To what will someone say Foden is a better talent than Kane at 23 yrs old?

Kane was so exceptional that he was tagged one season wonder in his first full season.

Playing in Totham and breaking records (with injury that do take him out at least 1 month every season)

Android17 Eruditor, can argue that Garri is made from groundnuts and post 100,000 words to defend it.

I still dey reason this statement, wallahi

The same Rooney that delivered 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 games (played only 22 minutes in the fifth) and was named in the team of the tournament despite not featuring beyond the QF at Euro 2004 at the age of 18.

A lot of his teammates believe that, had he stayed fit, they'd have gone on to win the whole thing.

Ah

Chief afrodoc2 why do you think a lot of players who've been touted as superstars at youth level in the English game sputter out so quickly and in some cases, go on to achieve relatively little?

See Nile Ranger and Ravel Morrison.

Lots of people claim Joe Cole was the best player they saw live at youth level. Then there's Owen, more recently Odoi and Sancho etc... Even Rooney himself, despite being the record goalscorer for England and Manyoo and with his trophy haul, still isn't seen by some people as having achieved all the success he could have and is repeatedly passed over in all time PL XIs.

I think there are varying reasons for youngsters not living up to the superstar expectations at senior level.

Some of them due to injuries, some were unfortunate to be in the wrong team where are not the right fit , some of them just get disoriented struggling with disciplinary issues and then u have those whose coaches want them to play a totally different pattern of football from what they played as youngsters when they were touted as potential world class palyers.

I think there's no one reason that fits all players that failed to live up to expectation.

Its not just in England alone, Its all over the world. Transitioning from a precocious youth to a professional is tough I say less than 10% of players who repped in U17 make it into senior team and its not due to age cheats. Its physical and its also mental

I remember hyped youths like Marko Marin, Samel Yesid, Sinama Pongolle, Le Tallec
I follow German football and many players who have been rumored to be world beaters ended up folding. Sinan Kurt, Moritz Leitner, Max Beister, Holtby, Deniz Naki, Savio Nsereko, even Deisler Gotze are the popular ones. Some of them when you google them and where they played or are playing later in their career its embarrassing

The Toni Kroos set in U17, Only Kroos made it to the high level. At below teenage years your physical attributes like being bigger, being faster will easily stand you out but as everyone get into their 20s, they catch up physically and neutralize all the advantages e.g a player like Lukaku was bullying 15, 16yr olds for fun until he grew older and everyone bulked up and caught up with him physically, so the huge advantage he had reduced

Just google any year the "stars of the future" in any certain year less than 20% of them are still relevant 10yrs later

E.g This is the squad for the 2013 U21 Euro. like 10yrs later, how many of them can you say have reached the peak of football. Not just England but all other countries too

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_UEFA_European_Under-21_Championship_squads

Just like many fields some people develop later and some burst out of the blocks as great talents.. There are some people who you went to secondary school who you taught will be superstars but they fizzled out, and some who were above average and later became superstars

1) Too much pressure being placed on the young players leading to either physical or mental burnout.

A good example is comparing what happened to Rooney and Messi as teenagers. In 2004 Rooney as an 18yr old was the saviour for England and when he got injured England got bundled out of the Euros. 2 years later Messi as a 19yr old was still considered a squad player by the Argentine manager at the 2006 World Cup and kept on the bench in a knockout situation.
It was at this same World Cup that rather than allow Rooney to heal from a broken foot, England kept him in an oxygen tent to ensure he made the tournament. I believe that was where Rooney's decline started. Owen had the same problem of being played through injury after injury and by 22-23 he was done.

2) Poor lifestyle choices. Smoking, drinking, and poor diet tend to be more prevalent amongst English players than continental players. Rooney, Wilshere, Joey Barton are good examples of this.

3) A good number of the players (especially the black ones) are still tied to the streets and either do not really love the game as they should or have other things distracting them. Ravel and Nile Ranger are extreme examples. Generally speaking, if you get into the sport just to escape the hood, what is your motivation after you make your millions. This is Sancho's problem.

