loffyloffy:There are also a lot of variables that favour the Discos in Nigeria that do not occur in Canada. In Calgary, nobody pays for transformer installation and repairs of fault. Also, there is no one on estimated billing and the power consumption for residential areas is not billed as same with industrial areas. While I agree only 15% is to be captured in principle, if you look at the average monthly rate that N225 amounts to vis a vis the minimum wage, you will see a huge distortion. At the rate of a unit per hour consumption, the average customer will spend N135k on electricity a month with the minimum wage at 30k. Even if the minimum wage is increased, do you seriously believe it will be increased to such a point that someone on minimum wage will be able to afford to spend N135k on electricity? When you add the cost of transport and food that;s been going out of range lately, you will realize that most of these things being pilled on Nigerians are not realistic. |

004gist: Bros that your analogy with SA makes no sense at all. What is purchasing power of an average south African what is their CPI and what is their income per capita compared to Nigeria. You guys should stop defending rubbish. 1 Like |

deji17: Oga you are a very wicked man. You want to use high cost of housing in Canada to justify the bull shit this Nigerian government is doing. And who told you advanced nations do not provide some form of subsidy. In Dublin there is transportation subsidy even in UK there is some form of energy subsidy. Make una fear God in supporting rubbish. This is the height of selfishness. God will strike you down one day. 1 Like |

It's obvious that you are one of the fundamental problems of Nigeria.I am sure where you live is not within Band A to F.So you won't understand the implications of the charges. There are houses in Lekki phase one that pay 1.5 million a month for electricity in the former regime.Only God knows how much. A comparison is done why not counter the data with factual points instead to throw accusing fingers just to defend your principal. helinues: |

helinues:The same way it is better to commission an unfinished project such as Aba Power and Dangote refinery , then after commissioning they will now complete it? The way we reason in this Nigeria ehh! It is well. Why charge for what u don't have talk more of supplying? The most annoying part is Nigeria selling electricity to neighbouring country when the masses are not having same. |

Let the government first make the investment on electricity, provide the infrastructures before increasing tariff not collecting money from customers to make investment. That's climbing the tree from the top. |

Kukutente23:The bolded is not factual. People pay for transformer install. The developers would have paid for it when the subdivision or condo, or whatever type of housing is being built. People also living on outskirt of the city pay for individual installation, but no one pays for repair. Bills are estimated as well but they adjust once a reading is obtained. |

This your comparison can’t fly at all. It’s a layman’s comparison. You can ask economists and sociologists. I don’t want to say more than that because this is like comparing a walnut to Apple. |

Goodvibes007: Don’t mind him. There’s economy of scale out there which put them at an advantage of mass-producing (electricity and its derivatives) at more cheaper prices. He could have compared Nigeria with a similar country that has similar economic indices. Assuming he is writing this on a research for a supervisor, he would have thought he had carried out a good research. |

Spuggie:The only people that can detect stealing is the disco themselves. They may need to operate an anti stealing department, and government law enforcement needs to come hard on those stealing power, like 10 years imprisonment for a start. The below is from South Africa.

Believeintruth:Apart from this emotional blackmail that some Nigerians are known for, what is the sense in this? Is Dublin subsidizing their Education, healthcare and other things too? You get many Public services almost for free, yet to pay for it will result into abuses, curses etc as if abuses and curses will provide necessary development. The increase in electric tariff only affects a certain category called Tier A... 1 Like 1 Share |

Kukutente23:Guy. I worked in this industry and currently working in it but in capital projects in that same Canada. People pay via new connect or customer connect services. Because you just moved into a home already built does not mean the power installation had not been paid for by someone else e.g. developer. |
