AK481: That private blood bank buys blood from general hospitals who mandates that husbands or relatives of pregnant women donate blood as a prerequisite for antenatal registration. When I was pregnant withy first child, my husband was made to donate blood at the GH we registered in and I ended up not giving birth there meaning we've dashed them the blood. When someone I know gave birth at GH and had to be transfused with blood, she said they had to buy blood. I asked how come, didn't her husband donate blood? She said they donated but they were still charged. This was as far back as 2011/2012. They need to explain to us what they do with the thousands of pints they collect from patients who don't eventually use it. 4 Likes |

tonygalaxy: Wow! This is so painful! That's why I'm so terrified of public hospitals, they're too heartless! Why even request for 2 pints of blood even they know they're still going to make the patients buy it when needed? And when you don't eventually use the donated bloid, they don't compensate you in anyway. 1 Like |

nlfpmod:Blood is never available because people do not donate blood. Simple! Before any of you start castigating LASUTH, if you are an able-bodied young man. Have you donated blood VOLUNTARILY before? Not because your wife is about to deliver, or because your relatives are going for surgery. As long as people don't donate blood VOLUNTARILY, demand for blood will always be more than supply. When blood is donated by a relative, it is screened to be free from diseases like hepatitis B and C, syphilis and HIV. A lot of people found out they had hepatitis B and HIV when they donated blood. Infected ones like that will be thrown away leaving less for everyone. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Iamzik: The payment is for screening not the blood you are getting. Whether it is donated in advance or at the point it's required you will pay for the blood gotten. Blood issues can be one big wahala in general hospitals. And people hardly donate, blood is not like drugs one can buy there has to be a supply. Once no supply it will be scarce hence the wahala we have here and there. Even if the person has money if there's no blood what will happen? |

DrFunmisticGlow: How will you feel if after donating, then it was sold to someone else and you had to buy again . That is what this topic is about. Let's abandon voluntary donation drive for now because that one too is a scam. The blood gotten from voluntary donor can also be sold to someone else. 2 Likes |

We as citizens are the most vile, wicked and inconsiderate set of people on earth. Iam sure those buffoons will join the band wagon to chorus "our leaders are corrupt" 2 Likes |

The bitter truth is Nigeria as a whole is a fraud. Our leaders and politicians, banks/ financial institutions, school admission boards or bodies, tha schools itself, mobile service providers, hospitals, NEPA/ electricity providers, marriages, fuel filling stations, etc ia all fraud and scams. I even forgot to name religious organizations. So don't be amazed when you see all these scams.. |

Too bad. Talk of blood money, here you have it. If our system is not looking for Fisayo, I would've said they swing into action and do the needful. As it is, only the incorruptible nature waits for all perpetrators and collaborators. |

@OP, thanks for posting this. The time I experienced this personally, I was too depressed to speak about it. At the state general hospital in ilorin, blood business has become a cool business. My daughter was referred their in January and needed blood transfusion, they said they could get me a pint for 13k if I don't want to donate or can't find anyone to donate for here. While negotiating my options, a woman whose daughter had just had a surgery related to childbirth came to them to demand refund for unused pint out of the two she was forced to buy to cover some other bills, they refused vehemently claiming that the unused has been kept in the bank and I was there begging for blood from the bank which they refused. I later donated a pint of blood. When the transfusion was done, my daughter only took very small part and the much bigger rest was taking away. I angrily asked why didn't they draw just the quantity they needed they said 1 pint was the standard. I then placed a curse on whoever monetize my blood. Walking round the hospital, you will see all these piggy banks with inscriptions soliciting for donations for indigent patients, yet I had causes to bail people whose bills required as little as 100 naira from the pharmacy. The fraud going on in government-owned hospital is a bigger brother to the ones we see at police stations that we complain about. Only God will save us. 2 Likes |

BigDawsNet:I experienced same shit, these was even government hospital where blood is "FREE" These guys will tell you blood is not available, one will corner and said blood is available at other hospital. You pay 25k for it and 4k for transportation.... They'll follow backdoor and bring the suppose blood that wasn't available and claimed it was outsource. Nigerian value money than life and reputation 3 Likes |

DrFunmisticGlow: What you fail to understand here is not voluntary blood donation, it is those who donate blood and don't get it and have to pay for it. What you are talking about is different and gaslighting people to donate blood. That can never work. You know that not all bloof is eligible even after screening and there is a racket around this donation. It is said that if you donate blood in Lagos, you and your family can get it FREE. Don't let me get to LSBTS because there is a law on this topic. I can't post links because of the bot but let me share screenshots 2 Likes 1 Share

Catsofnaija: Voluntary they get it but it must be sold... I remember when my wife put to bed She's A- while am A + so I have to look for donor or buy.... after the birth, no blood was used and then I ask where is the blood I donate they cajole me to let that go since my wife and kid are okay, me I give them a warning that if the blood is giving to anybody and that person pay again for it the blood will misbehave on such patient but if they give the person free of charge then everything will be normal |

I have always complained here about the rots in our healthcare system, but Nigerians have this attitude of not caring about a problem until they become the victims of that problem. To tackle the rots in our healthcare system, we need to start by overhauling the leadership of the system. There are professional healthcare administrators who manage the hospitals in sane countries and that is why the system is better over there. Let's toe the same path here and you'll see how the system gets transformed for good. 1 Like 1 Share |
