take track of media reports on the incident. But we wish to put on record that on the 17th of January, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar did make a widely available message on the Ibadan incident, which reads as follows:

“‘I wish to express my condolences to the good people and government of Oyo State over the explosion that rocked the capital city of Ibadan late yesterday night.

“‘While the government continues to provide humanitarian support to victims of the explosion, I commiserate with the families of those who might have lost their lives and property to the explosion. -AA’”

Atiku didn't handle it well. It is not about publication, Atiku is duty band to have called the governor directly if he cannot physically present.

Atiku even have time to reply him.

Makinde a member of the G5 governors should be more interested in tinubu congratulating him than atiku.

I read this somewhere. Do you copy and paste in all discussions ?.... Anyway, Atiku commiserated with the people of Oyo State. Atiku is a politician and won't even want to call the governor. Knowing how he betrayed him and his party. Yes,, Atiku doesn't hide feelings. The most important people to be commiserated with are the people of Oyo and that was done. Everybody is not Obi that plays foreign politics

Like all politicians were meant to start calling and trooping into the government house to say SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPENED?

It's a choice not a criteria for being a good person a having a good heart...

Because Atiku should care about the election more than humanity? There is time for politics, there is time for governance and there is time for patriotism. Are you saying that residents of Ibadan didn't vote for Atiku? Are you saying that all PDP members in Oyo state betrayed Atiku?

You guys should stop defending nonsense. Atiku is bitter, simple as ABC. We get it. But as an elder statesman, as someone who is still nursing ambition, he should know better.
What stops him from making a simple call to the governor, a gesture of good will to over 5 million population through the governor. Someone who makes calls everyday!

Atiku shouldn’t be doing like that gbajue man who thinks Nigeria is a social media republic.

Not up to 50% of the total Population of the country in active in our social media space.

A direct call to the governor is more than enough.

Politics is a game and interest-based and Nigerian version is dirty.
Atiku couldn't call him directly because Oyo Governor took side with Wike who plotted against Atiku from becoming the President. You remember the G5 governors? Seyi Makinde has by default pitched tent against welcoming the President from the overall PDP party by the reason of his affliation to Wike who was opposed to northern President when there was already a northern party chairman. But Wike too had agenda in all of it though. He was the one who pushed for northern party chairman ahead of time so that he too could be qualified as Presidential candidate for PDP from the southern part in order to edge out Atiku.

It is what it is. The ally of your enemy will eventually look like an enemy. It is Nigerian politics, it is dirty as it comes.
