Insecurity: It’s Time For State Police – Osinbajo’s Ex-spokesman Tells Tinubu by TheRareGem1(f): 6:57am On Feb 04
Laolu Akande, a former spokesman to ex-Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has urged President Bola Tinubu, state governors, and National Assembly members to establish state police in the face of the prevailing insecurity in the country.

Akande said the current centralized security structure was inadequate to resolve the insecurity situation in the country.

Speaking on Channels TV’s “Inside Sources,” on Friday, Akande said: “The time has come to give that authority and power.

Now, this has to be done properly and that is why we are calling for a proper constitutional amendment that will define how this will not be abused.

“It is also important for all the stakeholders to come together and ensure proper rules of engagement. The time for state police is now. We are calling on the President.

“We are calling on the governors, the members of the National Assembly and the State Assemblies to set the ball rolling and we are also calling on the traditional rulers, religious leaders and all leaders of thought to come behind this idea of state police.”

That is the way to go! This will stem the tide of insecurity. Laolu Akande has been speaking brilliantly, providing solutions to multiple national problems. President Bola Tinubu should yield proactively to the national security challenges. It is already getting out of hand. Kidnapers should not take over everywhere. Stop them and ensure all captives are freed. God bless Nigeria.

You left power and authority less than a year ago. You had a whole eight years to tell your bosses about this wonderful idea but no, you will rather get sense and inspiration the moment you're out of power.

Na so Tinubu suggested all these things to move Nigeria forward and now, he's not doing any of them

State police is not advisable. Governors will use them with impunity to stiffle every opposition in their states. Also inter-state police coordination will be difficult and criminals will be the better for it. Imagine if someone from Kano commits a serious crime in Akwa Ibom and runs back to his state and the police in Kano shields him because they think his crime is backed up by sharia law or because Akwa Ibom has a rival political party there. The idea of state police must be jettisoned because it is a recipe for total collapse of the security of the nation.

You're ignorant. There will be federal police which will be the Nigerian police force for interstate crime or federal crime. There'd be state police for each state.

You're saying the populace should suffer insecurity because of the possibility of abuse by governors? How about putting checks and balance?

cheesy

state police will always be good on paper. As far as this system of government is concern, state police will never work.
Nigeria democracy never mature reach that side.
Ordinary Ebubeagu or Amotekun is being used to oppress oppositions by the governors, imagine what will happen if you give a full police structure to these power drunk governors.
lol as an opposition, you might wake up one morning and you'll be arrested for terrorism under the command of the governor and no IGP will save you.
State police can only work in a regional government not settings.

The good thing about Nigeria is that someone who's not in government is always very competent and has solution to everything.
They are only like that before they get into government and after they are out of government.

They won't agree with you now because in thèîr myópic minds, they cañ't see it happening.
There are states that don't pay salaries, what will happen when those states don't pay police?
The police will literally arrest anyone on the street for any reason just to generate money for themselves and their families, they will aid crîmînaIs provided they get their share.
These people are waiting for it to start happening and they will start criticizing again.

Tinubu and his gang of fake Awoists that parade themselves in the South West for years were shouting restructuring like little whying bitches.

Agreed that Buhari doesn't believe in it. But now that Tinubu himself is now in power,he should have set the motion for giving power back to the states the moment he got into power

But Iro ni. He will not want to offend his friends up North. While our people down south are being killed and slaughtered

Come Election year,it is Igbo people in Lagos he will be attacking and claiming they want to take over the Lagos. The people killing his people down south he wont be able to take an action against them

Nonesense!

Is this not already happening in the federal police, allow us handle it in states, only a mad man will be doing same things and enduring the bad results forever.

Don't mind him. I watch a debate on this same issue years ago. This is the same sentiments expressed by all the Hausa speakers present.
They're the same people who want Sharia, but at the same time, against state police.
They even went as far as expressing the fear of free interstate movement. That's where I realized that these people are on to something.
We can have state police and have them report solely to the state judiciary.

Being a Vice president in Nigeria is just ceremonious. The office has no power to tackle security without the approval of the president. Buhari was not ready to do so
