FG Can't Continue To Subsidize Electricity For Nigerians - Minister by bennybuhari: 7:54pm On Feb 14 |
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says Nigeria cannot continue to subsidise electricity, adding that the nation must begin to move towards a cost-effective tariff model, as the country is currently indebted to the tune of 1.3 trillion naira to generating companies (GenCos) and 1.3 billion dollars owed gas companies. Adelabu, addressed a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said only 450 billion naira was budgeted for subsidy this year but the ministry needs over 2 trillion naira for subsidy. He said state governments will now be allowed to generate power independently to supply power to their states. On the grid that has collapsed for about six times between December 2023 and now, he said this was caused by shortage of gas, ageing machines in the grid value chain, low capacity to evacuate generated power, and destruction of power stations in some parts of the North-East geopolitical zone of the country. He said the Transmission Company of Nigeria has over 100 abandoned projects due to variations on contract figures as a result of the fluctuations of the forex, hence the company will not award any new contracts till all such projects are completed. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/02/14/just-in-fg-cant-continue-to-subsidise-electricity-power-minister/

Make Government stop behaving as if Nigerians are rich. Naira was floated and subsidy was removed, this is not the right time for Government to stop subsidizing power |

Tinubu doesn’t really understand Nigeria. He thinks Nigerians are rich like himself. There are policies that will not work on Nigeria settings. It will have a chain reaction or shockwave like the fuel subsidy and the floating of naira |

Foolish incompetent minister. Instead of the clueless buffoon to fix gas shortage that has thrown most part of Nigeria into darkness, he's talking about government removing subsidy on electricity. Na Tinubu wey I blame sha. Nepotism and tribalism made you a minister. |

Give everyone prepaid metre. Nigerians are paying for darkness with estimated billing. If every customer has prepaid, they will load what they can afford. Some will load 500 naira to charge only their phones and it will last them for 6 months. When the purchasing power is on the decline, people will eat first before recharging enough to power their refridgerators. |
