raumdeuter:I think this is more in sticking with tradition and less about her actually getting married to the guy for real. In some traditions, this is done with some very young guy (usually a child) within the family of the deceased husband. |

Theflint1: Na fooolish tradition wey no make sense . Although I know the news is false and the publisher will soon be on his heels for fabricating this kind fake news about Betty the fiery queen . |

BlueRayDick:It's not harmful tradition, doesn't mean the woman can't remarry if she so desires. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 6:53am On Apr 04 |
BlueRayDick: Even market women wey dey hawk sef do not observe this part of tradition. Na Betty wey get money and go school, na him dem go dey pass around like the girl wey Shallipopi sing about? It just has to be fake news... |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by TrebleChamp(m): 7:05am On Apr 04 |
BlueRayDick:The tradition exist in my village, it may not make sense to you (even me) but it is a tradition that has existed for long. Although where i am from, it is not compulsory for the widow to re-marry the late husbands family member. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 7:07am On Apr 04 |
Theflint1: A tradition that compels u to remarry from ur late husband's family is not only harmful but evil. So the woman is expected to mate with the borther of her late husband whom she's come to see as her own brother ? Even the mental health aspect of it is enough for it to be abolished . |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 7:14am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: I know the tradition exists but I think it's obnoxious in this age and time. It's a tradition that tramples on the rights of the women folk. Okay why didn't they balance it off and allow a widower to pick a new wife from his late wife's family ? |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by TrebleChamp(m): 7:32am On Apr 04 |
BlueRayDick:True if the women are compelled into remarrying husband relatives, good thing is it is not compulsory where i am from. A lot of obnoxious tradition scattered across the country, chief imo being the one that compels a widow to drink water used in bathing her late husbands corpse. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 7:35am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: What year did this happen last? My grandfather died when i was a kid, and my grandmother was not compelled to drink any bathwater And they are both Imo. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by joseph1832(m): 7:44am On Apr 04 |
Theflint1:I dont understand this tradition. The wfes's family are the ones who handed Betty over to her dead husband's younger brother to be remarried? How feasible is that or am I missing something? |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 7:45am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: Baba, making it optional is a trap in itself; it's a manipulative scheme. If the woman decides not to marry the late husband's male relative; the late husband's family will simply see her as evil and this hate will transcend down to the society at large. A woman widow will have no choice but to succumb to the emotional blackmail except she's a really really strong-willed woman who is determined to damn all consequences. Like u agreed with me, there are just so many obnoxious traditions that should be trashed 1 Like 1 Share |

izzou: One lady in my office lost her husband a few years back. They definitely shaved her head. I am not 100% sure about the bathwater. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 8:04am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: This is oddly an old Yoruba tradition too. Apparently Awolowos dad who was rich died when he was young. The way he described it - the moment his dad died they were instantly destitute. The brothers shared all the man's property. All 10 year old awo got was his dad's shirt because they knew he was the dads favorite child. One of the brothers then wanted to go the whole hog and inherit awos mum and that is where she pushed back. 1 Like |

Maybe I'm not too familiar with how it plays in the South East, but from what I've heard about this particular custom it's not as deep as is being portrayed here...the one I've heard it's usually a male child they "remarry" the woman to, so it's more in saying you're still part of us, and less in saying person X (adult male) would continue where our son stopped, and the traditionao rite in question does not prevent the woman from marrying if she so desires. |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 8:08am On Apr 04 |
GloriousGbola: I cannot argue with what you know, but a lot of things have changed in tradition. People actually tend to swallow what Nollywood paints, but these stuffs happened way way back. One of the factors that retired some of these traditions is religion (Christianity). I have never seen this tradition of drinking bathwater except in movies and stories. From family to friends, nobody don see that thing. Most of these stuffs are retired. Even the remarrying of a widow is very outdated. A man managing with his wife and kids, will suddenly carry another woman with her kids to marry? Even the Betty story seems like a lie, because it is not her family that would do that. It is Akeredolu's family. 1 Like 1 Share |

izzou:I know an ex girlfriend from Anambra whose elder sister was put through that horrible experience, it was like 10years ago though. But i believe this and many other horrible traditions are still being practiced in many tribes in the Country. Just like how they said Osu Caste tradition has been abolished but a friend of mine was denied the chance to marry is beautiful girlfriend, because she is a Osu from Enugu State. I blamed (scolded self) him though for accepting his families stand on the matter.. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 8:18am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: Like i said, i only hear, hear, hear... I have never experienced it as an Igbo. I have lost my dad, aunts, uncles, and so on, and never did i see anybody drink it I even started this year with a burial in Imo, and nobody drank anything. Maybe others who are Igbos can share their personal experiences, but i have never seen it happen |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by TrebleChamp(m): 8:24am On Apr 04 |
izzou:You will be amazed with what some tribes practice as tradition in this country till this day. In some parts of Edo and Delta State, a married woman cannot cheat on her husband. Any woman that does will die a slow and painful death, yet married men can cheat on their wives and nothing happens. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 8:26am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: I am not saying tradition is gone oh. I am saying some parts that we no are almost non-existent. |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 8:36am On Apr 04 |
TrebleChamp: Na poverty still dey make those kind culture exist in some parts of the country . U will notice that people who hail from that same part of the country who are very much well-to-do and most likely living in the city would not even consider such traditions when a family member dies. It's only families domiciled in the village with struggling relatives that keep such obnoxious traditions alive . Imagine when Wunmi Obe's brother ( the son of Chief Olu Aboderin the founder of punch newspapers) who was married to Stella Damasus died ; make person come dey tell Stella Damasus that she must marry one of her husband's relatives.
