The word "cheap" is relative.

Nevertheless, Ford is not for the Nigerian market because the demand for Ford cars is extremely low, and second hand value is abysmally discouraging! Nigerians would prefer a Toyota or at least a Honda. Whereas, Ford isn't a bad car. It's as strong and as reliable as any other car if well maintained. Replacement parts might not be as commonly found as its Toyota counterparts, but are also not as expensive as often rumoured!

I drove a Ford Escape for 10years before selling it recently. I only changed alternator twice, and Airconditioning system worked on about three times - which is a common problem with most cars used in Nigeria as we tend to have our ACs switched on veey often due to the hot weather. The car had no faults whatsoever and buyer was pleased to have bought it. He still drives it around without fixing anything.

From my experience using a Ford Escape, I'ld say it's a good car! ..and would recommend one anyday and anytime.

I hardly respond to questions like this on Nairaland because I believe that experiences differ significantly and depends on a lot of other factors! So, I dedicate this response to my Ford Escape (2005).

Buy one, use it well by maintaining it adequately, and thank me later.

:DNigerians are used to Japanise because of lack of mechanics. Also availability of parts. The majority of mechanics in this country are deadbrain illiterate mostly straight out from the village. They learnt the work from also their likes with old school experience mentality.

Did you use the i4 or v6 model?
I like the newer escapes from 2012 but seems the turbo engine Will be a pain.

Some earlier models are, quite honestly, junk. The late 00's Edge and Focus, for example. That led to a poor reputation, which in turn has led to low demand.

Funny, statistics also show that most financially prudent or budget conscious American car buyer in America will choose a Japmobile like Hondas and Toyotas over a Ford product grin
