No fewer than 200 defenceless civilians were murdered by gunmen and extremists nationwide in January 2024 alone including attacks on Barkin Ladi and Bokkos areas of Plateau State, a report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has stated.

The armed attackers also had a culture of renaming some of the villages they sacked, the report added, while citing how “Rankum was renamed Mahanga; Fass in Riyom (renamed Tafawa), Gwoi in Barkin Ladi (renamed Lugere), Fit ma Bucher (renamed Magaraje), Farandong Hai (renamed Josho) and Horop Mushere (renamed Dajin Gwamna) all in Bokkos.”

The Intersociety report released on Wednesday to SaharaReporters called on the international community to intensify their campaigns against ethno-religious persecution in Nigeria and compel the President Bola Tinubu-led government to respect religious freedom and human rights.

The report partly read, “Many of the Plateau Christian villages uprooted and sacked by Jihadist herdsmen have been renamed including: Rankum (renamed Mahanga), Fass in Riyom (renamed Tafawa), Gwoi in Barkin Ladi (renamed Lugere), Fit ma Bucher (renamed Magaraje), Farandong Hai (renamed Josho) and Horop Mushere (renamed Dajin Gwamna) all in Bokkos; all of which currently serve as staging grounds for more Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen attacks in Plateau State.

“The attacks on defenceless Nigerians in the past 13 months (Jan 2023-Jan 2024) also led to the burning down or wanton destruction of more than 20,000 houses and uprooting and sacking of no fewer than 500 communities in the ten worst hit States of Plateau, Benue, Southern Kaduna and other parts of the state; Niger, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Adawama, Kebbi, FCT, Kogi and Enugu State where over 22 communities have been attacked or threatened with Jihadist herdsmen and nomad militia attacks.

“The most shocking of it all is that the herdsmen operate freely and unchallenged with impunity and reckless abandon; with the Nigerian Security Forces (NSFs), widely accused of turning blind eyes or looking the other side; except when it comes to protection of cows and their herders.

“Instances of the Nigerian Military’s brazen partisanship and biasness in the massacre of Nigerians are too many to be mentioned.

“Our recommendations are: calling, as a matter of extreme urgency, for the appointment of the UN Secretary General’s Special Emergency Envoy on Nigeria and UN Security Council Resolution authorizing comprehensive UN-backed Commission of Inquiry or International Investigation into systematic and well-coordinated ethno-religious attacks by government-protected Jihadists on defenceless Nigerians and their sacred places of worship and learning, dwelling houses and means of livelihood.

“The International UN Investigation call shall cover the ongoing mass killings, abductions, disappearances, torture, lootings, wanton destruction of civilian houses and other properties and other grievous international offenses ravaging the Old Eastern Nigeria particularly in Imo and other parts of the Southeast.

“Calling for immediate appointment by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; of Special Representatives on Nigeria (.i.e. UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Worship or Belief and a Special Rep of the UN Refugee Agency) to comprehensively investigate the situation of millions of Christian IDPs and other moderate Muslims including those that have crossed international borders (refugees) so as to ascertain their numbers and locations and roles played by the Nigerian Government regarding their welfare; a fundamental part of the country’s international human rights and humanitarian obligations under UN System.

“The UN-backed Commission of Inquiry or investigations shall be comprehensive, timely and conclusive with their outcomes referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in accordance with Chapter Seven (V11) of the UN Charter of 1945; for criminal investigation including arrest, trial and conviction of the individual and group perpetrators including state actors (aiders, instigators, sponsors and abettors) and group and individual non state actors such as MACBAN and FUNAM.”

Too shettimanic.

"BAT will handle the economy, Shettima will handle security." Oya nah.

But why no python dance in the North? All these things happen in the North but the sit-at-home in the East is the government's headache. Is it that the insecurity in the North is not felt or the python dance in the East is not about safety for the East?

They have been nicknamed "Attackers", no longer bandits or kidnappers or terrorists or Boko Haram.

