They only cram books in Nigeria. I studied abroad, and I just shook my head. Do you know the NMR at my college alone was half a million dollars...it can tell you the chemical composition of compounds so you can create and discover new compounds and bondings. How can Nigeria afford a machine that is now N60 billion....there is a reason why education is super expensive..and there is a reason they recruit the best of the best too...they need to justify all these expenses lol. Naija...we are not ready yet.

Okay okay

Why does this country continue to pay foreign companies for construction projects in Nigeria
Am I missing something?
Are the engineering students or graduates in Nigeria not capable to do these constructions from start to finish
In 2024!!! ๐Ÿ˜ถ

FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike on Friday, April 5th, undertook a tour of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit scheme also known as the Abuja Metro line, and rode on the train from the city center to the Abuja Airport.

The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the quality of work and commended the contractor while revealing that the project was one of those scheduled to be commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May

Whatever is good is good. This is good... Wike is doing well.

What you should be talking about is that a local content clause be added to the contract between Nigeria and the companies doing the jobs so that knowledge transfer can happen hence producing a generation of Nigerian engineers that can carry out similar jobs in the future and also maintain these ones. Don't be the ones badmouthing your graduates who end up running abroad and getting celebrated.

You agains corroborated my observations.

Why do our graduates need to run abroad to be celebrated?

Why is it that graduates from our universities don't discover and formulate medications that can treat malaria and schistosomiasis which are our local health problems?

Why are our Engineers unable to produce communications gadgets or handles heavy construction works?

Universities in the USA, UK and Western European countries are set up to solve problems in their environments but Universities in Nigeria evolved as mirror images of these foreign institutions without conscious efforts to make them produce solutions to problems of Nigeria.

We need to overhaul and redesign our educational institutions to meet our peculiarities.

Of course they are not. Graduates with no adequate field exposure. University design courses with no partnership with engineering companies, no collaboration whatsoever. It is just about textbook

No they are not. An auto engineer in Nigeria is not properly trained and like you and I he is looking for mechanic.

They come out of uni with almost zero practical skills and waiting to be signing paper.

Yet he was fixated at building overhead bridges on one stretch of road.

I am happy he is performing as minister.

His outing as governor of Rivers state was abysmal. It was more of showmanship without real substance. Under his watch Rivers state became no 1 in multidimensional poverty in the South South region.

Yeah you are right, it was showmanship, that project should be looked into and completed, those are the issues the assembly should be looking into and working with the governor to see how that project and others abandoned are given adequate attention and completed

What did I corroborate? Graduates from other countries don't build metrolines, reputable companies do! There is no country anywhere in the world where graduates jump out of school and start building metrolines! However, there in a rich culture of knowledge transfer and capacity building which many of your graduates who "run" to those countries gain from. Some African countries don't tolerate Chinese and other foreign companies coming to carry out construction projects without using their country men. And foreign companies invest a fortune in building the capacity of their employees as opposed to the miserly attitude of hiring graduates without any training and expecting them to perform miracles because they are graduates which is common place here. Maybe we should take a queue from there. Don't make the habit of bashing anything Nigerian your favorite past time.

something they have not finished, you're saying it "didnt" benefit everybody. Just wait for it to be completed now, and know if it will benefit plenty people.
ok you have a point, do you live in Abuja?

Car option
Or instead of getting to beggar 800 then 200 to Maitama on a road, which is total of 1000 without any waiting time.

Train option
I will enter 500 to airport junction 400 with bike to the train station wait till train arrives then pay 500 to get to central area pay another 500 (assuming I see along otherwise it's going be drop) to get to my office. Total 1900.

Relocation option
Or maybe I should uproot my house and plant it close to the station then shift my office to central area just because I want to be using train.

This applies to people who live in popular places like kubwa, lugbe etc. you can't route train through zero populated areas and expect people to clap for you, will live in Abuja we know Abuja.

You are still missing the points:

It is not that graduates build Metrolines immediately after graduation or not but the ways the institutions were designed was not to produce solutions to Nigerian's problems. This isn't just about universities but the whole educational system.

The problem isn't just limited to the Educational Institutions but also the Policy makers in the Government and private sector.

In a Semi-Urban State like Kogi, Nassarawa and Ekiti, Dissertations done by Final Year Students are gathering dusts on shelves when they should be given tasks to do, contribute to the development of their environments and then write Dissertations based on their experiences or write some Dissertations that directly tackle the problems in their environments. The system, need not look like what is obtainable in Yale, Oxford or London.

That was how I felt about the Kaduna - Abuja(kubwa) rail, but it didn't turn out so, most people don't even consider it as an option when they want to travel, my boss travel Kaduna -abuja route fortnightly he doesn't even consider rail as option he use road despite the risk. Oh did I just say risk!? Even the train is not safe.
