Banditry is God’s punishment for the North — Archbishop Chukwuma
By Dennis Agbo

Emeritus Archbishop of Enugu Anglican Diocese, Most Rev Prof Emmanuel Chukwuma, who, just retired from priesthood, in an interview with Vanguard, said what is happening now in the whole of northern Nigeria – banditry, kidnappings etc – is God’s punishment for what they did to Igbo people.

What do you think is the reason General Yakubu Gowon is yet to say something about the Civil War?
Gowon is very apologetic and that was why he started ‘Nigeria Praise’ and we have to commend him for that. That ‘Nigeria Praise’ was to revive the spirit of the people back from the Civil War and to reconcile people back to God and to go on with one Nigeria.

Igbo people say they expect Gowon to tender an open apology and he has not done that…

Well, he has done it many times when he was doing ‘Nigeria Praise’; when he was moving around, he apologized but that’s not enough. The thing is that the Nigeria government should do that because the Nigeria Civil War dealt with us in Asaba, it was a real genocide and we’re asking for apology and more compensation as they do in other places.
What is happening now in the whole of northern Nigeria – the banditry, kidnappings etc – is God’s punishment for what they did to us, yes! And until they apologize and ask for forgiveness, at no time will this banditry, kidnapping and killings stop. The blood of innocent people is crying and that’s what you are seeing there. So until they apologize and make some restitution, the banditry and mayhem you have in the North will not stop.

What is your message to Nigeria as you bow out of priesthood?

Nigeria should be a country for all of us, not a country for just one person. There should be no segregation, nobody should be neglected, and there should be equal rights and justice. Equity and justice must prevail. The Igbo must be given the same opportunity to serve Nigeria and corruption must cease. We must stop deceit in government. Parliament has been turned into a self-centered composition; there should be no sycophancy in government. Something must be done to save Nigeria from calamity

Bishop, take it easy. What about the Unknown Gunmen in the East? What about the killings by herdsmen in Benue?

How can you say the terrorism in the North is a punishment when the perpetrators are safely getting richer through the terrorism and innocent Northerners are the ones getting killed? Does God punish innocent people for the sins of other people?

Even if the North apologizes to the East but maintains the northern political and religious ideologies, the terrorism will still continue. Therefore, the terrorism in the North is not because the North has not apologized to the East.

God is not human to scapegoat innocent Northerners. The banditry will mean a punishment if the perpetrators are the ones suffering it and the innocent ones are safe. The perpetrators and their own families are safe. So, it is not God's punishment to them.

Actually, what is happening in the North is simply an outcome of bad ideologies and bad practices. The situation in the North is not divinely inflicted on the North as a punishment.

Every action has a consequence. The banditry can be traced to religious and political decisions the North takes. That's why the masterminders are enjoying while innocent Northerners are suffering.

How these cursed arrogant people don't see the log in their own eyes but the strand of hair in people's eyes will forever be a mystery to me. Your region till date is where they kidnap people, take ransom from them and eat their flesh. The region is where people get forced to remain at home every Monday even though they have nothing to eat, even though they are terribly ill. IPOB has killed more people in the past few years than the North has experienced in a decade. The group is so deadly that no Leader speaks against them, otherwise, his head would be their next meal. You all live in fear every second but you don't see that? Your problem is always the north and South West. Funny enough, you will find much more of your people in these regions than you will find their people in your region.

He could be right, he could be wrong, but this is his own personal opinion and conviction, and he has a right to his opinion. But only God knows the reason, even though the so many innocent bloods shed in the North by Northern Muslim fanatics targeted at Igbos and Christians should always worry all well meaning Northerners, that's if they have a conscience at all.

But then, let's wait for Yoruba history re-writers to come and tell us how Igbos declared war against Nigeria.

They will tell you how Ojukwu invaded Yoruba land to take over Lagos.

Their lying elders that told them lies about the war will not tell them the imminent cause of the civil war which was the Northern pogroms against Igbos living in Northern Nigeria which the then Nigeria's Head of State Gowon failed to stop as Nigerian soldiers and security of Northern origin joined in killing civilian Igbos living in the North just because of crises rocking the military that didn't concern civilians.

They will not also tell their youths that back then, the fastest way to end war was to capture the national capital so that the President can surrender and call for ceasefire which was the reason Ojukwu moved most of his gallant Biafran soldiers towards Lagos to capture the capital of Nigeria so that the war could end fast while Nigeria allowed Biafra to go their way.

Their lying parents didn't also tell them how Gowon returned back to Nigeria to reject all the terms of agreement for peace that would have prevented the civil war, as signed by Gowon and Ojukwu in Aburi Ghana named "The Aburi Accord".

But their wicked parents told them how Igbos invaded Ore and killed Yorubas and wanted to take over Lagos

Their wicked fathers also lied to them that Ojukwu declared war against Nigeria whereas it was Gowon that declared a Police action to forcefully return Old Eastern Nigeria known then as Biafra back to Nigeria which led to the invasion of Biafra lands by Nigerian soldiers.

Their wicked fathers also lied to them about their bravery but never told them how Britain, Egypt, US, Russia, Saudi Arabia and many other world powers used Nigeria to destroy Biafra.

they will not live to apologize. We told them twenty years ago that they would turn swords against each other but they laughed over it. We are now telling them that in months time they will eat grass and the survivors of the plague will call for separation.