Hudson Odoi had a career altering injury, so it is difficult to know how his career would have turned out.

4) Some of them are just overhyped and not as good as advertised. The English Press is senseless in the way they raise players up to be gods and demigods, and pile ridiculous amount of pressure on them. I just watched them interview the man who coached Mainoo as a 4yr old.

You're still buttressing my point. grin

All these examples you gave, they're all spines/core players in their clubs and I mean top clubs.

Zidane(Madrid)/Henry(arsenal)— both are core players in top club not just in one season

Xavi(Barca)/ Fabregas (arsenal)— both are core players in top club not just in one season

And so on.

In this England squad, Kane(Tottenham/Bayern), Bellingham (Dortmund/Madrid) and Saka (arsenal) are real core players in their respective clubs. So it's natural for any coach to build his team around any of them.

Foden(until this season) wasn't a core player. While it's not his fault due to the presence of Kdb, how do you expect a national team coach to build his team around him?
They are real core players in teams that win less than City and whose core players are not as good as City's core man?

Will any team build around Jude over KDB and not be treated like a useless team?

Bear in mind, Mou was going to build Barca around Ronaldinho and leave Messi as a winger. How would Messi's career have turned out if that was the case?

For context, look for Messi's performances when he was not the core man - like PSG. What did the French Press think about Almighty Messi?

There is a reason I am selective about people I engage.

Do you know transfermrkt is also indicating different positions for Foden than I had even mentioned like LM and RM? Does that not mean Foden plays 7 positions now or I can ignore that one for Foden since it does not help your illogic?

LooL.

Foden couldn’t dislodge Riyad Mahrez, Rahim Sterling and even Bernardo Silva who isn’t a proper winger. He just looks lost in that English squad.

I’m waiting to see what Southgate will cook up this summer tho.

If you are referring to me I said Rooney isn't and has never been a FAR FAR superior talent to Foden. I have always put them on equal footing. Nobody will ignore KDB or Haaland to build around Rooney based on a seriatim.

No manager that wins as much as Pep will do that. SAF built around CR7 vs Rooney. Even though Rooney showed more promise at a younger age. A wise manager builds around who can more than likely guarantee winning. Benzema vs CR7 etc.

What did Dortmund win with Haaland out and the team built around Jude? Not directed at you. I'm just laughing for future sake.

List all individual awards won by your Foden before clocking 24. Let's compare with Kane's.

1 England's player of the year award sinks all the local govt awards Foden got.

He cannot is what I am saying. He has to be VG (very good) enough to add it in his repertoire. Messi has scored headed goals - as has Haaland but nobody will pen it down as a "skill" they have because of its ineffectuality.

Otherwise I can claim that Alvarez is also a midfielder because Pep has played him there few times. He is not because even though he may have scored a goal or 2 playing from there- he does not play it very well enough to add it to his positions.

Read. Slowly.

LOL.

An award won by Kalvin Phillips and Raheem Sterling? That award? The one you can get with no recognized competition within a year - just friendlies with ninnies?

But winning a world cup at U-17 for your country as the best player of the whole tournament is everything to sneeze at?

What if 3 of those 5 goals came via a spot kick? Did your data show you that?

How does your data account for playing that position adequately? Goals? You mean like Julian Alvarez having almost double digit assists this season playing mostly from midfield meaning he does it adequately?

Critical thinking should be a major degree on its own.

The discussion is talent level. Foden still has ways to go to meet Rooney's accomplishments.

Let me break it down for you. By 2005 Ronaldinho was convinced that he was not the most talented player at Barca - Messi was yet Rijkaard could not see it right?

Did Messi have 2 WPOTY awards or Ballon dors @ the time? No. Yet Ronaldinho knew that Messi's talent superceded his.

Talent does not always correlate with accomplishments. Neymar is more talented than any version of Mbappe. But Mbappe has a world cup and looks like he will accomplish more.
