Alright Nairalanders, let's talk about our experiences pertaining to the aforementioned topic.

Have you lend a friend money? How did it turn out? Did they pay back on time? Have you lost relationships due to this?

This thread should be fun...

The one I can remember, this was last year July or August. My friend asked for 5K to add and pay school fees, I gave him my last card. I told him the money was relegated for my school bills too but I would give him as my friend and he should pay back, he vouched to.. I gave that benefit of doubt and transfered everything in my account to him.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is February, I've not seen it. I asked him once or twice in the past, he said he would pay, he's a close friend so I didn't disturb. Since I didn't ask again, he didn't talk about it again nor pay.

I've learnt my lessons, we're still friends and even visit each other now, but I've not mention it to him lest I severe the relationship.

I don't know if he has forgotten or deliberately doesn't want to pay, but either ways, no qualms, God dey.

Firstly i borrowed my senior cousin 30k way back in 2019, i borrowed the money from someone since he has a tough problem concerning his health. After when he re-gain his health, i told him to work with me so that i will pay the money myself because i observe him finding it difficult to pay the cash. Atlast he betrayed me by blackmailing my name, but i later paid the money without stressing him because i sense he is not ready to pay the money. But when i've the worst difficulty in my business he was the first man to make mockery of me..
I've alot of experience because i was doing great in an average community some years back..
The truth about the matter is don't lend money to friends and relatives but you can help them if possible and if you want to do remember there are 70% chances you will not get ur money back or likely it might cause a life time enemity..

Exactly what I'm doing now. Exactly what I advise now.

Infact, I will want to be gifting than lending. I don't even have strength to start asking for my money and wailing.. That's why I left that one even as pressing as it's...

That is how some of us create and abet monsters. Let me tell that there is no friendship between you and that guy that you want to preserve. He is not your friend, because a true friend will not betray your trust the way he has done.

So, ask for and collect your money. He should as well get out of your life or you cut him off once you have gotten the money from him. Otherwise, he will do worse to you in some other ways in the nearest future and expects you to just take it, in the name of fake friendship.

3 main lessons I've learned..
1. Most people who borrow under duress and emotion hardly pay back as at when due, if they ever get to repay you.
2. It's often the person you least expect to repay on time that does so, with gratitude.
3. Lend what can comfortably lose. That way you're less exposed to pain that comes with default.

Hmmmm, my brother, I'm less problematic. The reason I let it go is because there's a time he was financially bouyant, he used to make me smile, sometimes carry me out to relaxation center, bills on him. I had looked for a way to repay him, then that happened, I left it as it's.

But I wouldn't lend him money again. For the fact that he didn't even talk about it again. I'm a law student, the money I gave him was to be added to buy a suit, till today, i don't have one because of him...

Oh meh, Better know who you dey give your money if not otilor

My rule of thumb.

I have a few people in my circle of trust I can lend money, other than that, I rarely give out loans except amounts I can forego.

Same way, when I'm in a fix and I need and get a bailout, i always make sure to pay back as and when due.

In 2021, I did a business with a man in my church. He contacted me to get buyer for him to sell roofing rods that was sent to him from abroad. The rods were much almost filled the warehouse when I went to see it, I was impressed cos it was worth millions.

I negotiated my percentage with him, and after days of rigorous calls, I managed to get a buyer. I Introduced the buyer to him and waited patiently for the magic words "Send me your account details"

Then this man started showing me his true colours, first he lied to me that the buyer didn't pay, that he (the buyer) just inspected the rods and left...I called and discovered that the buyer indeed paid, (even though he didn't empty the warehouse, made a satisfying buy) And based on the amount the buyer paid and the percentage I negotiated with the man, my cut was supposed to be 200k. I sent him a WhatsApp VN, telling him how disappointed I am with him. That they're the ones always telling we the youths not to be lazy, yet they deprive us of the fruits from the efforts we make.

He then told me to borrow him my cut that he has a family emergency to take care of that he'll pay me back. Can you imagine....Since he was the owner of the business, the money was paid into his account by the buyer, so I didn't have much of a choice than to let him have it.

Oya pay me back na, uncle no gree. He started telling me that isn't he the one who brought the business, that he has family needs to attend to. Bla bla bla. Oh! So me I don't know what to use money and do abi, 5 months, down the line and this man hasn't given me a penny. I reported him to the pastor because he use to teach Sunday school. After the pastor called and talked to him, he gave me 50k.

Oya pay me the remaining 150k...for where, it took another 4 months of calling and texting. He even blocked me on Whatsapp. When I couldn't take it anymore, I just came to his house to para for him. I saw his wife and reported the matter to her, that evening, he sent me 100k. Making it 150k.

Till date, he never balanced me the remaining 50k. I just left it for him cos I didn't have the strength to start dragging him for that one again.

The truth is that many Nigerians are just greedy. Most of the time, these people would have the resources to pay you, but greed wouldn't allow them do it.

1. Don't borrow or lend anyone money.
2. If you must, borrow or lend with movable collateral.
3. Never ever believe in loan repayment date.
4. Only lend or borrow money you can afford to write off.
