I Have Never Been To An Airport by DiamondJLove: 8:31am On Feb 23 |
I am in my late twenties. It seems strange that I have never visited an airport. Sometimes i feel ashamed and never talk about it with anybody. I don't know if it's due to too much responsibilities on me. Who is in the same boat with me? How do you cope when people talk about visiting an airport? Do you pretend as if u have visited an airport? Do you say the truth and let people mock you? 38 Likes 5 Shares

Don't be ashamed of yourself because you haven't been to an airport. As long as you are not a bad person, only a fool will disrespect you just because you have not been to an airport. Human dignity does not depend on an airport experience. The airport setting is somehow similar to that of a good train station. What you will find so special is flying if you are to board a flight. In my JSS1, my school took me and my schoolmates on an excursion to an airport. We were not allowed to enter an airplane because of 911 attack. But years later, I travelled by air. The first flight I boarded was a local one. No family member or friend to guide me. I didn't know how and where to go when I entered the airport. I saw a place marked "Departure" (entrance) and took the route. I got to a scanning point and was searched and scanned. I asked a random worker on uniform a question and he pointed to the ticketing stand of the company I was to use. The rest was easy to detect and follow until boarding time. I saw my seat number on my ticket but didn't know how to locate the seat when I entered the plane. I didn't see number on any seat. I didn't know that the seat numbers are on the roof (should I call it ceiling?), not on the seats. I asked an air hostess who gave me a strange look before directing me to check the roof part above the seats. My first experience of turbulence (galloping in air 😀) scared me. Another funny experience was when a hostess pushing trolley around to pack wastes after the passengers had snacks got to my side, I myself trashed the wraps of my snacks into a waste container on the trolley and the hostess gave me a strange look. I then observed and noticed that other passengers were relaxed and she herself was picking the trashes from the trays, meaning I shouldn't have bothered myself to do the trashing myself. That was it. After then, I have travelled by air to 3 countries without difficulties in navigating through airports. One of the things I have learnt from travelling by air is that the bigger an airplane is, the more comfort the airplane offers. For most small airplanes, no enough space for your legs, and you have to stretch your hands to the ceiling to adjust AC, turn light off or on and to press call button. But in most of bigger airplanes, you do the operations on a touchscreen in your front, and you have more space for your legs. You can't (or let me say you are not allowed to) recline your seat in some small airplanes. 176 Likes 18 Shares |

I have met lots of Europeans who haven't left their country, and those who have, left by bus, since the EU is so logistically integrated. They haven't been to an airport. You don't need to feel ashamed. Don't qualify your self-worth with things like that. And if anybody looks down on you because you haven't been to an airport, then the person is an idiot. 169 Likes 10 Shares |

DiamondJLove: Material things shouldn't define you. I understand that Nigeria is a heavily materialized society, but you must resist that pressure. I won't judge you if you haven't swum before, or eat in a five-star restaurant, or entered a plane. I would be more interested to be the person that gives you that experience. I want to see your reaction and laugh at you (in a cheerful way) as you react when the plane takes off. The only thing I will judge you with is your character, not your material state. This is the way of the strong and refined individual. Anyone who ignores your character no matter how rotten, but respects you for your money, should stay away from such a person. The way Nigerians respect corrupt and wealthy politicians, if it's me, you will probably get a snub at best, or a punch at worse. I don't care about people's money, but character. 110 Likes 15 Shares |

You're ashamed because you have not been to an airport before ?.... Haa. Many nonsense things will put this generation into depression ooo. If you don't have any business going to an airport, why will you go there. When time will come for you to board an airplane,, you won't even know. Something will definitely take you there. It's not yet time..... There's nothing sweet in that jaree 27 Likes 4 Shares |

No shame in that. The first time I visited an airport was sometime in 2009, in my second year at the University. I was about 19 or so. I took myself to murtala Mohammed Airport for nothing sake. Just to see airplanes. I was so disappointed because I didn't see any airplane. I wasn't allowed beyond that first hall. But I saw heard announcements of plane arrivals. I saw people that looked fresh who might have just disembarked from those planes. I told myself that that could be me someday. Here I am. Traveling countries many years after 22 Likes 2 Shares |

Its no big deal Going to airport or flying in the air is not an achievement. Don't be pressured by anyone. My 1st time of flying by plane was in my late 30s and I did 4 flights in 3 weeks. There is time for everything in life. Relax 24 Likes 2 Shares |

DiamondJLove:The fact that you've never been to an airport doesn't make you a failure. I was never at an airport until I was 32 but I'm very successful regardless. The first experience was surreal and I have been to different airports after that but doesn't change the fact that I was relatively successful for some years yet never travelled by air until I was 32. There are privileges that being from a poor background will take from you but that shouldn't stop you. 16 Likes 2 Shares |
