Good day, fellas. Considering the hike in Fuel and Nepa bill coupled with epileptic power supply in Naija. Now, guys using Solar energy instead of Nepa or Gen. How do you guys do it? What type do you use? How do you manage it? I'm thinking of using solar but i would like you to share your experience.

It's splendid!

I use a 3.5kva 12v kartel inverter and 4 220AH tubular batteries I connected in parallel to make 880AH.

I power virtually every thing in the house including an lg inverter AC for most of the afternoons , an lg inverter fridge/freezer and a bona solar chest freezer.

I've been fully off grid for going to 6 years by May and I don't have any regrets at all.

The installation was done DIY with little touch by my electrician.

You are still thinking

Whilst you are thinking, ask about the budget and put the money in dollars

Then conclude your investigation and continue

Anyway, if you are in the South East, I can link you up with the guy that installed our own

It is a heavy investment, for 3-bedroom apartment, you may need minimum of 3 million to run it

Duplex, you should be talking close to 10 million.

Hmm!

That would be difficult because I upgraded over time to the present specification I mentioned.

I don't have any idea on the current prices of the items.

60A 150v epever mppt charge controller 6 years ago was 100k

Kartel inverter 3.5kva, 12v 2 years ago was about 200k ( if I remember correctly)

4 Tubular batteries 220A over a year ago at 145k each

10 Canadian solar 350w monocrystalline solar panels (second hand) at 40k each bought 6 years ago.

I hope so.

I don't reside in Lagos but I order my stuffs from there and they waybill to me in the North central.

I have been fortunate to deal with some honest sellers whom I have never met one on one.

If it is DIY, then 2m can do it.
- Budget about 1.5m for LifeP04 battery + charging unit combo. This kind of product is a combination of the best battery lithium iron phosphate iv battery & the charge controller + inverter
- use about 500k to purchase panels.

Then do the connection yourself. No need to call any electrician.
Everything is like plug and play

You are correct.

LifePo4 battery is the way to go.

My next upgrade will be in that direction.

Most reliable amongst them is PENIEL BUSINESS LINKS at alaba market.

You can Google him up
Ok,thanks I reside at Abia state but I do come to Lagos frequently for business

4 *220 ah battery . Parallel is not a good idea sha,
24 volts or 36 volts is more efficient

The inverter is a 12v 3.5kva.

I can't do otherwise. However, I get more longevity from this arrangement than when I was using a 24v 2.5 kva Felicity inverter.

Most original inverter manufacturers don't produce 3.5kva on 12v because is not efficient,
You can never see sukam or genius 3.5kva in 12 volts, maximum you can see on 12v is around 1kca 1.2kva etc,
Original 3.5 kva comes in 48 volts or thereabouts

This your claim get as I be.
Most times a 300 watt rated panel will give you 50 to 100w effective power. So your 10 panels will give you 500W to 1Kw instant power. That's 1 pass my neighbour generator at best. More often your effective power is about 700W. AC is at least 1 hp, solar chest freezer is 100w, inverter fridge is 200w. Plus lighting ,TV, fan etc. There is no way 10 solar panels can power everything in your house. You are either supplementing from grid or running your home appliances one at a time.

Do not give peeps false expectation. Your effective power will be 10 to 20% of your installed capacity.

This 3.5kva solar system with 4 220ah tubular batteries today will cost between 2.3m to 2.6million depending on the battery brand.

If you add the cost of those your inverter ac, freezer and fridge, it should be around 5million to 6million in today's price.

no.

3.5kva inverter today is 350,000 to 380k

80amps Charge controller around 150k

100amps changeover - 7,000

4 220ah Luminous tubular batteries - 340,000 x 4

10 350w used Canada mono solar panel - 75,000 x 10

Circuit breaker - 70,000

Cables - 100,000 - 150,000

Battery rack - 20,000

Installation labor - 60,000

Sum it up

I clearly stated in my post that the AC runs basically in the afternoons only.

There is no way an off grid solar user can be running all his appliances at the same time and for 24 hours continuously.

Lightening only come up at nights

My fans are Qasa standing fans, very energy efficient.X 6

I'm not a TV person but use about 3 hours for the kids (56W Lg tv)

Ironing is done in regimented fashion about 3 times a week and between 10am and 3pm

Pumping of water is also done at the peak of the sun using a 1hp electric pump.

Of course I go to work, same as my wife and kids (to school). The system is not always under stress as you are painting it except on weekends.

You are missing the fact. The solar panels are used to power the batteries. The actual output is coming from the inverter. so the inverter is 3.5 kVA. all those home appliances you listed are powered by the the 3.5 kVA inverter.

What you should be worrying about is how long the power supply last, due to the fact he doesn't have enough solar panels to power the batteries and than again there is every possible that he still use grid to change the battery.

This is not an easy decision to make. For a seamless transition where you can join the Green conversation and get startup ideas for free, I advise you to look up Fapemz thread on Nairaland. Get his number and buzz him on WhatsApp. He is very responsive and has a community for solar enthusiasts like us.

I did and started my solar journey cheaply and easily. The way I see and think energy now since I joined the community is not something I could have picked up from the street, but off people with similar energy needs, living in a chaotic Nigerian economy. I'm constantly thinking of ways to improve my setup. In there, Generator is hardly mentioned.