The hypocritical Nigerians won't say anything when their fellow Nigerians are being slaughtered and their lands taken from them but once you say 'let's divide the country', all of them will find their voices and begin to rant. Yakubu Gowon and David Mark are very silent as Plateau and Benue people are being slaughtered. It's like it's insects that are being killed.
Tufiakwa! It sucks to be a Nigerian.

Honestly Nigeria and nigerians needs to be studied as a special course in university, what is happening in nigeria is 20× more than what caused Arab spring that led to destabilisation of most middle eastern countries yet we still dey gidigba.

Our elected politicians are making a huge mistake by not tackling this insecurity bedevilling the country because they think our resilance as citizens are topnotch which is true but they also fail to realize that we are reaching our breaking point of no return of which may lead to total disintegration of their cash cow(nigeria).

Last time was about police brutality, this time will be about something far terrifying than police brutality.

To before warned is to before harmed,

Nigerians are in every country on this earth, so no politician should think they are safe, that they will escape when they have finished destroying and setting the country ablaze.

So, Seun what kind of meanless headling is this. Are you afraid of calling them Fulani jijadist.
The only pity I have is the christiams and their pastors like Adebayo who decieved the christians into voting Muslim muslim ticket in the north and SW.

Be sure that the Yorubas christians cant be spared in this jihadist agenda. But for South East be rest assured it cannot happen.

The agenda is politcal and not religous but the use religion to deceive you guys

angry

These demons are carrying out 19th century activities in the 21st century.

How can a governor from those states especially Benue and Plateau, keep quiet to the atrocities of strangers, killing, arson, forced displacement, even renaming of villages.

Is this not genocide on full display? Are these governors senseless? why can't they stop trying to be politically correct and deal ruthlessly with these terrorists. What are they afraid of?

Your people are being killed daily and you keep quiet and watch as it happens hiding under the guise of the FG controls the security apparatus.

Can't these governors form their own security outfit, arm them and damn whatever consequences. Attack these land grabbing evil terrorists once and for all

This is not the time to fear escalation, people have been killed, land stolen, demographic changed for years. It warrants serious escalation and war.

Nigeria has been at war for years, are these useless governors not aware? angry are they waiting for these Fulani terrorists to fully control Benue, Nassarawa, Plateau before they wake up. They should learn from Taraba. angry

The government allowed it. If not they would have prevented the attack, take actions against those who renamed it. And dealt harshly with the invaders. But instead they will fold their hands and do nothing to this perpetrators and yet they will be telling the victims not to retaliate that it is criminal to take matters into their hands. Why to date it is indigenes that they arrest and not the fulani herdsmen that attacked is what beats my imagination. Why they arrest those who try to defend themselves is what I don't understand.
This renaming of sacked plateau villages has been going on for a long time since 2012 if I recall.
Imagine a one time President Buhari saying the attacks happen because the indigenes and the victims were not hospitable to herdsmen shows the government not only lack capacity but at other times deliberately allowed it.

The answer everyone is shying away from is that Eastern oil is massively important to them. They rather 'un-alive' everyone in the East and have the oil to themselves than properly secure the nation.

Because oil is liquid gold. And it doesn't run dry. So imagine if them allow Nigerianz to enjoy the full benefits?

What Eastern Oil? Please the majority of oil in Nigeria is found in the South south.
The South South is not the East.

Nigeria seems to be the only country in the world without government.

We have few people who have constituted themselves to occupy space.

Democracy is failing in Nigeria! Democracy has failed in Nigeria!

There has been a systematic failure, a subtle withdrawal of government from its responsibilities. From provision of infrastructures such as pipe born water, roads, housing, electricity, etc to education, Medicare, and now security. And still they keep creating inflation through their failed policies driving more to poverty.

A government that can't provide security, education and healthcare to it's citizens is no government and Nigeria happens to have no government.

It will still get worse because the foundation is wrong. There's no light at the end of the tunnel anywhere soon.
