When Did Corruption Start In Nigeria? by chukwuebuka65(m): 1:33pm On Mar 13 |
It’s no longer news that corruption has eaten deep into the root of the Nigerian society. But I always wondered how and when corruption crept into society, and why it continued to grow to this level and is still growing. Are there factors peculiar to the Nigeria community that has fueled its growth? If there is , what are those factors and how do we tackle it? We cannot rid our society of this plague that has befallen us without answering the above questions. Who introduced corruption to Nigeria? |

Corruption in governance is as old as governance itself! Even during the colonial gov't there was corruption, and it will continue for as long as man exists! The thing is to try and mitigate the incidence of corruption by having strong institutions and adhering to the rule of law! 11 Likes |

portplus: Trust Nigerians to always elevate the negative to 'the next level'! Why couldn't we elevate the practice of democracy and the parliamentary system of gov't to a higher level when the Brits left in 1960!? Our achilles heel is our ethno-religious heterogenous nature, and this prevents us all from pulling in the same direction such that things other countries find easy to achieve, Nigeria will struggle to even start! 10 Likes |

Did you watch icheoku on nta in the 80s? That was the precussor to the high level sleaze currently transpiring in nigeria. In icheoku, an igbo comedy/drama series set in early colonial eastern Nigeria, the court clerk used his position to swindle both petitioners and plaintives, by excessively exaggerating court requirements. Sometimes, these peasants had to borrow to cover such mind boggling expenses. Corruption in nigeria was a colonial thing. Corruption started 4 Likes |

portplus: I would love hear more about the bolded if you don’t mind. About our people taking it to another level, could it be poverty, lack of education, nepotism ? If poverty, then we are screwed because we are getting poorer day by day. If lack of education, how do we go about educating the masses on the need to kill this corruption? If nepotism , then we need to push for more powers to the states so states and local governments can be as independent as possible . |

LOVEALAIGBO: This your submission makes sense. I have always thought about it. That means we have the British to blame for our present predicament for amalgamating the northern and southern part of this country 1 Like |

chukwuebuka65:Nepotism...Yes. Poverty....No (There are very highly placed civil servants and some comfortable people working in the private sector with sense of entitlement....they won't do their job without "collecting something"). For instance, if you want to fast track your request(s) in some places; as little as 1k can make a lot of difference. It is so sad.... Am I guilty?...Yes....I have had to bribe(or show "appreciation" to facilitate some request(s) both in the civil service and private organizations. |

Judas betrayed Jesus over some money! Corruption right there. If you go back in time to the 16th century, you may find that some people in leadership positions received bribes to sell their people into slavery Point is, corruption has always been there, it just keeps getting worse because when people don’t get punished, they get more emboldened 2 Likes |

portplus: Wrong. Corruption REDUCED after the British left. They stole 95% of our earnings. Today, corruption eats up maximum 30% of our earnings. That is why you can see development everywhere around you today, unlike the big bush that was 1950s Nigeria. |

The truth is, corruption is part of our culture and traditions. The more corruption dies, the more our tradition and culture dies. |
