GrammarNazi1:Nigerian tribal customs tend to overlap than not. Gloriousgbola mentioned it being an old Yoruba custom as well, and the one I'm referring to, where the woman is "married" to a child from the deceased husbands family is practiced by certain tribes in Edo State, I'm sure there's several other customs in Nigeria that would have variants of this. |

It's humans that create cultures and traditions, not any divine entity. Good elements of culture and traditions such as compassionate science, wise sayings and proverbs that teach morality, and other beneficial traditions need to be promoted. However, the bad ones such as religion, slavery, caste system, and forcing/coercing widows to remarry within the late husband's family, etc., should be abolished because they do more harm than good overall, especially in modern times. Humans create all cultures and traditions in the world, not God. God is a man-made construct. Every culture around the world has its good and bad aspects. It's always good to promote good aspects of one's culture and traditions and condemn the bad elements. |

Itsrm:Bro that tradition is not a ruse ooh, plus Tonto Dike married a Yoruba Man. I think it only affect women who did traditional marriage with Isoko/Urhobo/Benin men, I don't know for court or church wedding sha. Why do you think Isreal DMW has been boasting that his ex-wife Sheila cannot sleep with another man. The tradition (curse) may be broken if the woman returns the bride price and the husband accept it. 2 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Melvyn11: 10:15am On Apr 04 |
* Shaving the woman's hair is just a mourning ritual for the late husband. Nothing barbaric about it *Drinking the water use to bath the late husband only happens when the woman is suspected to have an hand in the husband's death. If she is involved it's believe she will start confessing. Its hardly even practiced again. * Passing the widow to the brother is so that she can have someone take care of her and the children. Its basically telling the brother that he is now responsible for his late brother's wife and children. Something you should realize is that all these culture was from a time when women didn't really do much to provide for the home so a man presence is needed. 7 Likes |
