60% Of Metered Customers Bypass Meters, Says TCN by EcoBrick: 6:38am On Mar 08

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says 60 percent of metered customers bypass meters.

Ali Ahmad, TCN’s general manager (GM) made this known at the National Institute of Physics’ webinar series 2.0 on Thursday.

The webinar series was titled “Policy, Regulatory and Technical Constraints in Achieving Energy Security in Nigeria: The Way Forward”.

Ahmad said out of an estimated population of 230 million, only 13,112,134 Nigerians are officially registered to use electricity.

According to him, only 44.23 percent of the 13.11 million customers have meters, highlighting the limited reach of metering in the country.

He also said with 230 million population, only 2.52 percent have been metered.

The GM said the meter bypass is contributing to the nation’s energy poverty, as the country is energy-poor and deficient in energy security.

According to Ahmad, energy security means having a reliable and affordable energy source, while energy poverty refers to the lack of access to good quality, affordable, and reliable energy.

“For a country to be truly independent politically and economically in the 21st century, is to have energy sovereignty and energy independence, and for the sovereignty and independence to be secured at all times and to be backed by the relevant geopolitics,” he said.

“In Nigeria, we have four types of energy poverty; the unserved, the underserved, the poor quality of supply and the served.

“Energy security in turn is the bedrock for the sustainable development and the attainment of it should leave no one, no citizen behind.”

Ahmad said Nigeria’s energy vulnerability is rooted in multiple factors, such as heavy reliance on gas, which limits diversification, and insufficient production capacity, leading to dependence on imports, and unreliable and high-cost gas supply, that further hinders energy security.

This is a complete lie. Bypassing is not as easy they made it seem. The consequences of being caught is very high even their staff don't want to get involved no matter how much they'll get paid.

Don't they hang meters on electric poles? How do the customers do it if meters are hung on poles?

For those quoting me, minus your sentiments and narrow-mindedness, nothing is wrong with my comment. My first sentence is a question. The second one which is also a question is conditional with the word, "if". I made the statement because meters are hung on electric poles in many parts of Enugu State where I stay. I didn't make any claim in the statement. I simply asked questions. It is appalling how many of you interpret things.

Quite true. However, it can't be up to 60%.

There are some coded electricians that can alter the operations of some of those meters. However, they would not do it for every and anybody. It's highly coded.
I know someone in particular, morning and night his air conditioning units are always on. In fact, most times even with no one at home, once there's power from the grid, you will hear both outer units working full blast.

That's not 100% correct. Bypass is only possible with the old phcn prepaid metres. Modern metres have sensors installed in them making it impossible to bypass as it will trigger an alarm that is very high and disturbing immediately it is tampered with.

Who will teach me how to bypass those meters?
Re: 60% Of Metered Customers Bypass Meters, Says TCN by mrmayormedia: 7:08am On Mar 08
TCN should acknowledge that Nigerians without meters often pay for darkness and receive exorbitant bills. It is expected that they will bypass the system after being issued meters because of the accumulated bills. You cheat, I cheat.

Additionally, some metered customers are placed on the expensive Band A tariff (promising 20+ hours of supply) without receiving the promised electricity. The expectation that they shouldn't bypass meters is unreasonable.

So electricity companies can cheat us, but we can't retaliate because the government protects their interests

Do they expect all Nigerians to be honest & not bypass their meters.
Though it may not be as high as 60% but that's a problem they have to deal with, by installing meters on top of poles, and by imposing severe penalties on those caught bypassing their meters.
