Why is it that Nigerian refineries don't refine PMS? What is so special about PMS that we don't refine it yet?

If we can surpass OPEC crude oil quota and supply the excess to meet our local demands and refine PMS in Nigeria, I don't see why this country should be spending so much to subsidize petroleum products.

Because for decades, subsidy, and the price controls inherent in subsides, made domestic refining unprofitable.

We went from 400000 bpd capacity in 1987 to 92000 in 2012 to 6000 in 2019.

Venezuela in roughly the same period had their largest refinery go from 900000bpd to 100000bpd. Subsides.

People receiving the subsidy will do everything possible to make sure the refinery doesn’t work, every session in this govt preferred to take bribes to benefit his household than to see millions of Nigeria enjoy.

Still wonder why Dangote is not refining petrol

Them use diesel swear for am

Useless country governed by a desperate certificate forger
If he refines PMS, who will pay him for the differential?
If he sells it at the international market price which could be as high as 900 to 1100naira, which marketer will want to go buy?

So he will only stick to refining diesel n jet fuel that is fully deregulated...
Pms still dey under subsidy regiment

See the GSM thing. Before GSM, there was NITEL, which despite being subsidised was only for the rich.

GSM came, was so expensive intially that most people could not afford it. ...then the GSM companies made insane profit, and as a result, more investment came in and prices fell.

The thing is if subsides were removed in 1993, it would have made domestic refining profitable. And thus refineries would spring up well well.

It doesn't mean we get cheap fuel though....but it means things would be better.

The issue with subsides is that they cause reduction in profit due to the price controls inherent in them. People don't like price controls. SO, they would import, and prefer that government gives them free money.

You simply think Nigeria succumbs to reason and logical analysis like most other countries. You dont know anything about your country.

First tell the FG since you're one that the Nigerian people deserve the truth in the places you and your cohorts have lied.
Do you think you can do that.....?

That's not the reason. There's a technical explanation (cracking or fractional distillation) for it. Even the Waltersmith Modular Refinery doesn't output PMS at the moment.

Obviously as a result of Naira depreciation. If government did not restart the policy we would have been paying close to N1,000 per litre for petrol.

However, now that the Naira is gaining value we expect the story to change.
Seconded, if naira continue gaining value. We will soon start paying fully for petrol and more revenue for government

Bastards. Playing ping pong with the brainless masses according to their political interests and financial benefits. But the most annoying part is that some very 'useful' idiots posing as 'intellectuals' are ever ready to support them.

The federal government is not subsidizing any petrol. A barrel of crude oil in the international market is $85 as at today, that’s the equivalent of $0.51/liter. Convert $0.51 to the current exhange rate of $1100, you get naira 561. According to the international market a price of a liter of fuel is naira 561. It hurt me so much that people who have held sensitive position in Nigeria can’t calculate this easy mathematics. The federal has not subsidized petrol since tinubu was president. We need to do our own research before coming online to embarrass ourself
