I doubt the Russians will ever do that. The relationship between Russia and Israel is really complicated, Take Syria as a case study, the Russians could have supplied air defense to protect all of Syria but yet they decided against it, giving the Israelis free reign over Syria. I understand it could have been worse for Assad if not for the Russians and Iranians.

However, invading Iran was nearly impossible 2 decades ago, why would it be easy now? I believe the Iranian response was more of a message than revenge. It was just a show of force and they were within their rights to retaliate.
